Fascist Italy’s intervention in the Spanish Civil War to provide material, strategic, and diplomatic assistance led to Italy becoming a belligerent in the conflict. Following the unsuccessful military coup of July 1936 and the insurgents’ subsequent failure to take Madrid, the Corps of Voluntary Troops (CTV, Corpo Truppe Volontarie ) was created—in the words of an Italian fascist anthem—to ‘liberate Spain’, usher in a ‘new History’, ‘make the peoples oppressed by the Reds smile again’, and ‘build a fascist Europe’. Far from being insignificant or trivial, the intervention of Fascist Italy and Italian fascists on Spanish soil must be seen as one of the key aspects which contribute to the Spanish conflict’s status as an epitome of the twentieth century. Drawing on sources ranging from ministerial orders to soldiers’ diaries, this book reconstructs the evangelisation of fascism in Spain. This book is the first important study on Fascist Italy’s role in the conflict to appear in English in over 45 years. It examines Italian intervention from angles unfamiliar to English-speaking readers and will be useful to students of history and scholars interested in twentieth-century Europe, fascism, and the international dimension of the Spanish Civil War.

This book deals with the complex problem of public memory and discursive amnesia. The detailed research that underpins this book makes it no longer possible to claim that after 1945 there was an absolute and traumatic silence concerning Italy's colonial occupation of North and East Africa. However, the abiding public use of this history confirms the existence of an extremely selective and codified memory of that past. The author shows that colonial discourse persisted in historiography, newspapers, newsreels and film. Popular culture appears intertwined with political and economic interests and the power inscribed in elite and scientific knowledge. While readdressing the often mistaken historical time line that ignores that actual Italian colonial ties did not end with the fall of Fascism, but in 1960 with Somalia becoming independent, this book suggests that a new post Fascist Italian identity was the crucial issue in reappraisals of a national colonial past.

Known as the Sassi, the majority of the ancient city is composed of thousands of structures carved into a limestone cliff and clinging to its walls. The resultant menagerie of forms possesses a surprising visual uniformity and an ineffable allure. Conversely, in the 1950s Matera also served as a crucible for Italian postwar urban and architectural theory, witnessed by the Neorealist, modernist expansion of the city that developed in aversion to the Sassi. In another about-face, the previously disparaged cave city has now been recast as a major tourist destination, UNESCO World Heritage Monument, and test subject for ideas and methods of preservation. Set within a sociopolitical and architectural history of Matera from 1950 to the present, this book analyses the contemporary effects of preservation on the city and surrounding province. More broadly, it examines the relationship between and interdependence of preservation and modernism within architectural thought. To understand inconsistencies inherent to preservation, in particular its effect of catalyzing change, the study lays bare planners' and developers' use of preservation, especially for economic goals and political will. The work asserts that preservation is not a passive, curatorial pursuit: it is a cloaked manifestation of modernism and a powerful tool often used to control economies. The study demonstrates that preservation also serves to influence societies through the shaping of memory and circulation of narratives.

Nel dopoguerra, anno dopo anno, sono uscite sempre più numerose le pubblicazioni (libri-documento, memoriali, storie romanzate, ecc.) che in molteplici modi attestano la partecipazione, diretta o indiretta, dei loro autori nella storia recente. Io ritengo giusto ed educativo che, al di fuori e a completamento dei testi prettamente storici scritti dagli specialisti, la tematica della guerra sia stata e sia tuttora così ampiamente divulgata. Ben venga perciò quest’altro libro di guerra - o piuttosto di prigionia - scritto da Antonio Miceli; egli, a differenza di molti altri, da’ spazio, oltre che all’oppressione cupa che caratterizzava i Lager tedeschi, anche ad episodi di gentilezza, d’affetto e d’umana solidarietà. La qual cosa sembra suggerire che la natura umana (la sua socievolezza) - pur nel mezzo delle azioni più atroci - non arriva mai ad essere del tutto stravolta: neppure quando la feroce legge della sopravvivenza induca il singolo al più brutale egoismo. Merito non piccolo del Miceli è l’aver saputo raccontare la propria esperienza con grande senso della misura, eludendo - per innato pudore - il facile effetto dell’enfasi: ciò anche quando in rapide notazioni evoca lo sfacelo della fine, con le SS che uccidono crudelmente i moribondi e i fuggiaschi e, nel contempo, cercano di reclutare altri uomini per un’ulteriore disperata resistenza; la narrazione, pur drammatica, non è truculenta, ma realistica.
