Book Development of a Plastic Rotating Band for High Performance Projectiles

Download or read book Development of a Plastic Rotating Band for High Performance Projectiles written by W. S. Larson and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This includes the investigation of plastic rotating bands fabricated directly to steel projectiles by laminating, casting, fluid bed coating, injection and compression molding. The successful method was to injection mold nylon 12 over a clean and primed projectile seat and then to heat the primed interface to a melt temperature by induction heating the projectile.

Book excerpt: This project included the study of processing parameters, material variations, and geometry factors for producing highly reliable nylon 12 plastic rotating bands bonded to M56A4 20mm projectiles. Included were the development of material and process specifications. Production tooling and equipment were developed, and a large volume of plastic banded projectiles was fabricated under simulated high volume conditions. The efficacy of each developed parameter was verified by gun fire testing.

Book Preliminary Evaluation 20MM Plastic Rotating Bands

Download or read book Preliminary Evaluation 20MM Plastic Rotating Bands written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental exploratory evaluations of plastic bands applied to ammunition for the M139 gun consisted of obtaining and evaluating data provided by comparison firings between projectiles having either plastic or copper bands in two ballistic environments, the M139 and M61 gun barrels (Mann) over the temperature range -65 deg F, +70 deg F, and +160 deg F. In all, 120 projectiles were fired, 60 in each environment and 10 of each band material at each conditioning temperature. In addition, photographic observation of representative in-flight projectile firings provided visible evidence of band integrity, projectile stability, and band deformation.

Book Experimental Determination of Residual Molded in Stress Level in Plastic Rotating Bands

Download or read book Experimental Determination of Residual Molded in Stress Level in Plastic Rotating Bands written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polyethersulfone (PES) has been investigated for use as an injection molded rotating band material on 20 mm projectiles. Molded bands have been observed to develop crazing when exposed to solvent laden atmospheres. The presence of residual stresses resulting from thermal contraction during cool- down and melt stresses in the polymer on filling the cavity exacerbate this stress cracking problem. The purpose of this investigation was to experimentally establish the magnitude of this residual molded-in stress level. Tensile specimens of PES were subjected to solvent induced stress-rupture tests in a laboratory test set-up. A relationship between both the time-to-craze and the time-to-failure and the applied stress was developed over the stress range of 500 to 5000 psi. Three different solvents were used to encompass this wide stress range within reasonable testing times. After this relationship between tensile stress and time-to-craze was established, actual projectiles were immersed in the solvents and the time-to-craze recorded. Correlation of the projectile test results with the tensile test results indicated that the residual molded-in stress in the rotating bands was 1750 + or - 800 psi (12.06 + or - 5.51 MPa).

Book Stress Analysis of Plastic Rotating Bands

Download or read book Stress Analysis of Plastic Rotating Bands written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic stress analyses of plastic rotating bands, used on projectiles to impart spin, have been obtained by means of a two-dimensional finite-difference computer code. The first phase of the interaction within the barrel, involving the axisymmetric convergence of the plastic band into the forcing cone, has been investigated in this study. Numerical solutions for three rotating band problems were obtained. The results of these solutions showed that (1) shearing forces acting along the band/barrel interface due to friction can have a major effect on rotating band performance, and (2) that with a current band design, the sharply-beveled rear section of the band becomes grossly distorted and develops a large annular lip protruding from the rear of the band (i.e., feathering). The third case considered a design modification made to alleviate the extrusion problem. These initial analyses show that finite-difference code solutions of the dynamics of rotating bands are practical and can provide a useful tool to investigate a number of key factors bearing on plastic band performance, such as material properties, stress-strain conditions experienced, and band geometries.

Book Modeling of Barrel Projectile Interaction in a Rotating Band

Download or read book Modeling of Barrel Projectile Interaction in a Rotating Band written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ABAQUS program was used and a refined finite element mesh was chosen to complete the modeling of the barrel/projectile interaction in a rotating band. The calculations for the engraving processes proceeded until the projectile had passed completely through the forcing cone in the land and groove. The axially symmetric cases were considered and the elasticity of the tube and projectile was neglected. Sliding friction was considered and the copper band was either elastic-plastic or ideally plastic. The magnitude and distribution of the contact pressure between the band and the tube were obtained during and after engraving. For the first time we have observed the opening of a gap between the band and the bore after engraving was completed, even when we observed full contact in the forcing cone.
