Book In service Evaluation of a Detection control System for High speed Signalized Intersections

This book was released on 2005 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traffic engineers are often faced with operational and safety challenges at rural, high-speed signalized intersections. Vehicle-actuated control, combined with multiple advance detectors, is often used to improve operations and safety. However, this type of detection and control has not always resulted in a significant number of crashes. Crashes sometimes continue to occur at high-speed intersections, and delays to traffic movements can be unnecessarily long. An innovative detection-control system was developed for the Texas Department of Transportation to minimize both delay and crash frequency at rural intersections. This system was subsequently implemented at several intersections in Texas and its safety and operational benefits were evaluated. This report documents the findings and conclusions reached as a result of a three-year implementation project. The Detection-Control System was installed at each of eight intersections in Texas during the three-year period. Five of the intersections were suitable for a before-after study of safety and operational data. An evaluation of the before-after data indicated that the Detection-Control System was able to reduce delay by 14 percent, stop frequency by 9 percent, red-light violations by 58 percent, heavy-vehicle red-light violations by 80 percent, and severe crash frequency by 39 percent.

Book Development of a Second Generation Detection control System for Safer Operation of High Speed Signalized Intersections

Download or read book Development of a Second Generation Detection control System for Safer Operation of High Speed Signalized Intersections written by Karl H. Zimmerman and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis project improved and evaluated a detection-control system (D-CS) for enhanced traffic safety at high speed signalized intersections. A literature review was conducted to identify potential enhancements to the D-CS control algorithm required to create the "second generation" D-CS algorithm. The needed enhancements included dilemma zone protection based on vehicle size, real-time dilemma zone changes, coordination, and real-time measures of effectiveness reporting. After selecting the most feasible enhancements, the control algorithm was modified and tested in the laboratory. Based on laboratory test results and refinements, a "second generation" D-CS control algorithm was developed capable of providing dilemma zone protection specific to vehicle type using a modified system to prevent max out during "Stage 2" operation.

Book Evaluation of Video Detection Systems and Development of Application Guidelines at Signalized Intersections

Download or read book Evaluation of Video Detection Systems and Development of Application Guidelines at Signalized Intersections written by PeiFeng Fu and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the results of a study on evaluating three major video imaging vehicle detection systems (VIVDS) currently deployed in Nevada's urban areas. The report first provides a brief review of the features and functions of some major VIVDSs. The evaluation was based on videos collected at selected intersections in both Northern Nevada and Southern Nevada. The dataset included a total of 10 intersections consisting of 30 intersection approaches and about 48 hours of video for each approach. These videos were directly recorded with detection overlays from the VIVDSs at the sites. The detection accuracy was later verified manually by watching video playbacks in the lab. The performance of the VIVDS was assessed based on the accuracy level, taking into account the total missed and false detections. Missed and false detections were the two major sources of error considered in this study. Specific detection errors and possible causes were discussed for each site. Recommendations were provided for potentially reducing video detection errors. A set of guidelines were also provided for improving VIVDS' performance at existing intersections or future deployments.

Book Intersection Decision Support Surveillance System

Download or read book Intersection Decision Support Surveillance System written by Lee Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In rural Minnesota, approximately one-third of all crashes occur at intersections. Analysis of crash statistics and reports of crashes at rural expressway through-stop intersections shows that, for drivers who stop before entering the intersection, the majority of crashes involve an error in selecting a safe gap in traffic. The Intersection Decision Support system, developed at the University of Minnesota, is intended to reduce the number of driver errors by providing better information about oncoming traffic to drivers stopped at intersections. This report deals primarily with the surveillance technology which serves as the foundation upon which the IDS system will be built. Three components of the surveillance system are described in detail in the body of the report: 1) a Mainline Sensor subsystem; 2) a Minor Road Sensor subsystem; 3) a Median Sensor subsystem. These subsystems include radar units, laser-scanning sensors, and infrared cameras, integrated with a vehicle tracking and classification unit that estimates the states of all vehicles approaching the intersection. The design, installation, performance, and reliability of each of these three subsystems are documented in the report. The report concludes with an analysis of driver gap acceptance behavior at an instrumented intersection. Gap selection is examined as a function of time of day, traffic levels, weather conditions, maneuver, and other parameters. Log-normal distributions describe gaps acceptance behavior at rural, unsignalized expressway intersections.
