Book excerpt: Accurate estimates of foliar biomass (FB) are important for quantifying carbon storage in forest ecosystems, but FB is not always reported in regional or national inventories. Foliar biomass also drives key ecological processes in ecosystem models. Published algorithms for estimating FB in conifer species of the Pacific Northwest can yield signifi cantly different results, but have not been rigorously compared for species other than Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco). We compared five algorithms for estimating FB for seven common coniferous species in the Pacific Northwest. Algorithms based on diameter at breast height (DBH), or on DBH and height, consistently yield higher estimates of FB than algorithms based on sapwood area. At the tree level, differences between algorithms increased with increasing DBH for all species, but their order and magnitude differed by species. At the stand level, differences among algorithms were muted by the mix of species and diameter classes that contributed to total FB of stands of different seral stages and species composition. Significant differences among estimates of FB from different algorithms show the need for consistent methods for estimating FB for carbon accounting, tests of the sensitivity of ecosystem models to these differences, and more field observations to compare algorithms.

Book excerpt: Forest biomass is the second-largest renewable energy resource in Canada, representing a major pool in the global carbon budget, but better estimates of forest biomass are needed. In the 1980s, numerous empirical biomass equations were developed for estimating forest biomass. However, many of these were reported inconsistently by different authors in terms of their form and parameter values, even for the same species, which has complicated their application. This study was undertaken to review existing methods of biomass measurement and estimation, and to identify and evaluate the existing biomass equations that might be most suitable for estimating the biomass of major species at a large spatial scale in westcentral Canada. Seventeen commonly used biomass equations and two biomass extrapolation methods were compared at the individual tree and stand scales for major species in west-central Canada. The biomass equations usually provided more consistent estimates for medium-sized trees than for small or large trees. Equations developed for the Prairie provinces and/or for national data sets were more appropriate for estimating the individual tree biomass of six boreal forest species in west-central Canada. There were no significant differences between the mean tree method and the normal distribution approach for extrapolating from individual tree biomass to stand biomass. For shrub understory biomass, there were no significant differences among the species-specific equations. For estimating belowground biomass, equations based on the aboveground biomass are recommended; therefore, accurate estimation of aboveground biomass is a prerequisite for accurately determining belowground biomass.

The way in which plants steer their photosynthetic product across their compartments is not fixed but likely vary over time, across growth economies and among species and, lastly, is influenced by plant size and climate, Obtaining a qualitative/quantitative understanding of the influence that these factors have in both growth and biomass allocation is of fundamental importance either in understanding plant ecology and evolution and into developing environmental policies and useful forest management practices to cope with future climate change.

Book excerpt: An increase in the demand for wood results in improved recovery and less residual biomass in the forests. Paradoxically, interest in forest residue as a renewable source of raw material seems to be in a reverse ratio to its availability in a certain area. Finland and Sweden are probably more dependent on forestry and forest in dustries than any other developed countries in the world. A sufficiency of raw ma terial for integrated forest industries is vital for the national economy of both countries, and a great deal of attention is being paid to the long-term potential of unutilized biomass left behind in logging operations. Furthermore, since these countries possess no reserves of fossil fuels, and since their per-capita consump tion of primary energy is exceptionally high, they also consider unmerchantable forest biomass a realistic source of indigenous energy. A joint Nordic research project on harvesting and utilization of logging residue was carried out in 1969-1976 under the auspices of the Nordic Research Council on Forest Operations. This fruitful cooperation soon gave rise to related national projects in Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark, stimulating further research and producing practical applications. Concurrently, particularly after the worldwide energy crisis in 1973, research on all aspects of utilization of forest bio mass mushroomed in the United States, Canada, and the Soviet Union. An ex plosive increase occurred in both the number and diversity of biomass studies.
