Book Determination of the Stability and Control Characteristics of a Tailless All wing Airplane Model with Sweepback in the Langley Free flight Tunnel

Download or read book Determination of the Stability and Control Characteristics of a Tailless All wing Airplane Model with Sweepback in the Langley Free flight Tunnel written by John P. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1945 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: An investigation to determine the power-off stability and control characteristics of a tailless all-wing airplane model with sweepback has been made in the Langley free-flight tunnel. The results of the free-flight tunnel tests were correlated with results from force tests made at high Reynolds numbers in order to estimate the flying characteristics of the full-scale airplane. The investigation consisted of force and flight tests of a 4.3-foot-span dynamic model. The effects of flap deflection, center-of-gravity location, and addition of vertical-tail area were determined. The following conclusions were drawn from the results of the investigation: The full-sale airplane will undergo a serious reduction in stick-fixed longitudinal stability at high life coefficients unless early wing-tip stalling is eliminated. The directional stability of an all-wing airplane without vertical tail surfaces will be undesirably low. The effective dihedral of an airplane of this type should be kept low. An elevon and rudder control system similar to that used on this design should provide sufficient control.

Book Numerical Stability and Control Analysis Towards Falling Leaf Prediction Capabilities of Splitflow for Two Generic High Performance Aircraft Models

Download or read book Numerical Stability and Control Analysis Towards Falling Leaf Prediction Capabilities of Splitflow for Two Generic High Performance Aircraft Models written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-29 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerodynamic analysis are performed using the Lockheed-Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems (LMTAS) Splitflow computational fluid dynamics code to investigate the computational prediction capabilities for vortex-dominated flow fields of two different tailless aircraft models at large angles of attack and sideslip. These computations are performed with the goal of providing useful stability and control data to designers of high performance aircraft. Appropriate metrics for accuracy, time, and ease of use are determined in consultations with both the LMTAS Advanced Design and Stability and Control groups. Results are obtained and compared to wind-tunnel data for all six components of forces and moments. Moment data is combined to form a "falling leaf" stability analysis. Finally, a handful of viscous simulations were also performed to further investigate nonlinearities and possible viscous effects in the differences between the accumulated inviscid computational and experimental data. Seacord and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: An investigation to determine the stability and control characteristics of a straight-wing, tailless fighter model with a pusher propeller designed by the NACA has been made in the Langley free-flight tunnel. The investigation consisted principally of force and flight tests of a powered dynamic model. The effects of tail configuration, center-of-gravity location, and power on the stability and control characteristics of the model were determined. Tests were also made in the Langley 15-foot free-spinning tunnel to determine whether the model would trim at very high angles of attack.

Book Determination of the Stability and Control Characteristics of Airplanes from Tests of Powered Models

Download or read book Determination of the Stability and Control Characteristics of Airplanes from Tests of Powered Models written by Isidore G. Recant and published by . This book was released on 1942 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique of testing wind-tunnel powered models has been developed as a result of experience gained in the investigation of the static longitudinal and lateral stability and control characteristics of several powered models in the NACA 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel. As an important part of this technique, a minimum program of the tests considered necessary to specify satisfactorily the static stability and control characteristics for present-day airplanes has been tentatively established.

Book Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis Success Stories of X Plane Design to Flight Test

Download or read book Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis Success Stories of X Plane Design to Flight Test written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examples of the design and flight test of three true X-planes are described, particularly X-plane design techniques that relied heavily on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analysis. Three examples are presented: the X-36 Tailless Fighter Agility Research Aircraft, the X-45A Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle, and the X-48B Blended Wing Body Demonstrator Aircraft. An overview is presented of the uses of CFD analysis, comparison and contrast with wind tunnel testing, and information derived from CFD analysis that directly related to successful flight test. Lessons learned on the proper and improper application of CFD analysis are presented. Highlights of the flight-test results of the three example X-planes are presented. This report discusses developing an aircraft shape from early concept and three-dimensional modeling through CFD analysis, wind tunnel testing, further refined CFD analysis, and, finally, flight. An overview of the areas in which CFD analysis does and does not perform well during this process is presented. How wind tunnel testing complements, calibrates, and verifies CFD analysis is discussed. Lessons learned revealing circumstances under which CFD analysis results can be misleading are given. Strengths and weaknesses of the various flow solvers, including panel methods, Euler, and Navier-Stokes techniques, are discussed. Cosentino, Gary B. Book Uncertainty Quantification in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Aircraft Engines

Download or read book Uncertainty Quantification in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Aircraft Engines written by Francesco Montomoli and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces novel design techniques developed to increase the safety of aircraft engines. The authors demonstrate how the application of uncertainty methods can overcome problems in the accurate prediction of engine lift, caused by manufacturing error. This in turn ameliorates the difficulty of achieving required safety margins imposed by limits in current design and manufacturing methods. This text shows that even state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are not able to predict the same performance measured in experiments; CFD methods assume idealised geometries but ideal geometries do not exist, cannot be manufactured and their performance differs from real-world ones. By applying geometrical variations of a few microns, the agreement with experiments improves dramatically, but unfortunately the manufacturing errors in engines or in experiments are unknown. In order to overcome this limitation, uncertainty quantification considers the probability density functions of manufacturing errors. It is then possible to predict the overall variation of the jet engine performance using stochastic techniques. Uncertainty Quantification in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Aircraft Engines demonstrates that some geometries are not affected by manufacturing errors, meaning that it is possible to design safer engines. Instead of trying to improve the manufacturing accuracy, uncertainty quantification when applied to CFD is able to indicate an improved design direction. This book will be of interest to gas turbine manufacturers and designers as well as CFD practitioners, specialists and researchers. Graduate and final year undergraduate students may also find it of use.
