Book excerpt: In 1930, when Rabindranath Tagore met Paul and Edith Geheeb in Germany, they formed a fruitful and long-term association resulting in the exchange of ideas and vision. Tagore's Brahmacharya Ashram, founded in 1901 in Shantiniketan, and the Geheeb's Odenwaldschule, established in Germany in 1910 (thereafter the Ecole d'Humanité in Switzerland, established in 1934 after the couple fled Nazi Germany), emerged from vastly different cultural backgrounds and social exigencies. Yet, they recognized striking similarities between their educational endeavours. The meeting also initiated a close association between India and Germany, with the Geheebs attracting many Indian intellectuals and Indophile Germans to their schools. This book explores the areas where the lives of the Geheebs and Tagore, and their respective circles, overlap. Rather than being a biography, a history, or a comprehensive description, this study is a comparison of Tagore and the Geheebs and their schools. Making use of the repository of unpublished correspondence available at the Ecole's archive, the author studies the Indo-German cultural exchanges in the early twentieth century that were initiated by these three educators and their pedagogical vision.

India is a pre-eminent destination for offshoring, underscoring the relevance of global production networks (Theme 1). Yet, the creation of jobs has not transformed employment patterns in the country but rather accentuated informalization and casualization (Theme 2). Indeed, even India’s ICT-related sectors, perceived as mascots of modernity and vehicles for upward mobility, raise questions about the extent of social upgrading (Theme 3). In an intra-organizational or inter-organizational setting, career development usually refers to controlling one's career. Individual goals and aspirations are inextricably tied to career advancement. Self-actualization and self-evaluation of one's interests and abilities are the first steps. The various options are then matched with the interests. The individual must train oneself in order to gain the necessary abilities for the option or career path he has selected. Finally, once he has acquired the needed competencies, he must perform in order to meet the goals and targets he has set for himself. Career development is inextricably tied to an individual's progress and happiness, and thus should be governed by the individual rather than by the employer. Career advancement allows a person to flourish both professionally and personally. Employees can also improve and influence their careers by learning new skills like as leadership, time management, good governance, communication management, and team management. 5 Steps to a Successful Career In a person's overall professional growth, there are several steps or stages: 1. Self-Evaluation The first step in career development is self-assessment, which entails determining what type of career and growth one desires, as well as what skills and interests one possesses. 2. Awareness of Career Opportunities This is the stage in which a person investigates several job options that are in line with the self-assessment completed in the first step. Career awareness refers to a person's ability to investigate numerous domains and sorts of jobs/work that are available. 3. Setting Objectives This is the most crucial step in career development because it is here that one outlines specific short and long term goals in order to achieve the desired profession. To begin, both short and long term objectives must be defined. Short-term team goals are more actionable, but long-term goals can be altered or changed as the company grows. 4. Skill Training Once a career and goals have been established, it is necessary to learn the necessary skills in order to progress. Self-training or enrolling in a structured online or offline training programme are also options for skill development. Once the necessary talents have been gained, the final stage can begin. 5. Exercising With all of the necessary information and skills, the most important aspect of the job is to effectively complete the tasks and jobs in order to advance along the career path. The five steps are part of a continuous procedure. Many times during a person's career, they will need to revisit the cycle in order to achieve the desired level of advancement.

Book excerpt: China is experiencing an unprecedented phenomenon: breakneck industrialization on a scale and at a pace not seen before. It is trying to achieve in just a few decades what Western nations took more than a century to do. The arrival in the country’s cities of tens of millions of rural dwellers, at most semi-skilled, has put huge strain on the country’s system of vocational education, known as TVET. How have the Chinese authorities and their education administrators responded? Is China’s TVET system adapting to the rapidly evolving needs of its industry? Using the province of Yunnan as a subject, this detailed case study is a closely argued and sanguine analysis of the operation of TVET in China. The authors deployed a set of internationally comparable criteria to offer a searching assessment of current performance, at the same time documenting areas of strength and weakness. The question the authors’ methodology answers is how well China’s TVET system is performing compared to technical and vocational education structures in other countries. In fact, they discover that in Yunnan, a province representative of the challenges faced nationwide, much has indeed been done, from a wholesale overhaul of programs to make them relevant to industry requirements, to major investment in infrastructure. Teacher training has been reformed, and take-up of professional master’s and doctoral courses has been encouraged. Joint initiatives with bodies such as UNESCO have improved training and vocational education at high school level. While there is a strong international history of such comparative evaluations, which are essential for policy makers to benchmark their administration, few studies have included China despite the enormous amount of value that can be learned from that country’s experience. This work will provide vital material for researchers, governments and development agencies alike.
