Book Turbulent Premixed Flames

Download or read book Turbulent Premixed Flames written by Nedunchezhian Swaminathan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-25 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A work on turbulent premixed combustion is important because of increased concern about the environmental impact of combustion and the search for new combustion concepts and technologies. An improved understanding of lean fuel turbulent premixed flames must play a central role in the fundamental science of these new concepts. Lean premixed flames have the potential to offer ultra-low emission levels, but they are notoriously susceptible to combustion oscillations. Thus, sophisticated control measures are inevitably required. The editors' intent is to set out the modeling aspects in the field of turbulent premixed combustion. Good progress has been made on this topic, and this cohesive volume contains contributions from international experts on various subtopics of the lean premixed flame problem.

Book Modeling and Analysis of Chemiluminescence Sensing for Syngas Methane and Jet A Combustion

Download or read book Modeling and Analysis of Chemiluminescence Sensing for Syngas Methane and Jet A Combustion written by Venkata Narasimham Nori and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flame chemiluminescence has received increasing attention for its potential sensor and diagnostic applications in combustors. A number of studies have used flame chemiluminescence to monitor flame status, and combustor performance. While most of these studies have been empirical in nature, chemiluminescence modeling has the potential to provide a better understanding of the chemiluminescence processes and their dependence on various combustion operating conditions. The primary objective of this research was to identify and validate the important chemiluminescence reaction mechanisms for OH*, CH* and CO2*. To this end, measurements were performed at various operating conditions, primarily in laminar, premixed flames, fueled with methane, syngas (H2/CO) and Jet-A. The results are compared to 1-d laminar flame simulations employing the chemiluminescence mechanisms. The secondary objective was to use the experiments and validated chemiluminescence reaction mechanisms to evaluate the usefulness of flame chemiluminescence as a combustion diagnostic, particularly for heat release rate and equivalence ratio.

Book An Experimental Examination of the Relationship Between Chemiluminescent Light Emissions and Heat release Rate Under Non Adiabatic Conditions

Download or read book An Experimental Examination of the Relationship Between Chemiluminescent Light Emissions and Heat release Rate Under Non Adiabatic Conditions written by L. C. Haber and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion instability research has matured over the last decade and with it the need for more detailed diagnostics has increased. One main gap in the diagnostics is the ability to obtain a reliable quantitative measure of unsteady heat-release rate. In an effort to move in this direction using chemiluminescence as the measured quantity, this paper examines the formation of chemiluminescence light in premixed flames under non-adiabatic conditions. The main chemiluminescence emitters considered in the study are OH and CH. Experimental results for two types of burners are reported, a laminar Bunsen burner with co-flow and a ceramic honeycomb flat flame burner. The study shows that although the chemiluminescence observed in the two burners behaves very differently with respect to changes in experimental variables, the variation can be fully understood. OH chemiluminescence is found to be a good indicator of heat-release in both burners, whereas CH chemiluminescence is shown to be insensitive to some changes in heat- release rate. Based on the experimental results, the notion that chemiluminescence yield behaves linearly with flow rate cannot be universally supported. The non-linear variation observed is shown to correspond to an equally non- linear variation of heat-release with flow-rate. The results of the study thus have important ramifications for the interpretation of chemiluminescence measurements in dynamic combustion environments.

  • Author : Norbert Peters
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press

Download or read book Turbulent Combustion written by Norbert Peters and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-08-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combustion of fossil fuels remains a key technology for the foreseeable future. It is therefore important that we understand the mechanisms of combustion and, in particular, the role of turbulence within this process. Combustion always takes place within a turbulent flow field for two reasons: turbulence increases the mixing process and enhances combustion, but at the same time combustion releases heat which generates flow instability through buoyancy, thus enhancing the transition to turbulence. The four chapters of this book present a thorough introduction to the field of turbulent combustion. After an overview of modeling approaches, the three remaining chapters consider the three distinct cases of premixed, non-premixed, and partially premixed combustion, respectively. This book will be of value to researchers and students of engineering and applied mathematics by demonstrating the current theories of turbulent combustion within a unified presentation of the field.

Book Application of Rayleigh Scattering to Turbulent Flow with Heat Transfer and Combustion

Download or read book Application of Rayleigh Scattering to Turbulent Flow with Heat Transfer and Combustion written by L. Talbot and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive investigation has been carried out of the structure and statistical properties of unconfined turbulent flames, both V-shaped and conical. Measurement techniques included conditioned velocity measurements using two component LDV, flow visualization techniques, and Rayleigh scattering. Additionally, a new time resolved technique, LARS(Linear Array for Rayleigh Scattering) was developed which makes possible the determination of the instantaneous location of the flame sheet within the turbulent flame brush. A major objective of these flame studies was to access the appropriateness of models such as the Bray-Moss-Libby (BLM) model for describing the structure of planar turbulent combustion zones. The results of these investigation have revealed that many of the predictions of the BML model accord reasonably well with experimental observations, although some of the constants chosen in the theory are not verified experimentally. Agreement is better for the V-shaped planar flame than for the conical flame, particularly in the vicinity of the flame tip. Studies of the flame stabilization region in the wake of flameholders showed evidence of vortex shedding in the wake and of diminished fluctuation intensity with increased heat release. It was also observed that reaction in the shear layer bounding the recirculating products does not occur until a finite distance downstream of the flameholder. This observation is confirmed by CH fluorescence imaging of the flame region.
