Employees need to understand what is at stake and to participate in decisions. However, if managers and leaders need to mobilize collective intelligence to succeed, they have little or no training in working in large groups. Collaborative design is a development process involving stakeholders. Workshops, led by facilitators from within the company or from external firms, take place during seminars lasting one or more days. In a complex situation such as a merger, the reframing of a project, a business choice, the launch of a product, the development of an organization, or the implementation of a strategy, they bring together from fifteen to more than one hundred and fifty participants around an objective: to analyze the situation, to find out how to deal with and solve a problem, to produce shared representations or decisions, and to commit to action. This book is based on the author's proven practices. It will help executives and managers co-design and co-facilitate these workshops so that they produce tangible results. Very concrete, it is illustrated with various cases such as a large aeronautical company, a research laboratory, an industrial SME, a professional group, a cooperative, or a school. After an introduction on collaborative design, it is organized into four parts: 1. Understanding, imagining, and giving meaning 2. Planning, projecting, and giving substance 3. Expanding, improvising, and giving rhythm 4. Planting, growing, and sustaining life Each of the twenty-seven practical sections can be approached independently thanks to a common plan: issues, keys, and examples. The book is prefaced by Gabrielle Rolland, consultant in change management, speaker and writer on leadership and collective intelligence, and author of "Seniors, votre avenir a un futur" (Laffont, 2009).

Communities of Practice have been identified as important sites of learning through creating and sharing knowledge within its social structures. The thesis examines how learning develops in this context and constitutes the basic theoretical attainment that is aligned to CoP. Furthermore, the paper reviews how technology can be introduced to reinforce communication and collaboration within the community. In order to build an understanding of how CoP create organizational value, the thesis not only focuses on the acknowledged learning theory models but also on the characteristics and benefits of those communities themselves as well as on virtual communities in general. Significant learning opportunities are identified within those communities, which are affirmed through a well-founded literature review on the topics “Learning Organizations”, “Web-based Learning” and “Development of a framework for Human Resource Development”. The review includes the identification of the HR-professional as a key player and stakeholder within the context of establishing a digitised CoP. Book excerpt: Originally presented at the Sixth Adult Development Symposium, the papers in this volume examine possible relationships between the fields of organizational and (adult) developmental psychology with particular emphasis given to the grand developmental theories of Lawrence Kohlberg, Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, Heinz Werner, and their descendants. On the most general level, the papers on development in the workplace are organized on the basis of the authors' chosen units of analysis -- the individual, the dyad and group, and the organizational culture. The editors conclude by uncovering similarities and differences among the contributors' theoretical approaches to development in the workplace and their own. From a recent extension of Werner's organismic-developmental theory, they focus their suggestions for future research on such issues as: * unit of analysis * the holistic and systemic nature of human behavior and experience * broader conceptualizations of the person, of the environment, and of development * the need for methodological eclecticism * the complimentarity of basic and applied research. Through this lens, they shed light on underlying reasons why the majority of authors have focused on the individual worker as a unit of analysis and then propose that future researchers more broadly define the basic concept of development in the workplace.
