Book Community Participation in Development Projects

Download or read book Community Participation in Development Projects written by Samuel Paul and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the World Bank's experience with community participation (CP) in a sample of its projects selected from three different sectors; urban housing, population, health and nutrition (PHN), and irrigation. The sample was chosen on a judgmental basis and consisted of forty projects which were known to have the potential for the use of CP or incorporated it in their strategies, and ten successful projects from the same sectors which did not make use of CP. The focus of the paper is on the approaches to participation employed by the first set of projects and the lessons to be learned from their experience. An analysis of the second set of projects sheds light on the reasons why community participation was neglected by them.

Book Education and Development in Colonial and Postcolonial Africa

Download or read book Education and Development in Colonial and Postcolonial Africa written by Damiano Matasci and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access edited volume offers an analysis of the entangled histories of education and development in twentieth-century Africa. It deals with the plurality of actors that competed and collaborated to formulate educational and developmental paradigms and projects: debating their utility and purpose, pondering their necessity and risk, and evaluating their intended and unintended consequences in colonial and postcolonial moments. Since the late nineteenth century, the “educability” of the native was the subject of several debates and experiments: numerous voices, arguments, and agendas emerged, involving multiple institutions and experts, governmental and non-governmental, religious and laic, operating from the corridors of international organizations to the towns and rural villages of Africa. This plurality of expressions of political, social, cultural, and economic imagination of education and development is at the core of this collective work.

Download or read book Planetary Overload written by Anthony J. McMichael and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-10-07 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human species faces many threats to its health - perhaps to its survival. Taking an interesting perspective, Planetary Overload forcefully points out the consequences to human health of ongoing degradation of Earth's ecosystems. In a broad-based, accessible analysis, A. J. McMichael examines ecological disruptions - land degradation, ozone depletion, temperature increases, and loss of genetic diversity through the extinction of species, among others - and compellingly demonstrates their potentially disastrous results, including food shortages, new and intensified disease patterns, rising seas, mass refugee problems, and cancers, blindness, and immune suppression from increased ultraviolet radiation. While other books on the subject analyse only the environmental impact of these problems, McMichael relates each of these insidious processes back to its ultimate impact on human health. He thoroughly considers these problems within a broad evolutionary, biological, social, and economic context, and also explores the underlying problems contributing to environmental breakdown, especially the relations between the world's rich and poor. This book will be of interest to environmentalists, public health professionals, policy makers, environmental studies and human ecology scholars, and anyone wishing a lucid, rational assessment of today's pressing ecological concerns.

Book The Information Technology Revolution and Economic Development

Download or read book The Information Technology Revolution and Economic Development written by Nagy Hanna and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1991 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information is a major development resource, joining the ranks with human, natural and financial resources. Therefore, development agencies must understand the role of information and information technologies (informatics) in the developing countries to respond to a rapidly evolving global environment. The ongoing information explosion in the industrialized economies contrasts sharply with the information poverty of developing countries. This poverty takes many forms, including poor information support for macroeconomic and sectoral policy formulation and implementation, limited access to information for rural populations, and isolation of researchers and professionals from international research findings and so on. Informatics applications offers new ways to make the most of the managerial and institutional resources of developing countries, with the most widespread benefits likely to come from applying it to priority sectors. Governments are recognizing their roles as information providers and users, facilitators of information technology diffusion, and providers of information and communication infrastructures, as well as their role in setting policies for informatics. During the 1990s the impact of information technology will be felt increasingly. Developing countries at all levels of development must stay abreast of the information revolution : they cannot afford to ignore this "second industrial revolution."

Book Costs and Benefits of Rent Control

Download or read book Costs and Benefits of Rent Control written by Stephen Malpezzi and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1990 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past forty years, rent control has been a feature of housing in Ghana. This study focuses on the housing market in Kumasi, the second largest city in Ghana. The authors examine the characteristics of rent control in force there, and assess the costs and benefits of rent control, on landlords and tenants alike. These controls have been successful in ensuring that housing is very inexpensive for most households, in both absolute terms and in proportion of income devoted to rent. Because of these controls, landlords have been deprived of economic returns from their property. Therefore, they have tended to withdraw stock from renting to use for their own family members and to reduce maintenance. Rent control is not the only constraint on the housing market in Kumasi or in Ghana. This study also describes other supply side and regulatory constraints, including those affecting land, finance, and choice of building design and materials. A number of options for relaxation (decontrol) are studied with the aid of a simple present value model. Along with decontrol of new construction it is recommended that floating up and out of controls over a period of about 5 years, should be considered, along with policy changes to ensure ready supplies of land, finance, and building materials. Finally, building a political consensus behind decontrol is not independent of but is more important than the technical means chosen for decontrol or relaxation.

Book Promoting Rural Cooperatives in Developing Countries

Download or read book Promoting Rural Cooperatives in Developing Countries written by Avishay Braverman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1991 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic crisis in sub - Saharan Africa presents a major challenge to donors and to policy-makers. After an initial period of growth following independence, most African economies faltered, then failed. Repressed producer prices, inefficient public marketing boards, and weak government commitment have often been blamed for the poor performance of agriculture, Africa's most important sector. Thus, since the mid-1980s, many structural adjustment programs have emphasized price and marketing reforms, and countries have liberalized the marketing and pricing of major food crops. These reforms have improved the performance of the agricultural sector, but the effects on growth and real income have not met expectations. Deficient infrastructure, inadequate access to inputs and credit, poor extension services, and inefficient marketing systems constrain the effective expansion of production. There must be reforms that specifically address these constraints. This paper examines the reasons behind successful and unsuccessful experiences with rural co-ops and reevaluates the potential for remedying the major problems. It briefly explains the motivation for and effectiveness of rural co-ops in developed countries through the example of the Dutch. It then focuses on the development of rural cooperatives in sub - Saharan Africa and on the main issues and problems, including internal and external constraints.
