Even the work of Pous sin, its most outstanding painter and the object of a continu ous stream of encomiums stretching back to his own life time, has only recently begun to be explored with the full scholarly apparatus of contemporary art history, and a definitive monograph is probably still some years in the future. La Tour and the Le Nain brothers have been intro duced into the company of great artists only within the past Foreword quarter century, and with significant discoyeries still being made complete evaluations are as yet not even to be contem plated. After numerous casual encounters with the frequent ly handsome if astonishingly varied canvases of Bourdon, one becomes suspicious of the ever repeated dismissal of his work as merely eclectic and longs for a revealing analysis of his purposes and patronage. The harsh Latinity of Valentin, the sumptuous strangeness ofVignon, the audacious languor of Antoine Coypel, these are some of the many topics that still await careful investigation and evaluation.

Until the seventeenth century, most mapmakers in France were painters. Schooled in techniques of drawing and perspective—and in the careful study of nature that we associate with early modernity—they also learned the more expressive and imaginative Mannerist forms that dominated French painting in this period. Their maps draw on conventions of both painting and mapmaking to create beautiful, informative, and persuasive images for a wide variety of contexts and purposes. In this book, Camille Serchuk explores the strategies these cartographers deployed to weave together accuracy, ornament, and artifice in maps at all scales. Looking beyond the techniques of measurement and perspective, Serchuk shows how painterly interventions framed and manipulated the appearance and reception of cartographic objects. Lies of the Land is an important new assessment of the character and status of early modern cartography that challenges binary distinctions between art and science and between decorative and epistemic images. In part the outcome of scholars' focus on the place of the city in the establishment and dissemination of common culture, the attention paid to festivals also arises from the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, which reaches across the usual demarcation lines between disciplines such as cultural, political and economic history, literature, and the visual and performing arts. The scholars contributing to this volume include representatives from all these disciplines. Their essays explore common themes in festival culture across Renaissance Europe, including the use of festival in political self-fashioning and the construction of a national self-image. Moreover, in their detailed examination of particular types of festival, they challenge generalizations and demonstrate the degree to which these events were influenced the personality of the prince, the sources of funding for the ceremony, and the role of festival managers. Usually perceived as binding forces promoting social cohesion, festivals held the potential for discord, as some of the essays here reveal. Le jeune Karol de Roswald connut donc le monde et la vie de bonne heure, de trop bonne heure peut-être, mais par la théorie et non par la pratique. Dans le louable dessein d'élever son âme, sa mère ne laissa approcher de lui que des personnes distinguées, dont les préceptes et l'exemple devaient lui être salutaires. Il sut bien que dehors il y avait des méchants et des fous, mais il n'apprit qu'à les éviter, nullement à les connaître. On lui enseigna bien à secourir les malheureux; les portes du palais où s'écoula son enfance étaient toujours ouvertes aux nécessiteux; mais, tout en les assistant, il s'habitua à mépriser la cause de leur détresse et à regarder cette plaie comme irrémédiable dans l'humanité. Le désordre, la paresse, l'ignorance ou le manque de jugement, sources fatales d'égarement et de misère, lui parurent, avec raison, incurables chez les individus. On ne lui apprit point à croire que les masses doivent et peuvent insensiblement s'en affranchir, et qu'en prenant l'humanité corps à corps, en discutant avec elle, en la gourmandent, et la caressant tour à tour, comme un enfant qu'on aime, en lui pardonnant beaucoup de rechutes pour en obtenir quelques progrès, on fait plus pour elle qu'en jetant à ses membres perclus ou gangrenés le secours restreint de la compassion.
