Book Light Curve Modeling of Eclipsing Binary Stars

Download or read book Light Curve Modeling of Eclipsing Binary Stars written by E.F. Milone and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the two decades since the development of the first eclipsing-binary modeling code, new analytic techniques and the availability of powerful, sometimes dedicated computing facilities have made possible vastly improved determinations of fundamental and even transient stellar parameters. The scale of these developments, of course, raises questions about modeling tools, techniques, and philosophies, such as: Who will maintain and upgrade the codes? Will the codes be open to improvement by outsiders, and if so, how? And, indeed, what should be the goals of a modeling program? Such questions had not been aired for a long time and, for this reason alone, deserved to be discussed in as general a forum as the community provides. This volume contains material presented by Commission 42 (Close Binary Stars) during the International Astronomical Union's XXI General Assembly in Argentina, July 1991, and during IAU Colloquium 151, Cordoba, Argentina, August 1991. The techniques discussed include simulations of stellar bright and dark spots, streams, partial and complete stellar disks, prominences, and other features characterizing active stars; modeling of polarization parameters; models that use radial velocities as well as line profile simulations to model velocity field variation across stellar disks; the weighted effects of brightness asymmetries; and models for translucent eclipsing agents such as stellar winds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1970s symposia or colloquia devoted to recent research on close binaries have been held around the world almost annually. At meetings of the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union this topic has also been discussed in detail at presentations in various commission meetings and also as invited talks by leading astronomers in the field. In recent years, fundamental changes have taken place in the study of close binaries due to the improvements in observational techniques, extension of observations from X-ray to radio regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, and advances in theoretical studies. For more than a decade, a group of astronomers at Ege University Observatory has been concentrating on active close binaries with particular emphasis on the behaviour of the light curves of chromospherically active systems. Thus, we decided to organize an international meeting in Western Anatolia, where this part of Turkey had been the cradle for great developments in science during antiquity. KUljadasi, located only minutes away from Ephesus, one of the seven wonders of the world, was selected to be the meeting site. Close binary systems constitute a very rich source of information about the physical properties of the component stars. Some systems are eclipsing variables, where periodic recurrences of eclipses are observed as comparatively brief decreases in the total brightness of the binary system. Precise methods of photometric observations make it possible to obtain the light variations of these systems because of eclipses and other phenomena.

Book Observation and Solution of the Light Curve for a W Ursae Majoris Eclipsing Binary Star System

Download or read book Observation and Solution of the Light Curve for a W Ursae Majoris Eclipsing Binary Star System written by Bruce E. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project has approached the study of eclipsing binary star systems from both the observational and the theoretical stand points. Observations of eclipsing binary stars U Pegasi and AZ Virginis of the W Ursae Majoris contact binary type have been made. The method for solving an eclipsing binary system's light curve for the system's elements (the radii, luminosity and limb darkening coefficients of the component stars and the inclination of the orbital plane) - originally developed by Thomas B. Horak - has been programmed for an electronic computer. Details and proceedings are described. After some modification, Horak's method for solving the light curve is shown to be at least as accurate as the classical methods and yet vastly superior to previous approaches in the speed and ease with which a solution may be obtained. A solution for the recently observed binary system VW Bootis is also obtained which appears superior to the only previous solution. (Author).

Book Eclipsing Binary Stars

Download or read book Eclipsing Binary Stars written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the formulation of mathematical models for the light curves of eclipsing binary stars, and on the algorithms for generating such models. Since information gained from binary systems provides much of what we know of the masses, luminosities, and radii of stars, such models are acquiring increasing importance in studies of stellar structure and evolution. As in other areas of science, the computer revolution has given many astronomers tools that previously only specialists could use; anyone with access to a set of data can now expect to be able to model it. This book will provide astronomers, both amateur and professional, with a guide for - specifying an astrophysical model for a set of observations - selecting an algorithm to determine the parameters of the model - estimating the errors of the parameters It is written for readers with knowledge of basic calculus and linear algebra; appendices cover mathematical details on such matters as optimization, coordinate systems, and specific models. While emphasizing the physical and mathematical framework, the discussion remains close to the problems if actual implementation. It begins with an overview of the problem and a discussion of the observational data that form the basis of any model. The treatment then turns to the direct problem (computing the light curve and other observables from the a given set of parameters) and then to the indirect problem (determining a best-fit set of parameters from the data). The book concludes with chapters on specific models and approaches and the authors' views on the structure of future light- curve programs.

Book Variable Stars as Essential Astrophysical Tools

Download or read book Variable Stars as Essential Astrophysical Tools written by Cafer Ibanogammalu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulsating and eccentric binary stars play a fundamentally important role in deciphering the mass distribution within stars. The present volume reviews the fundamental concepts of both radial and nonradial oscillations in the stars, including the Sun. Helio- and astroseismological results are reviewed, from the basics to the most recent developments. A new theory is presented, which seems to explain the mechanism of the light and radial velocity variations of recently discovered Ap stars. This textbook covers almost all kinds of variable stars of widely different characteristics. It will serve as a reference text for a very long time to come, not only for specialists but also for undergraduate students of physics and astronomy.

Book Eclipsing Binary Stars

Download or read book Eclipsing Binary Stars written by Panagiotis G. Niarchos and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of studying Eclipsing Binary Stars for the determination of fundamental stellar data is sketched. The eclipsing binaries, originally classified phenomenologically, are now understood on the basis of much firmer physics and the improved understanding has led to a morphological basis of classification. The main light curve models developed since Russell's era are presented along with the respective programs for analysis (Kallrath & Milone 1999). These models are based on the geometric effects due to eclipses and on physical proximity effects between the components. Significant progress was made in the early 1970s, when models and programs were developed to compute (synthetic) light and velocity curves directly. Such models and programs were based on spherical stars, ellipsoidal geometry and on Roche geometry. During the last 25 years the analysis of photometric and spectroscopic data of eclipsing binaries has been performed by means of synthetic light curve programs based on Roche geometry. The synthetic light curve programs, based on physical models, have contributed to our understanding of physical processes in stars and have been used to solve several important astrophysical problems. A desirable feature of a light curve program is the ability to incorporate additional astrophysics. There is a continuing need to improve the model physics, as we become more aware of the observational properties of stars.

Book Parameter determination of a binary star system

Download or read book Parameter determination of a binary star system written by Fabian Prilasnig and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-03-13 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject Astronomy, grade: 1,0, Technical University of Graz, language: English, abstract: The focus of this work about binary star systems is on model applications ans selections of an algorithm to determine the parameters of individual binaries. It consists of four major parts: a general introduction to the theory of binary stars; introductory material about spectroscopy and photometry; a description of IRAF (Imaging Reduction and Analysis Facility) - this is a software program which allows the reduction and the analysis of gathered data of astronomical objects - and its application on parameter determination of the binary system UV Leonis. Last but not least follows the presentation of the spectroscopical and photometrical results of this binary star system. The spectroscopical and photometrical results confirm that the components of the binary star system UV Leonis are main-sequence stars having the same spectral type as the Sun. From the radial velocity curves we can conclude that both components must be nearly spherical due to the sinusoidal shape of their radial velocity curves. The characteristics of their B and V light curves tell us that the orbital inclination is a little bit smaller than 90° because of the V-shaped eclipses. Our results agree with the results from the literature, while masses were spectroscopically determined here for the first time. Our value of the distance to UV Leo is consistent with trigonometric parallax from the Hipparcos mission but our error bar is smaller.
