Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A History of Baroque Music is a detailed treatment of the music of the Baroque era, with particular focus on the seventeenth century. The author's approach is a history of musical style with an emphasis on musical scores. The book is divided initially by time period into early and later Baroque (1600-1700 and 1700-1750 respectively), and secondarily by country and composer. An introductory chapter discusses stylistic continuity with the late Renaissance and examines the etymology of the term "Baroque." The concluding chapter on the composer Telemann addresses the stylistic shift that led to the end of the Baroque and the transition into the Classical period."--Jacket.

Book excerpt: Mater dolorum (1726) by Georg Reutter the Younger (1708–72) is a German-language oratorio for instruments, soloists, and chorus, intended for performance on Good Friday “at the Holy Sepulcher”—that is, before a before a model of the Holy Sepulcher exhibited in a church for Holy Week observances. One of this influential Viennese musician’s earliest known works, Mater dolorum was performed at the Augustinian convent of St. Agnes zur Himmelpforte in Vienna on Good Friday (19 April) 1726, when Reutter was only eighteen years old. It was repeated at least twice, in 1729 and in 1731 or 1732, and is known to have been performed elsewhere as well. Its libretto, written by playwright Heinrich Rademin (1674–1731), was during its time one of the best-known texts for oratorios to be performed “at the Holy Sepulcher” and is notable for its strong emotional characterizations. The present edition is based on a set of parts preserved at Kremsmünster Abbey in Upper Austria, which also include cuts and alterations marked in later by Georg von Pasterwiz (1730–1803), regens chori at the abbey, giving evidence of a shorter version of the oratorio performed during his tenure there.

Book excerpt: "This collection of twenty-eight essays pays tribute to the memory of J. Bunker Clark (1931-2003), noted author, teacher, and performer. A specialist in American music, history of keyboard music, and the Baroque organ, Professor Clark for thirty-eight years--virtually his entire career--was professor of musicology, and later emeritus professor, at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. During the last twenty-one years of his life he was also the book series editor at Harmonie Park Press. The contributors are friends, former students, and colleagues. The volume is divided into seven subject areas that represent vital interests of the honoree: American Music, Keyboard Music, Early Music, Mozart and Beethoven, Music Education, Opera and Musical Theater, and Aesthetics and Historiography. A portrait of Bunker Clark as scholar, mentor, and editor, by William A. Everett, and personal reminiscences by Bruno Nettl, F. E. Kirby, and Marilyn Clark precede the essays."--Publisher's website.

Download or read book Mystical Love in the German Baroque written by Isabella van Elferen and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mystical Love in the German Baroque: Theology, Poetry, Music identifies the cultural and devotional conventions underlying expressions of mystical love in poetry and music of the German baroque. It sheds new light on the seemingly erotic overtones in settings of the Song of Songs and dialogues between Christ and the faithful soul in late 17th- and early 18th-century cantatas by Heinrich Sch tz, Dieterich Buxtehude, and Johann Sebastian Bach. While these compositions have been interpreted solely as a secularizing tendency within devotional music of the baroque period, Isabella van Elferen demonstrates that they need to be viewed instead as intensifications of the sacred. Based on a wide selection of previously unedited or translated 17th- and 18th-century sources, van Elferen describes the history and development of baroque poetic and musical love discourses, from Sch tz's early works through Buxtehude's cantatas and Bach's cantatas and Passions. This long and multilayered discursive history of these compositions considers the love poetry of Petrarch, European reception of petrarchan imagery and traditions, its effect on the madrigal in Germany, and the role of Catholic medieval mystics in baroque Lutheranism. Van Elferen shows that Bach's compositional technique, based on the emotional characteristics of text and music rather than on the depiction of single words, allows the musical expression of mystical love to correspond closely to contemporary literary and theological conceptions of this affect.
