Book Development and Analysis of Models of a Supercharger

Download or read book Development and Analysis of Models of a Supercharger written by Curtis C. Carroll and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When attempting to model complicated systems, there are two strategies that can be used. One is to create a model that accounts for as many phenomena in the system as possible in order to yield precise results. The other is to identify the key phenomena that affect the overall output, and then develop a simplified model based on those phenomena. While the first method can give desirable outputs, development is resource intensive. The second strategy, though not capable of the accuracy of the first, is much more cost effective and can give quantitative answers that are just as valuable as detailed outputs. In regards to an automotive supercharger, the first method has already been employed to create a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of airflow through the system. The data generated from this model was analyzed and compared with measured data taken at identical conditions to determine if the CFD model was modeling the supercharger correctly, both in terms of airflow and sound generation. Also, a flow model for one portion of the supercharger cycle was developed using the key phenomena model approach. Results from this model were tested for accuracy against measured data. In addition, design applications for the second model were investigated, and a test of the effects of basic design changes conducted.

Book Developing Tools to Understand and Predict Noise Phenomena in a Supercharger

Download or read book Developing Tools to Understand and Predict Noise Phenomena in a Supercharger written by Nathanael A. Meyer and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In design and development, products are often tested for improvement. Often measurements are taken but correlating these measurements to the physical phenomena present in the system can be a difficult task. Accurately attributing the measured data to the physical systems present in a system is imperative to design and development. In the case of an automotive supercharger, the design goal was a quieter and more efficient supercharger. Pressure measurements were taken at various points in the supercharger. First the data was placed in an animation of the supercharger, to get a "big picture" view of the system. Then, frequency analysis was performed on the measured pressure data and the frequency components were linked to the measured pressure. An equation for the airflow through the backflow slots in the supercharger was developed as a function of pressure, time, and initial temperature. Finally, predictive models where developed the flowrate through the backflow slots as a function of the supercharger's rotational rate (rpm) and the angle of the rotors within the supercharger.

Book Two stage Supercharging

Download or read book Two stage Supercharging written by Richard S. Buck and published by . This book was released on 1941 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The arrangement of the parts and the installation and control problems of two-stage mechanically driven superchargers for aircraft engines are discussed. Unless an entirely new form of supercharger is developed, there will be a definite need for a two-stage centrifugal supercharger. It is shown that the two-stage mechanically driven supercharger itself is a comparatively simple device; the complications arise from the addition of intercoolers and controls.

Book Turbochargers and Turbocharging

Download or read book Turbochargers and Turbocharging written by Evangelos G. Giakoumis and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supercharging has long been established as the most successful means to maximise power output from a specific engine size. Through supercharging, the inlet air density is increased, usually by means of a compressor, and by doing so the amount of air trapped in the cylinders is increased accordingly. As a result, efficient burning of a proportionately higher amount of fuel is enabled. By far, the most successful version of supercharging is turbocharging. Here, the expansion in a turbine of the exhaust gases leaving the cylinders supplies the power needed to drive the compressor. At the moment, practically all diesel engines are turbocharged, with a continuously increasing penetration in the highly competitive market of SI-powered vehicles. The current book on turbochargers and turbocharging, comprising fifteen chapters, gathers important and novel research on many modern aspects of turbocharging for all kinds of gasoline and diesel-powered engine applications (automotive, truck, marine and aircraft). For example, characterisation of the value proposition of turbocharged vehicles, marine engines turbo-compounding, fundamental issues of turbocharger lag and its relation with engine-out PM emissions, variable geometric compressors, automotive two-stage turbocharging, and dynamic operation of turbochargers including VGT and surging effects are amongst the topics analysed. Review papers form a very important part of the book, namely the discussion and in-depth analysis of various automotive boosting systems, turbocharger reduced-order modeling, heat transfer and pulsating flows in turbomachinery, mathematical models for turbocharged engines, and turbomachine-based engine throttling. A considerable portion of the book (seven chapters) deals with control-oriented modeling techniques relating to the turbocharger and/or the whole engine power-plant. Such models have proven valuable during the design of both turbochargers and turbocharged engines, and are described and discussed in detail for a variety of automotive and aircraft applications. The book is written for post-graduate students, engineers and researchers in the field of internal combustion engines (diesel and SI) and turbochargers.

Book One Dimensional Model and Pulse Generation of a Supercharger

Download or read book One Dimensional Model and Pulse Generation of a Supercharger written by Martin Hardis and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reduced order model that captures the key aspects of a roots type supercharger has been developed. The goal of this reduced order model is to obtain the greatest computation speed for an acceptable accuracy. Key phenomena that dominate the response in the supercharger were identified first, and then implemented in the reduced order model. The reduced order model was developed based on one dimensional supercharger model from Sorenson. This model was then improved by adding backflow slot features (previously done by Carroll), a carryback slot, and finally a pressure pulse generated by the carryback slot. The output of this model, supercharger performance (volumetric and J1723 isentropic efficiency), was then compared with measured data from Eaton Corporation. The results agree after a supercharger wall temperature is increased with respect to the pressure ratio and rotor speed. This suggests that there is another heat generation source in the supercharger that has not been accounted for in the model, such as mechanical loss due to friction. A further investigation on the supercharger wall temperature needs to be conducted to verify this hypothesis. If the investigation results do not support this hypothesis, other source of heat generation in the supercharger should be investigated.
