Book Promoting the digitalization of small and medium sized agrifood enterprises in Asia and the Pacific

Download or read book Promoting the digitalization of small and medium sized agrifood enterprises in Asia and the Pacific written by Gálvez Nogales, E. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) constitute the large majority of businesses both globally and in Asia and the Pacific. Despite their undeniable importance, the literature on SMEs in general, and agrifood SMEs in particular, is relatively limited. One specific area that deserves deeper consideration is the extent of digital engagement of agrifood SMEs along the agrifood value chain, from farm to retail and food services, in countries in Asia and the Pacific. The goal of this publication is to understand the current status of digitalization of agri-SMEs in Asia and the Pacific, what this process looks like and how to improve it. A value-chain approach was adopted to evaluate the digital maturity of all types of agri-SMEs across previously siloed categories – from farm to fork, and in the core and the extended value chain. The report analyses the benefits of digital transformation for agri-SMEs and the challenges they face in this process. Next, the report outlines practical and actionable measures that governments and other stakeholders may undertake to help agrifood SMEs stay ahead in the digital age. Special attention is given to the creation of a digital environment that enables agri-SMEs to increase the efficiency of their operations and allow them to grow. This is particularly important given that many agri-SMEs are located in rural agricultural areas, (where more than half of the population in Asia and the Pacific still resides), but where the environment is less favourable to digital transformation.

Book Overcoming challenges to digital agribusiness start ups

Download or read book Overcoming challenges to digital agribusiness start ups written by Kropff, Wietske and published by CTA. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent CTA workshop on ‘catalysing actionable knowledge to enhance next-generation ACP agribusiness through digitalisation’ identified five intersecting drivers that explain what farmer-oriented agribusinesses expect to achieve by investing in digitalisation: reduced risk, raised productivity, increased efficiency, improved decisions, and enhanced market access. Participants argued that digital interventions all serve one or more of these, depending on specific local needs and situations. A critical factor underpinning what works in all these areas is the economic sustainability of the business models used to deliver value and services.

This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information and communication technologies (ICTs) offer unprecedented opportunities to transform agriculture in Africa. ICT innovations are opening up exciting opportunities for young entrepreneurs to engage at various stages of the agricultural value chain, from developing solutions that make the agri-food sector more productive to setting up services that facilitate market access for smallholder producers. The stories told here show that ICTs are enabling farmers to access information about everything from the weather to market prices, from agricultural best practice to controlling pests and diseases. Mobile platforms are also helping farmers to gain access to credit and therefore the means to improve their productivity and incomes. Book Driving Factors for Venture Creation and Success in Agricultural Entrepreneurship

Download or read book Driving Factors for Venture Creation and Success in Agricultural Entrepreneurship written by Arafat, Mohd Yasir and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-10-22 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on entrepreneurship research has generally ignored the agricultural sector. Few entrepreneurship scholars who are mostly agricultural economists and rural sociologists have contributed in parallel with an isolated body of work without much integration and a larger research agenda. Most of the work in agriculture entrepreneurship focuses on the traditional operations of the sector but lacks the theoretical framework required for a broader conceptual understanding of entrepreneurship in the agriculture sector. There is not much alliance between these two parallel research streams. Theoretical and methodological differences have constrained the interdisciplinary collaboration. Driving Factors for Venture Creation and Success in Agricultural Entrepreneurship assesses the main themes of agripreneurship, discusses important contextual aspects of the agriculture sector to enhance the understanding of entrepreneurship, and highlights how the key contextual dimensions of the agricultural sector can elucidate some of the less understood aspects of entrepreneurship theory and practice. Covering topics such as agribusiness and farm entrepreneurship, it is ideal for entrepreneurs, agriculturalists, professionals, researchers, students, academicians, and policymakers working in the field of entrepreneurship in various disciplines: management, education, agriculture education, sociology, economics, psychology, and technology.

Book The Transformation of Agri food Systems

Download or read book The Transformation of Agri food Systems written by Ellen B. McCullough and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2008 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The driving forces of income growth, demographic shifts, globalisation and technical change have led to a reorganisation of food systems from farm to plate. The characteristics of supply chains - particularly the role of supermarkets - linking farmers have changed, from consumption and retail to wholesale, processing, procurement and production. This has had a dramatic effect on smallholder farmers, particularly in developing countries. This book presents a comprehensive framework for assessing the impacts of changing agri-food systems on smallholder farmers, recognising the importance of heterogeneity between developing countries as well as within them. The book includes a number of case studies from Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe, which are used to illustrate differences in food systems' characteristics and trends. The country case studies explore impacts on the small farm sector across different countries, local contexts and farm types

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An increasing number of African smallholders are moving from subsistence farming to selling at least part of their output. To shift successfully to a more commercial footing they need a lot more than the production advice traditionally provided by extension services. They need to understand how markets work. They also need advice on postharvest handling, help with business planning and marketing, assistance with organization, information on prices, links to buyers and credit, help with contracts and standards, and many other types of assistance. These agricultural business development services are provided by a mix of private companies, NGOs, cooperatives and government agencies - in what is called a 'pluralistic extension system'"--Page 4 of cover.

Book Development and the Next Generation

Download or read book Development and the Next Generation written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The theme of The World Development Report 2007 is youth - young people between the ages of 12 to 24. As this population group seeks identity and independence, they make decisions that affect not only their own well-being, but that of others, and they do this in a rapidly changing demographic and socio-economic environment. Supporting young people's transition to adulthood poses important opportunities and risky challenges for development policy. Are education systems preparing young people to cope with the demands of changing economies? What kind of support do they get as they enter the labor market? Can they move freely to where the jobs are? What can be done to help them avoid serious consequences of risky behavior, such as death from HIV-AIDS and drug abuse? Can their creative energy be directed productively to support development thinking? The report will focus on crucial capabilities and transitions in a young person's life: learning for life and work, staying healthy, working, forming families, and exercising citizenship. For each, there are opportunities and risks; for all, policies and institutions matter."
