Download or read book Campaign Guide written by U. S. Department Security and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, approximately 1,100 Americans 65 and older die in home fires and another 3,000 are injured. These statistics, combined with the fact that adults ages 50 or more care for and will soon enter this high-risk group, inspired USFA to develop a new public education campaign targeting people ages 50-plus, their families and caregivers. People between 65 and 74 are nearly twice as likely to die in a home fire as the rest of the population. People between 75 and 84 are nearly four times as likely to die in a fire. People ages 85 and older are more than five times as likely to die in a fire. A Fire Safety Campaign for People 50-Plus encourages people ages 50 and older - including the high risk 65-plus group - to practice fire-safe behaviors to reduce fire deaths and injuries. The strategy is to inform and motivate adults as they enter their fifties so that stronger fire safety and prevention practices are integrated into their lives prior to entering the higher fire-risk decades. In addition, many Baby Boomers are currently caring for family members ages 65-plus and can encourage fire safe habits.

Book Senior Citizens Risk Reduction Program

Download or read book Senior Citizens Risk Reduction Program written by Kent M. Tomblin and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Applied Research Project was written after the author realized today's senior citizen population is going to increase from 13% to over 20% by the year 2030, and that Peoria Fire Department was not prepared to meet the population increase and its service needs. The problem statement of the study was Peoria Fire Department does not have a risk prevention program addressing the projected growth of the senior citizen population and their specific needs. The purpose of the study was to create a multi-faceted risk prevention program for the senior citizens in Peoria, Illinois. To create the senior citizens risk program and determine their needs, the following research questions were asked: 1. What risks are specific to senior citizens? 2. How can the Peoria Fire Department address these risks with a prevention program? 3. What additional training is necessary for the Peoria Fire Department personnel to implement a prevention program for senior citizens? The method of research was evaluative using periodicals and non-periodicals from the National Fire Academy Learning Resource Center. Searches on the internet lead to other fire departments which have senior safety prgorams. Local research identified community agencies which work with seniors. The results of the research was senior citizens are the fastest growing population segment and are the highest risk group for burns and fire fatalities. It also proved that few fire departments have senior citizen safety programs. Fire departments have been extremely successful with safety programs for children and now must commit to the same for their senior citizens. Safety programs need to be created to meet the future needs of seniors. The acceptance that prevention is an imperative division of the fire department is important and safety programs should be budgeted appropriately. [STAR#: 139589]

Book Implementation Guide

Download or read book Implementation Guide written by National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (U.S.). Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year in the United States, about three of every four fire-related deaths and injuries occur because of home fires. Seniors are at particularly high risk for injury and death from residential fires. In fact, people over 65 years of age are three times more likely to die in a residential fire as people younger than 65. Having physical or mental impairments, using chemical substances such as medicines and alcohol, and living with smokers or in substandard housing are some of the risk factors that make older adults more vulnerable to fire injury and death. Although most fires and associated injuries could be prevented, a large number of households lack working smoke alarms, which could alert them in case of fire. Other households may not be aware of fire safety actions they can take that could potentially save their lives. Effective residential fire safety interventions, including smoke alarm installation and fire prevention education, have been proven to reduce the risk of injury and death, particularly among high-risk households. Therefore, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) have created the Fire Safe Seniors Program to help organizations like yours to plan and implement fire safety interventions for the high-risk group of older adults.
