Book Destination Torah

Download or read book Destination Torah written by I. S. D. Sassoon and published by KTAV Publishing House, Inc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book pursues a "close reading" of the biblical verses that it has chosen for reflection and of selected rabbinic sources that relate to these verses. Whereas some commentaries feel it a virtue to impose agreement between divergent traditions, the aim of Destination Torah is to allow each precious text to impart its own message. At the book's heart is the biblical revelation as a coherent whole, setting out to replace an older mythological perception of ourselves and our physical and spiritual world with its Torah view. That view is Destination Torah's quest.

Book Destination Dixie

    Book Details:
  • Author : Karen L. Cox
  • Publisher : University Press of Florida
  • Release : 2018-03-15
  • ISBN : 0813063647
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Destination Dixie written by Karen L. Cox and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once upon a time, it was impossible to drive through the South without coming across signs to “See Rock City” or similar tourist attractions. From battlegrounds to birthplaces, and sites in between, heritage tourism has always been part of how the South attracts visitors—and defines itself—yet such sites are often understudied in the scholarly literature. As the contributors to this volume make clear, the narrative of southern history told at these sites is often complicated by race, influenced by local politics, and shaped by competing memories. Included are essays on the meanings of New Orleans cemeteries; Stone Mountain, Georgia; historic Charleston, South Carolina; Yorktown National Battlefield; Selma, Alabama, as locus of the civil rights movement; and the homes of Mark Twain, Margaret Mitchell, and other notables. Destination Dixie reveals that heritage tourism in the South is about more than just marketing destinations and filling hotel rooms; it cuts to the heart of how southerners seek to shape their identity and image for a broader touring public—now often made up of northerners and southerners alike.

Book Destination Gulag

Download or read book Destination Gulag written by Steven Kashuba and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the death of Vladimir Lenin, Josef Stalin came into power and immediately moved to state control of production and distribution. The Kozlovs were branded as kulaks, their farm seized through a policy of collectivization and their crops treated as state property. Stalin interrogated, arrested, and deported dissenters in cattle cars to isolated concentration and labour camps in Siberia. They were treated like cattle, shuttled from camp to camp, fed if useful, starved if not. Unless productive, their lives were worthless to their masters. Even though the Gulag took millions of lives, the indifference towards this phenomenon is startling. The absence of hard information backed up by archival research made it difficult to unlock the horrors of the Gulag. Archives were closed and access to camp sites was forbidden. No television or cameras ever filmed the Soviet camps or its victims. Today, Russians seldom want to debate, discuss, or even acknowledge the Gulag. Russia has few monuments to the victims of Stalin's execution squads and concentration camps. There is no national monument or place of mourning and no government inquiries into what happened in the past. It is as if the deportees left no footprints. It is my fervent hope that Destination Gulag will capture the tragedy, and perhaps the triumph, of the deportation of the Kozlov family to Siberia.
