Book FREEZONED HIGH SCHOOL Destruction Within 21st Century American Education

Download or read book FREEZONED HIGH SCHOOL Destruction Within 21st Century American Education written by Elias Sassoon and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009-07-28 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories in the collection concern a typical suburban, public high school. Typical is the operative word. Tax money poured in by the local community for extraordinary services provided to all school-age children. Money spent everywhere: acclaimed educators hired, spectacular facilities built, resources like computers and laboratory equipment acquired, extra-curricular activities created, yet the outcome? Academic failure, violence, drugs, gangs, and, drop-out rates approaching fifty percent. There is the result! Why? Where has the money gone? The resources gone? The stories provide a glimpse and a few answers. There are portraits of students, teachers, and, school administrators. In these you can figure the reasons for the failures. Often, the failure is a combination of forces, the kids themselves, instability of parents and extended families, poor teachers and administrators, and, a bureaucracy gone wild. To pinpoint any one cause as a reason for the school's record is difficult at best.

Book Administrative Justice in the 21st Century

Download or read book Administrative Justice in the 21st Century written by Michael Harris and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1999-04-01 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of administrative justice is central to the British system of public law, more embracing than judicial review, or even administrative law itself. It embraces all the mechanisms designed to achieve a proper balance between the exercise of public and quasi-public power and those affected by the exercise of that power. This book contains revised versions of the papers given at the International Conference on Administrative Justice held in Bristol in 1997. Forty years after the publication of the Franks Committee report on Tribunals and Inquiries, the conference reflected on developments since then and sought to provoke debate about how the future might unfold. Participants included policy makers, tribunal chairs and ombudsmen, other decision-takers as well as academics - a formidable combination of expertise in the operation of the administrative justice system. Among the themes addressed in the papers are the following: the effect of the changing nature of the state on current institutions; human rights and administrative justice; the relationship between decision taking, reviews of decisions, and the adjudication of appeals; and the overview of administrative justice, taking into account lessons from abroad. The new millenium provides an opportunity for the reappraisal of the British system of administrative justice; this volume presents an indispenable repository of the ideas needed to understand how that system should develop over the coming years. Book AI 2003 Advances in Artificial Intelligence

Download or read book AI 2003 Advances in Artificial Intelligence written by Tamas D. Gedeon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-12-01 with total page 1095 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consider the problem of a robot (algorithm, learning mechanism) moving along the real line attempting to locate a particular point ? . To assist the me- anism, we assume that it can communicate with an Environment (“Oracle”) which guides it with information regarding the direction in which it should go. If the Environment is deterministic the problem is the “Deterministic Point - cation Problem” which has been studied rather thoroughly [1]. In its pioneering version [1] the problem was presented in the setting that the Environment could charge the robot a cost which was proportional to the distance it was from the point sought for. The question of having multiple communicating robots locate a point on the line has also been studied [1, 2]. In the stochastic version of this problem, we consider the scenario when the learning mechanism attempts to locate a point in an interval with stochastic (i. e. , possibly erroneous) instead of deterministic responses from the environment. Thus when it should really be moving to the “right” it may be advised to move to the “left” and vice versa. Apart from the problem being of importance in its own right, the stoch- tic pointlocationproblemalsohas potentialapplications insolvingoptimization problems. Inmanyoptimizationsolutions–forexampleinimageprocessing,p- tern recognition and neural computing [5, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 19], the algorithm worksits wayfromits currentsolutionto the optimalsolutionbasedoninfor- tion that it currentlyhas. A crucialquestionis oneof determining the parameter whichtheoptimizationalgorithmshoulduse.
