Book The Search for Returns in Africa

Download or read book The Search for Returns in Africa written by Martin Mailänder and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following paper looks at the question of what factors do significantly influence the amount of venture capital investment in Nigeria. It could be observed that the country's historical, political and economic environment play an important role in this regard, especially the century-old tension among ethnical groups as well as the latest presidential change with yet an uncertain impact on Nigeria's future development. Besides these high-level factors, more specific determinants at a lower level have been examined through a regression analysis for the period 1988 up to 2014. Thereby, the factors "GDP growth" and "stock market opportunities" as measured by market capitalization of listed companies (% GDP) have a significant and positive influence on the supply of venture capital, while the variable "real interest rate" exhibits a significant and negative influence on the dependent variable. Looking at the demand for venture capital investments, the variables "GDP growth" and "real interest rate" both show a significant and positive effect. Overall, GDP growth and the real interest rate provide not only significant results but also high explanatory power in the regression model. These factors were largely in line with the answers from the interviews conducted. Additionally, the variables "awareness about venture capital" and "infrastructure" which were not included in the model due to difficulty of measurement, were identified in the interviews as influencing factors for venture capital investments in Nigeria.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report represents one of the first attempts to econometrically identify the factors influencing the number of current investees in venture capital firms' portfolios across Africa. It applied Ordinary Least Squares to an Analysis of Covariance model to achieve this objective using two paradigms, i.e. the 'country of management' criterion, which capters the characteristics of where the venture capital firm is based and the 'country of destination' criterion, which captures the characteristics of where they invest"--P. iv.

Book Venture Capital Investment Criteria

Download or read book Venture Capital Investment Criteria written by Jane Mwebi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-19 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Venture capital is one of the most suitable sources of capital for business growth and expansion but most small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in emerging economies fail to meet the criteria required to access this source of capital. This is because venture capitalists evaluate SMEs in emerging economies using conventional investment criteria that do not take into consideration the institutional limitations of developing countries in general, and SMEs in particular. Thus, venture capitalists find SMEs to be ill-prepared for investment and view them as risky and costly. This book analyses the conventional venture capital investment criteria and highlights their limitations in a developing country context, identifies SME equity success factors, and develops hypotheses, which are empirically tested among venture capital investors and SMEs in South Africa. It provides an alternative set of venture capital investment criteria and a deeper understanding of SME equity financing. This book has important policy implications for private equity and venture capital investors, financial institutions, entrepreneurs, and anyone with a policy or research interest in advancing entreneurship.

Book Investment and Risk in Africa

Download or read book Investment and Risk in Africa written by Paul Collier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together academics in the fields of economics, political science, and law, with business practitioners in the fields of risk assessment and portfolio management. Their contributions are sequenced to tell a story. Africa is perceived as being a highly risky continent. As a result, investment is discouraged. These risks are partly exaggerated. However, to the extent that they reflect genuine problems, they are capable of being mitigated by insurance and reduced by political restraints such as central banks, investment charters, and international agreements.

Book Growth Equity And Self reliance

Download or read book Growth Equity And Self reliance written by Ampah G. Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores what is, for many African countries, a new and controversial policy of relying on private actors rather than on government organizations to foster economic growth and development. The contributors explore key issues such as the impact of private enterprise on the development process, small- and medium-sized businesses as a vehicle for growth, and strategies for the expansion of markets and trade. The contributors analyze the historical, social, cultural, and economic obstacles to the development of private enterprise in Africa; the roles of government, women, and business organizations; access to capital and the function of financial institutions; private initiative and agriculture; the use of skilled and semi-skilled labor; and technology transfer. Arguing that private sector forces are crucial to African socioeconomic development, the contributors recommend economic policy reform, establishment of more private enterprises, and encouragement of new domestic and foreign investment.

Download or read book The Institutional Determinants of Private Equity Involvement in Business Groups The Case of Africa written by Bruce Allen Hearn and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the governance attributes of post-IPO (initial public offering) retained ownership of private equity in business group constituent firms in contrast to their unaffiliated counterparts, in 202 newly listed firms in 22 emerging African economies. We adopt an actor centered institutional-theoretic perspective in rationalizing institutional voids and the advantages of maintained governance by both business angels (BA) and venture capital (VC) private equity. Our findings reveal private equity retain higher post-IPO ownership in business group constituents compared to unaffiliated firms and that this is inversely moderated in the context of improving institutional quality. Our result adds to the literature on multifocal corporate governance mechanisms.

It presents a new unified treatment of investment decision making and mark-to-market valuation. The discussions of risk-return and cost-of-capital calculations have been updated with the latest information. The most current industry data is included to demonstrate large changes in venture capital investments since 1999. The coverage of the real-options methodology has also been streamlined and includes new connections to venture capital valuation. In addition, venture capitalists will find revised information on the reality-check valuation model to allow for greater flexibility in growth assumptions.

Book Financing Africa s Cities

Download or read book Financing Africa s Cities written by Thierry Paulais and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2012-07-05 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the issues of financing urban growth of the African continent -- which has the highest urban growth rate on the planet -- in the next decades. Considerable investment will be needed to sustain this level of growth and to clear up accumulated backlogs. At the same time, decentralization has resulted in increased responsibilities for local government; but in most cases, institutional reforms were carried out without the transfer of a sufficient level of resources, and local capacities in governance and project management are weak. Which mechanisms will finance these extensive needs, and how will African local governments meet these needs? Specifics on how to finance African cities have not been studied. The actual scale of this market has not been fully grasped. A systemic approach to this market is difficult because of its diversity (country size; institutional context; characteristics of urban network; availability of capital market, currency, etc.) and a lack of data. Donors’ assistance methods in the sector are disparate, marked by disputes between different schools of thought; special-purpose vehicles created by donors operate according to a variety of methods and with wide-ranging and sparsely disseminated results. What is the best way to transform these systems, often antiquated in many respects, into modern financing systems that facilitate access to domestic markets, mobilize local savings and reinforce local government autonomy? There is no single answer to this question in regard to such a variety of institutional and economic contexts. The main objective of the study is to clarify the debates and to enlighten the choices of African decision-makers at local and national level.
