Book Challenging Glass 3

Download or read book Challenging Glass 3 written by Freek Bos and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 1022 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two things everybody knows about glass: it is transparent, and it breaks! These are also the properties that constitute the challenge of glass as an architectural and structural material. This book presents papers from the third Challenging Glass Conference (CGC3), held at the Technical University (TU) Delft, the Netherlands, in June 2012. The conference brings together glass engineering, research and design specialists. Papers are grouped under seven topic headings: project and case studies; joints, fixings and adhesives; strength, stability and safety (a category which includes a quarter of all the papers presented at the conference); laminates and composite design; curved and bended glass; architectural design and lighting and finally, glass in facades. Glass remains one of the most exciting materials available to designers and architects today. This book will be of interest to all those involved in working with glass in an architectural and structural context.

Book Advanced Structural Analysis

Download or read book Advanced Structural Analysis written by Devdas Menon and published by Alpha Science International, Limited. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Structural Analysis is a textbook that essentially covers matrix analysis of structures, presented in a fresh and insightful way. This book is an extension of the author s basic book on Structural Analysis. The initial three chapters review the basic concepts in structural analysis and matrix algebra, and show how the latter provides an excellent mathematical framework for the former. The next three chapters discuss in detail and demonstrate through many examples how matrix methods can be applied to linear static analysis of skeletal structures (plane and space trusses; beams and grids; plane and space frames) by the stiffness method. Also, it is shown how simple structures can be conveniently solved using a reduced stiffness formulation, involving far less computational effort. The flexibility method is also discussed. Finally, in the seventh chapter, analysis of elastic instability and second-order response is discussed in detail. The main objective is to enable the student to have a good grasp of all the fundamental issues in these advanced topics in Structural Analysis, besides enjoying the learning process, and developing analytical and intuitive skills. With these strong fundamentals, the student will be well prepared to explore and understand further topics like Finite Elements Analysis.

Book excerpt: This important collection reviews key research on adhesive behaviour and applications in sectors as diverse as construction and automotive engineering. The book is divided into three main parts: fundamentals, mechanical properties and applications. Part one focuses on the basic properties of adhesives, surface assessment and treatment. Part two concentrates on understanding how adhesives perform under stress and the factors affecting fatigue and failure. The final part of the book reviews industry specific applications in areas such as building and construction, transport and electrical engineering. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Adhesive bonding is a standard reference for all those concerned with the industrial application of adhesives. - Essential information for all those concerned with the industrial application of adhesives - This important collection examines adhesives and adhesive bonding for load-bearing applications - Arranged in a user-friendly format with three main sections: fundamentals, generic uses and industry specific applications

Book Structural Use of Glass

Download or read book Structural Use of Glass written by Matthias Haldimann and published by IABSE. This book was released on 2008 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to redress this issue by providing an overview of the recent developments in this field thereby providing a basis for the understanding of the structural performance and design of glass in buildings. Each chapter draws on the latest developments in practice and research and contains contributions from various international glass experts. The mix of general and specialist content ranging from rules of thumb to fracture mechanics and novel applications to post-breakage performance make this book useful to practitioners and researchers. Furthermore, the text is supplemented by tables of the major codes of practice and by an extensive list of references.

Book Glass Interactive Building Envelopes

Download or read book Glass Interactive Building Envelopes written by Michel Crisinel and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of tomorrow's towns and cities will be based on new social, economic and technological ideals focused on improving the quality of life. To attain this objective, architects and engineers of today must improve the quality of buildings and establish new principles of building conception. The quality of interior space and the impact of a building on its surroundings depends strongly on the physical interface that separates the outer environment from the inner building space. The conception and realisation of this interface (the envelope) are, therefore, of prime importance.

Book Glass in Architecture and Structural Engineering

Download or read book Glass in Architecture and Structural Engineering written by and published by . This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades glass technologies for buildings have undergone radical changes and extended the functions and applications of glazing in modern architecture. Consequently, several transparent buildings have been constructed, in which the materials have almost disappeared. As new constructions become increasingly energy efficient, their main environmental impact will no longer be considered in terms of their energy consumption. The impact of manufacturing the building materials as well as the construction and demolition phases becomes critical to improving a building's sustainability based on a complete life-cycle approach. In this respect, glass generates minimal environmental impact, which makes it a product of choice for sustainable buildings. Glass in Architecture and Structural Engineering brings together up-to-date information on the developments in structural glass research and their practical applications, offering a holistic approach to research, construction and engineering. Nowadays, a vast array of glass and glazing solutions exists to satisfy the needs of the most ambitious architects and building engineers who want to design and construct low energy or passive buildings. In well-designed buildings fitted with the right glazing solutions, glass offers both a positive balance of energy through the building envelope, and the provision of sufficient daylight to reduce artificial lighting needs. The book examines the present situation by investigating new possibilities and assessing their effect on the development of glass buildings. It presents insight into the durability, safety, appearance, and efficiency of transparent buildings can be improved through continuous refinement of designs, replacement of aged elements, prompt repair of damaged protective coatings, and greater exploitation of double-sided screens. This book covers contribution from renowned authors from all over the world report on current research results and innovative construction projects on all aspects of structural glass research including theoretical and experimental research on elements, assemblies, connections and material.
