The assay is based on a transmission-corrected passive assay technique. We have demonstrated that the system can cover a concentration range of 0.5--300 g/l with simultaneous isotopic determination. The system can be used to assay input and eluate streams of the recovery operation. The system can be modified to measure low-concentration effluent solutions from the recovery operation covering 0.01--40 g/l. The same system has also been modified to assay plutonium solutions enriched in 242Pu. 6 refs.

Book excerpt: The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory develops sophisticated gamma-ray analysis codes for isotopic determinations of nuclear materials based on the principles of the MultiGroup Analysis (MGA). MGA methodology has been upgraded and expanded and is now comprised of a suite of codes known as MGA++. A graphical user interface has also been developed for viewing the data and the fitting procedure. The code suite provides plutonium and uranium isotopic analysis for data collected with high-purity germanium planar and/or coaxial detector systems. The most recent addition to the MGA++ code suite, MGAHI, analyzes Pu data using higher-energy gamma rays (200 keV and higher) and is particularly useful for Pu samples that are enclosed in thick-walled containers. Additionally, the code suite can perform isotopic analysis of uranium spectra collected with cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) detectors. We are currently developing new codes with will integrate into the MGA++ suite. These will include Pu isotopic analysis capabilities for data collected with CZT detectors, and U isotopic analysis with high-purity germanium detectors, which utilizes only higher energy gamma rays. Future development of MGA++ will include a capability for isotopic analyses on mixtures of Pu and U.

This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gamma-ray spectroscopy is used to assay plutonium solutions flowing through thin sample cells. The direct measurement of gamma-ray intensities are used to determine the plutonium isotopic content and total concentration. The development of spectral analysis algorithms, the use of appropriate instrument internal standards, techniques to minimize spectral acquisition times, and methods to deduce the 242Pu content are discussed. Results of experiments on plutonium solutions in the 200 to 500 grams/liter concentration range of typical light water reactor isotopic content are given. These solutions typify the purified plutonium product streams in a reprocessing plant. The isotopic and total plutonium assay results as determined by this technique are within 0.5% of the reference values, as determined by mass spectrometry and controlled potential coulometry, respectively. Similar techniquescan also be applied to low concentration plutonium solutions. Plutonium isotopic ratios can be determined by this technique and the alpha specific activities computed. For low concentration (10−° to 10−4 grams/liter) streams, cerium activated Vycor scintillation detectors can then be used for plutonium monitoring. This is compared with other proposed methods of on-line plutonium analyses. Modes of operation of these monitors for real-time inventory and diversion detection are discussed.

A detailed evaluation of this instrument has been performed. The results show that the instrument can routinely determine 239Pu concentrations of 1 to 500 g/l with accuracies of 1 to 5% and assay times of 1 to 2 x 103 s.

In 1999, it was modified to include a physical-based model for the energy dependent efficiency. It uses the gamma rays in the energy range from approximately 30 keV to 210 keV, except the 100-keV region. This energy region provides intense, well-separated gamma rays from the principal isotopes of plutonium. For applications involving small quantities (mg to g) of freshly separated plutonium in various chemical forms, it is ideally suited for accurate real-time or near real-time isotopic analysis. Since the last modification, LEGS has been incorporated into the FRAM code (Fixed-energy Response-function Analysis with Multiple efficiency), version 4. FRAM v4 is capable of analyzing the peaks in the whole energy range from 30 keV to 1 MeV, including the X-ray region. The new capability of analyzing the peaks in the 100-keV region greatly enhances the plutonium analysis in the 30 keV to 2 10 keV ranges of the traditional LEGS. We now can analyze both the freshly separated and aged plutonium with greater accuracy.

This breakthrough was achieved by developing a unique but highly accurate method for delineating the overall ''intrinsic'' efficiency curve, including the plutonium K-shell absorption discontinuity at 121 keV. Consequently, the measured 129- and 148-keV peak intensities can now be used to reliably determine the relative abundances of 239Pu and 241Pu. The intense 94- to 104-keV region is also analyzed, providing accurate data for the other isotopes of interest. 5 refs., 3 figs., 2 tabs.

This MC program emphasizes the standardization of data collection procedures along with the implementation of internal and external measurement control checks to provide the requisite measurement quality assurance. This report also describes the implementation of the MC program in the isotopic analysis code GRPAUT. Recommendations are given concerning the importance and frequency of the various MC checks in order to ensure a successful implementation of the MC procedures for the user's application.
