Book excerpt: "This work discusses the development, the verification and the validation of high-order (of accuracy) solvers for the simulation of turbulent fluid flows. In a first part, a methodology for the verification of high-order solvers is proposed which examines the implementation, in a given computer software, of mathematical models that represent the flow dynamics. The method of manufactured solutions is adopted which allows for the exact evaluation of discretization errors and observed orders of accuracy. The latter are compared to the theoretical orders of accuracy for a variety of increasingly complex problems, starting from unbounded (by walls) inviscid flows and gradually reaching the case of realistic turbulent boundary layers, modelled by the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, along with the original and the negative Spalart-Allmaras closure models. Each case serves to illustrate and discuss salient aspects of the proposed methodology.Code verification via manufactured solutions is furthermore distinguished from solution verification and the latter is extended to high-order frameworks by describing the approach for error estimation via extrapolation of high-order solutions which is applied, as an example, to the case of turbulent flow over a flat plate. This exercise enabled the exploration into the question of high-order grid convergence for various output quantities of interest as well as the question of uncertainty analysis. This pointed at the inadequacy of substituting solution verification to proper high-order solver verification, even for a relatively simple problem and an expert set of grids. It is therefore recommended to use the solutions of actual problems for engineering and science applications, only along with estimated numerical uncertainties, especially for lower orders which are more error-prone. In the second part of this work, a compact high-order variational multiscale method for the large-eddy simulation of turbulence is devised and validated. The existing multiscale method is thus expanded from modal frameworks to a large family of compact high-order nodal schemes, represented by the recent flux reconstruction discretization method. The potential of the proposed formulation is then assessed on a Taylor-Green vortex problem and its results are validated against the filtered data from direct numerical simulations. It is thus revealed that proper de-aliasing is mandatory to conserve the quality of high-order large-eddy simulation. Furthermore, reducing the numerical dissipation of Roe's Riemann solver is found to contribute to improving low-Mach flow solutions for variational multiscale methods. Finally, the proposed variational-multiscale formulation resulted in noticeable improvements over the baseline implicit as well as the classical large-eddy simulations." --

Book excerpt: The primary objective of this work is to provide accurate numerical solutions for selected flow fields and to compare and evaluate the performance of selected turbulence models with experimental results. Four popular turbulence models have been tested and validated against experimental data often turbulent flows. The models are: (1) the two-equation k-epsilon model of Wilcox, (2) the two-equation k-epsilon model of Launder and Sharma, (3) the two-equation k-omega/k-epsilon SST model of Menter, and (4) the one-equation model of Spalart and Allmaras. The flows investigated are five free shear flows consisting of a mixing layer, a round jet, a plane jet, a plane wake, and a compressible mixing layer; and five boundary layer flows consisting of an incompressible flat plate, a Mach 5 adiabatic flat plate, a separated boundary layer, an axisymmetric shock-wave/boundary layer interaction, and an RAE 2822 transonic airfoil. The experimental data for these flows are well established and have been extensively used in model developments. The results are shown in the following four sections: Part A describes the equations of motion and boundary conditions; Part B describes the model equations, constants, parameters, boundary conditions, and numerical implementation; and Parts C and D describe the experimental data and the performance of the models in the free-shear flows and the boundary layer flows, respectively. Turbulence is still one of the key issues in tackling engineering flow problems. As powerful computers and accurate numerical methods are now available for solving the flow equations, and since engineering applications nearly always involve turbulence effects, the reliability of CFD analysis depends more and more on the performance of the turbulence models. Successful simulation of turbulence requires the understanding of the complex physical phenomena involved and suitable models for describing the turbulent momentum, heat and mass transfer. For the understanding of turbulence phenomena, experiments are indispensable, but they are equally important for providing data for the development and testing of turbulence models and hence for CFD software validation.

The discontinuities in the flow field (such as shock waves, contact surfaces and material interfaces) are captured by using a shock-capturing method coupled with a high-order high-resolution compact differencing scheme. Verification and validation is conducted by simulating 1-D and 2-D canonical test problems and comparing the numerical results with experimental data and previous numerical results. High resolution numerical simulation of the impulsive acceleration of a dense gas curtain in air by a Mach 1.21 planar shock (modeling the experiments by Balakumar et al. PoF 2008) is carried out by solving the 3-D compressible multi-species Navier-Stokes equation coupled with a localized artificial diffusivity method to capture discontinuities in the flow-field. The simulations account for the presence of three species in the flow-field: air, SF6 and acetone (used as a tracer species in the experiments). The reshock process is studied by re-impacting the evolving curtain with a reflected shock wave. Turbulence statistics computed in the flow-field following reshock are reported and compared with experiment where possible. Inertial range scaling, vorticity anisotropy and Reynolds stress development are studied in the reshocked flow. The high resolution data set is used to test certain modeling assumptions appearing in mixing models (BHR model) that have been traditionally used to study variable density flows. Finally preliminary results are shown from a 3-dimensional calculation of a planar shock interacting with a planar perturbed interface between air and SF6.

This includes most of the ?uid dynamics that one ?nds in everyday life from the ?ow of air in a room to most weather phenomena. Inundertakingthesimulationofincompressible?uid?ows,oneoftentakes many issues for granted. As these ?ows become more realistic, the problems encountered become more vexing from a computational point-of-view. These range from the benign to the profound. At once, one must contend with the basic character of incompressible ?ows where sound waves have been analytically removed from the ?ow. As a consequence vortical ?ows have been analytically “preconditioned,” but the ?ow has a certain non-physical character (sound waves of in?nite velocity). At low speeds the ?ow will be deterministic and ordered, i.e., laminar. Laminar ?ows are governed by a balance between the inertial and viscous forces in the ?ow that provides the stability. Flows are often characterized by a dimensionless number known as the Reynolds number, which is the ratio of inertial to viscous forces in a ?ow. Laminar ?ows correspond to smaller Reynolds numbers. Even though laminar ?ows are organized in an orderly manner, the ?ows may exhibit instabilities and bifurcation phenomena which may eventually lead to transition and turbulence. Numerical modelling of suchphenomenarequireshighaccuracyandmostimportantlytogaingreater insight into the relationship of the numerical methods with the ?ow physics.

Book excerpt: Turbulence modeling both addresses a fundamental problem in physics, 'the last great unsolved problem of classical physics,' and has far-reaching importance in the solution of difficult practical problems from aeronautical engineering to dynamic meteorology. However, the growth of supercom puter facilities has recently caused an apparent shift in the focus of tur bulence research from modeling to direct numerical simulation (DNS) and large eddy simulation (LES). This shift in emphasis comes at a time when claims are being made in the world around us that scientific analysis itself will shortly be transformed or replaced by a more powerful 'paradigm' based on massive computations and sophisticated visualization. Although this viewpoint has not lacked ar ticulate and influential advocates, these claims can at best only be judged premature. After all, as one computational researcher lamented, 'the com puter only does what I tell it to do, and not what I want it to do. ' In turbulence research, the initial speculation that computational meth ods would replace not only model-based computations but even experimen tal measurements, have not come close to fulfillment. It is becoming clear that computational methods and model development are equal partners in turbulence research: DNS and LES remain valuable tools for suggesting and validating models, while turbulence models continue to be the preferred tool for practical computations. We believed that a symposium which would reaffirm the practical and scientific importance of turbulence modeling was both necessary and timely.
