Book Development of a Fifth Grade Nutrition Education Curriculum Following Los Angeles Unified School District s Fifth Grade Health Standards

Download or read book Development of a Fifth Grade Nutrition Education Curriculum Following Los Angeles Unified School District s Fifth Grade Health Standards written by Amy Ngoc-Tram Nguyen and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States (U.S.), nutrition education curriculums are written and implemented based on local school wellness policies (LWP), and thus, this field of education does not have the same level of standardization or requirements that other core subjects have, such as math or language arts. Given that nutrition education at the school level has the potential to encourage healthy food and beverage choices at an early age, standardized nutrition education in children should be considered as a vital prevention and treatment method for obesity. A review of the literature was conducted to determine the current state of nutrition education in the U.S. The literature demonstrated that while nutrition education is highly regarded and recommended by multiple associations as an essential component of school nutrition programs, its standardization remains local. Despite the lack of standardization, the literature also dictates what strategies and traits of nutrition education programs should have to be effective for teaching nutrition knowledge and eating behaviors. Some of these strategies include addressing teacher nutrition knowledge and comprehension, involvement of students' home life in the activities, and considerations for integration of nutrition standards into other core subjects. The purpose of this project was to develop a usable and adaptable nutrition education curriculum and corresponding lesson plans that can be used universally by teachers for fifth grade students. A nutrition education curriculum comprising seventeen thoroughly written lesson plans was produced using Los Angeles Unified School District's fifth grade health education standards designated by the district's LWP.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In North America obesity continues to be a problem, one that extends throughout life as children move into adolescence and adulthood and choose progressively less physical activity and less healthy diets. This public health issue needs to be addressed early in childhood, when kids are adopting the behaviors that they will carry through life. Eat Well & Keep Moving, Third Edition, will help children learn physically active and nutritionally healthy lifestyles that significantly reduce the risk of obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and other diseases. BENEFITS This award-winning evidence-based program has been implemented in all 50 states and in more than 20 countries. The program began as a joint research project between the Harvard School of Public Health (currently the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health) and Baltimore Public Schools. In extensive field tests among students and teachers using the program, children ate more fruits and vegetables, reduced their intake of saturated and total fat, watched less TV, and improved their knowledge of nutrition and physical activity. The program is also well liked by teachers and students. This new edition provides fourth- and fifth-grade teachers with the following: • Nutrition and activity guidelines updated according to the latest and best information available • 48 multidisciplinary lessons that supply students with the knowledge and skills they need when choosing healthy eating and activity behaviors • Lessons that address a range of learning outcomes and can be integrated across multiple subject areas, such as math, language arts, social studies, and visual arts • Two new core messages on water consumption and sleep and screen time along with two new related lessons • A new Kid’s Healthy Eating Plate, created by nutrition experts at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, that offers children simple guidance in making healthy choices and enhances the USDA’s MyPlate Eat Well & Keep Moving also offers a web resource that contains numerous reproducibles, many of which were included in the book or the CD-ROM in previous editions. A separate website, www.eatwellandkeepmoving.org, provides detailed information for food service managers interested in making healthful changes to their school menus; this information includes recipes, preparation tips, promotional materials, classroom tie-ins, and staff training. The web resource also details various approaches to getting parents and family members involved in Eat Well & Keep Moving. A Holistic Approach Eat Well & Keep Moving is popular because it teaches nutrition and physical activity while kids are moving. The program addresses both components of health simultaneously, reinforcing the link between the two. And it encompasses all aspects of a child’s learning environment: classroom, gymnasium, cafeteria, hallways, out-of-school programs, home, and community centers. Further, the material is easily incorporated in various classroom subjects or in health education curricula. Eight Core Principles Central to its message are the eight core Principles of Healthy Living. Those principles—at least one of which is emphasized in each lesson—have been updated to reflect key targets as defined by the CDC-funded Childhood Obesity Research Demonstration partnership. These are the principles: • Make the switch from sugary drinks to water. • Choose colorful fruits and vegetables instead of junk food. • Choose whole-grain foods and limit foods with added sugar. • Choose foods with healthy fat, limit foods high in saturated fat, and avoid foods with trans fat. • Eat a nutritious breakfast every morning. • Be physically active every day for at least an hour per day. • Limit TV and other recreational screen time to two hours or less per day. • Get enough sleep to give the brain and body the rest it needs. Flexible, Inexpensive, Easy to Adopt The entire curriculum of Eat Well & Keep Moving reflects the latest research and incorporates recommendations from the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans. It fits within school curricula, uses existing school resources, is inexpensive to implement, and is easy to adopt. The content is customizable to school and student population profiles and can help schools meet new criteria for federally mandated wellness policies. Most important, armed with the knowledge they can gain from this program, elementary students can move toward and maintain healthy behaviors throughout their lives.

Book Nutrition Education in the K 12 Curriculum

Download or read book Nutrition Education in the K 12 Curriculum written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-09-21 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The childhood obesity epidemic and related health consequences are urgent public health problems. Approximately one-third of America's young people are overweight or obese. Health problems once seen overwhelmingly in adults, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension, are increasingly appearing in youth. Though the health of Americans has improved in many broad areas for decades, increases in obesity could erode these and future improvements. The IOM report Accelerating Progress in Obesity Prevention: Solving the Weight of the Nation recognized the importance of the school environment in addressing the epidemic and recommended making schools a focal point for obesity prevention. The development and implementation of K-12 nutrition benchmarks, guides, or standards (for a discussion of these terms, see the next section of this chapter) would constitute a critical step in achieving this recommendation. National nutrition education curriculum standards could have a variety of benefits, including the following: Improving the consistency and effectiveness of nutrition education in schools; Preparing and training teachers and other education staff to help them provide effective nutrition education; Assisting colleges and universities in the development of courses in nutrition as part of teacher certification and in updating methods courses on how to integrate nutrition education in subject-matter areas in the classroom and in materials; and Establishing a framework for future collaborative efforts and partnerships to improve nutrition education. Nutrition Education in the K-12 Curriculum: The Role of National Standards is a summary of the workshop's presentations and discussions prepared from the workshop transcript and slides. This summary presents recommendations made by individual speakers.

Book Implementation of an Elementary School based Nutrition and Healthy Eating Curriculum

Download or read book Implementation of an Elementary School based Nutrition and Healthy Eating Curriculum written by Justin Robbins and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proper nutrition is a key component that can significantly improve children's overall health. Many elementary schools do not include adequate nutrition education in their curricula. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project implemented a nutritional curriculum for fifth graders to develop foundational knowledge and gain experience in choosing essential nutrition options to promote healthy eating behaviors and improve well-being. Fourteen nutrition lessons focusing on nutrition core standards from the Utah Education Network were delivered to 93 5th-grade elementary school students. Lessons taught the importance of consuming fruits and vegetables, avoiding sugar-sweetened beverages, avoiding nutrient-poor energy-dense foods, and applying practical healthy eating strategies. Project assessment included student attendance and participation in each lesson, pre-and post-test questionnaires, weekly interactive quizzes, and comments gathered from students and educators. Lessons had a 94% attendance rate, with an average post-lesson completion rate of 97%. Pre- and post-assessment quiz mean scores improved by 27%. 89% of students liked the nutrition lessons and 91% answered they would improve their food choices because of the lessons. Students’ comments on what they learned included statements about choosing healthier food options, MyPlate, and Utah agriculture. A nutritional curriculum specific to elementary-aged school children leads to increased knowledge and gained experience in choosing essential nutrition to promote well-being and the prevention of diseases. A DNP-FNP is crucial at promoting health and wellness and can serve as a resource for nutrition education that may improve community health outcomes.

Book Taking Stock of Programs to Develop Socioemotional Skills

Download or read book Taking Stock of Programs to Develop Socioemotional Skills written by Maria Laura Sánchez Puerta and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-08-17 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a systematic review of the documented impacts of programs aimed at fostering socio-emotional skills in developed and developing countries. It uses a life-cycle approach to organize the findings from rigorous evaluations of more than 80 programs. This includes programs for toddlers and young children before primary school, programs for students enrolled in formal education, and programs targeted at the out-of-school population. The book develops a conceptual framework that helps to identify the program characteristics and participants’ profiles associated with a range of program outcomes. These include health-related, behavioral, academic or cognitive, and economic-related outcomes. The review finds that few of the programs studied focus exclusively on the development of socio-emotional skills. In fact, most efforts to develop socio-emotional skills are embedded within innovative education and training curricula, as well as pedagogical and classroom practices. Evidence shows that programs are particularly effective when targeted to highly vulnerable populations and, in particular, to young children. Overall, findings indicate that high-quality programs for young children tend to foster cognitive abilities in the short run and to impact socio-emotional skills over the long run. Programs for students enrolled in formal education (primary and secondary levels) show positive and significant impacts on the outcomes reviewed. The most successful of these programs are implemented school-wide and follow the SAFE approach: that is, they are appropriately sequenced, active, focused, and explicit. Finally, the review finds that programs for out-of-school children and youth are usually designed as a means of achieving immediate labor market outcomes (e.g., job-placement, formal employment, and higher wages). While some of these programs show positive and statistically significant impacts on socio-emotional skills, the impacts tend to be small.

Ruby, Cody, T.J., Sydney, and others will help your students learn about health while strengthening their abilities in reading, writing, and other cross-curricular topics. WOW! functions as a group of kits--without the cost of a kit! Ancillaries other publishers might make you pay extra for are included with the teacher's guides for each level of the WOW! series at a very affordable price. Plus, few supplies are need for delivering the dynamic lessons found in WOW!, and the few little things you might need for activities or demonstrations are inexpensive and easily found in a school or discount store. That means that you can deliver WOW! content expertly, smoothly, and affordably with very little prep time! Coordinated School Health Connections Today's child needs an updated, multifaceted approach in order to achieve health literacy, or the ability to make choices that will enhance personal health and well-being now and in the future. For many years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have promoted the key to children's health and well-being through their Coordinated School Health Model. This model encompasses eight interactive areas: -Health education -Physical education -Health services -Nutrition services -Counseling, psychological, and social services -Healthy school environment -Health promotion for staff -Family and community involvement WOW! Delivers Coordinated School Health With concern rapidly growing about childhood obesity, inactivity, and other health risks such as type 2 diabetes, states and municipalities are now responding by passing laws requiring coordinated school health. The WOW! Health Education series meets these needs by providing the four components that are most frequently required: -Health education core content meeting the relevant national standards -Physical education helping students meet the national standards -Parent involvement newsletters provided per unit and per grade level, in both English and Spanish -Nutrition education and services for students and parents alike. Professional development opportunities are available through the authors to support each essential component. This Is How WOW! Works Each level of The World of Wellness Health Education series consists of the following: -a teacher's guide -a teacher's resource CD-ROM -a student book that corresponds to the students' levels For kindergarten students, the student book is a big book, a large colorful book for the teacher to read to the group; first- through fifth-grade students have their own books. In addition, an abridged first-grade student book is available in big book format. Color Coding Across the series, kindergarten through fifth grade, WOW! uses a color-coded system to denote grade levels. This allows you the additional flexibility of using a lower level to meet the needs of students with academic challenges or a higher level to challenge gifted students. In today's world of tight budgets and increasing demands on school resources, rest assured that the WOW! student books are not intended to be used as workbooks. Rather, they are meant to last multiple years while still being cost-effective. This complies with the directives of most school districts not to purchase student consumables.
