Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a historic battlefield site is discovered and studied, the focus is often on the “hardware”: remnants of weaponry, ammunition, supplies, and equipment that archaeologists carefully unearth, analyze, conserve, and frequently place on display in museums. But what about the “software”? What can archaeology teach us about the humans involved in the conflict: their social mores and cultural assumptions; their use and understanding of power? In The Archaeology of Engagement: Conflict and Revolution in the United States, Dana L. Pertermann and Holly K. Norton have assembled a collection of studies that includes sites of conflicts between groups of widely divergent cultures, such as Robert E. Lee's mid-1850s campaign along the Concho River and the battles of the River Raisin during the War of 1812. Notably, the second half of the book applies the editors’ principles of conflict event theory to the San Jacinto Battlefield in Texas, forming a case study of one of America's most storied—and heavily trafficked—battle sites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times has called the work of the Polshek Partnership a "triumph of substance over flash," and New Yorker Paul Goldberger has lauded the firm's ability to create meaningful works that demonstrate that "architecture can be an enriching force in life." This long-awaited monograph is published as the firm celebrates its fortieth anniversary. Guided by a respect for the environment, the innovative use of materials and technology, a progressive aesthetic vision, and its collaborative structure, the Polshek Partnership has produced a catalog of public worksnbsp;-- from theaters sand museums to libraries, hospitals, and schoolsnbsp;-- that collectively ennoble our civic life on a daily basis. In this handsomely produced volume, sixteen, of the partnership's most important works are examined in depth from initial conception through design, construction, and completion. These works include the celebrated Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History, the New York Times Printing Plant, and the Ed Sullivan Theater adaptation for David Letterman's Late Show. The book also documents seven of the firm's most recent projects, including the Clinton Presidential Library, Scandinavia House, and Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall.

Download or read book Parks for Texas written by James Wright Steely and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State parks across Texas offer a world of opportunities for recreation and education. Yet few park visitors or park managers know the remarkable story of how this magnificent state park system came into being during the depths of the Great Depression in the 1930s. Drawing on archival records and examining especially the political context of the New Deal, James Wright Steely here provides the first comprehensive history of the founding and building of the Texas state park system. Steely's history begins in the 1880s with the movement to establish parks around historical sites from the Texas Revolution. He follows the fits-and-starts progress of park development through the early 1920s, when Governor Pat Neff envisioned the kind of park system that ultimately came into being between 1933 and 1942. During the Depression an amazing cast of personalities from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Lyndon Johnson led, followed, or obstructed the drive to create this state park system. The New Deal federal-state partnerships for depression relief gave Texas the funding and personnel to build 52 recreational parks under the direction of the National Park Service. Steely focuses in detail on the activities of the Civilian Conservation Corps, whose members built parks from Caddo Lake in the east to the first park improvements in the Big Bend out west. An appendix lists and describes all the state parks in Texas through 1945, while Steely's epilogue brings the parks' story up to the present.
