Book excerpt: Becoming someone is a learning process; and what we learn is the new values around which, if we succeed, our lives will come to turn. Agents transform themselves in the process of, for example, becoming parents, embarking on careers, or acquiring a passion for music or politics. How can such activity be rational, if the reason for engaging in the relevant pursuit is only available to the person one will become? How is it psychologically possible to feel the attraction of a form of concern that is not yet one's own? How can the work done to arrive at the finish line be ascribed to one who doesn't (really) know what one is doing, or why one is doing it? In Aspiration, Agnes Callard asserts that these questions belong to the theory of aspiration. Aspirants are motivated by proleptic reasons, acknowledged defective versions of the reasons they expect to eventually grasp. The psychology of such a transformation is marked by intrinsic conflict between their old point of view on value and the one they are trying to acquire. They cannot adjudicate this conflict by deliberating or choosing or deciding-rather, they resolve it by working to see the world in a new way. This work has a teleological structure: by modeling oneself on the person he or she is trying to be, the aspirant brings that person into being. Because it is open to us to engage in an activity of self-creation, we are responsible for having become the kinds of people we are.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Svetasvataropanisad is considered to be the most beautiful of all the Upanisads, the philosophical texts of the Hindu religion. In this new translation, Devadatta Kali takes a fresh look, and works from a new premise that the Svetasvatara represents a Saivite (one of the Hindu sects) point of view. This he claims, allows its intended meaning to shine forth. The translation and commentary brings to life the seer Svetasvatara, who from time to time delights in provocation and word play, allowing the reader to share the joy of his liberated vision that all this world is an expression of the Divine. This translation aims to capture the seer's ecstatic response to the wonders of creation while pointing the reader towards the even greater wonder of its source. Devadata Kali's purpose in his translation and the commentary is to convey the vibrant immediacy of the Sanskrit original and strip away many centuries of exegetical accretions in order to make Svetasvatara's message heard as he intended--as a statement of profound insight designed to guide, inspire, and enlighten. Features of the text: 13 pages of uninterrupted fl ow of the translation of the Upanisad.6 chapters of the Upanisad in original Sanskrit with English translation and commentary. Two appendixes giving the word-by-word analysis of the Sanskrit and a complete tabulation of the correspondences with other texts and internal corresponds within the Upanisad itself.Index including bilingual references and major themes by verse.

Book The Light of the Soul

Download or read book The Light of the Soul written by Alice Bailey and published by Lucis Publishing Companies. This book was released on 2012-05-14 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an original paraphrase, with commentary, of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The Yoga Sutras are of ancient origin, first reduced to writing by Patanjali, who is considered the founder of the Raja Yoga School. Control of the mind and its illumination by the soul are brought about through the practice of Raja Yoga. The Sutras have a power and a timelessness about them which demonstrate the accuracy with which they pinpoint the basic truths of human evolution from subservience to personality clamours to the serene freedom of the soul. Most human problems today originate in selfish desire; the prostitution of the feeling nature to self-centred action. This is also brought out clearly in the teaching of the Lord Buddha, the treading of the Noble Eight-Fold path providing the only way out of the maze: "Right Values; Right Speech; Right Mode of Living; Right Thinking; Right Expression; Right Conduct; Right Effort; Right Rapture or True Happiness". These are attributes of the soul. Patanjali explores exhaustively the means, the techniques and the mental posture which create the connecting thread between the form-centred personality and these stages towards spiritual achievement and soul fusion.

Book Path to Eternal Bliss with consciousness

The book is divided in 5 topics of Consciousness, Spiritual Experiences and Miracles, Holy Path, Spiritual Quest and Renunciation. Saint Khemraja chief disciple of Sage Vasaguta has said that the aspirants who do upasana and meditation day and night do not achieve anything even after years of practice. These aspirants are ignorant in a way bound by worldly affairs and maya. The realization of self has not taken place. When full realization has not been achieved, that when consciousness has not been filled with independent state of supreme God consciousness. Till then everything is useless. There will be no results. There will be no progress on the path to God realization. So, it is very important to maintain Consciousness of Supreme God at all time for the real benefit of one’s efforts. The independent state of God consciousness is also found in each and every being. In accordance with Vijnan Bhirav one must find this God consciousness. To discover it one should concentrate on totality of individuality which is the state of universal consciousness. By doing this practice one will get differentiated state of universal consciousness above the individuality of consciousness. One has to be aware of God consciousness at all the times in true spirit with utmost love dedication and seriousness. This God consciousness is most intoxicating if cultivated in right and true manner. Without maintaining the consciousness the progress is hindered. This consciousness should be endeavored to hold it in all the three states.

Book The Revelation of Saint John

Download or read book The Revelation of Saint John written by Zachary F. Lansdowne and published by Weiser Books. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revelation of St. John, the last book of the canonical Bible, has been a mystery since it first appeared. No other part of the Bible has caused more controversy. Traditional interpretations of the book fall into one of three categories: the major prophecies that are supposed to have been fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D.; the historical view that Revelation predicts the course of human events from the founding of Christianity to the end of the world; or the futurist view that Revelation predicts events that will occur at the end of the world. It's actually none of the above, writes Zachary F. Lansdowne, a leading expert in the field of spiritual initiation. In the Introduction to this rich and complex interpretation, he writes, "According to its own verses, the Revelation is concerned with the present time, which is whatever time we happen to be reading it, and contains information that we can apply immediately to become blessed."This is not a book about "end times" or Armageddon and when it might come. This is a book written entirely in symbols, concealing a path for early Christians, and for the contemporary reader. Lansdowne has applied a unique psychological method of interpretation that takes each symbol as depicting some aspect of human consciousness rather than an eternal event, thus showing that the Revelation is actually a detailed instruction for the spiritual journey--a map to the wakening of higher consciousness. Moreover, while the Revelation appears in the great lineage of Judeo-Christian tradition, Lansdowne shows that its instruction can be appreciated and applied to seekers from any tradition.Lansdowne's line-by-line and verse-by-verse interpretation--presented here in an easy-to-read side-by-side format--is a manual for the true seeker who would follow teachings of Jesus as they were and are laid out, rather than as they have been interpreted by theologians and biblical historians. The Revelation of St. John, when unlocked by the key of psychological methodology, is revealed to contain ideas from many diverse wisdom traditions and philosophies--archangels in Judaism, chakras and kundalini in Hinduism, Buddhist mindfulness, the redemptive power of love in Christianity, and absolute standards of comparison in Platonic philosophy. Zachary Lansdowne's revelatory text makes these teachings of the path to true soul initiation available to seekers from every spiritual tradition.

Book A Treatise on White Magic

Download or read book A Treatise on White Magic written by Alice Bailey and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Treatise on White Magic is a book by Alice Bailey. It is considered to be among the most important by students of her writings, as it is less abstract than most, and deals with many important subjects of her works in an introductory, even programmatic fashion. Bailey promulgated White Magic as a discipline to serve humanity. It is an esoteric text, which Bailey said was dictated telepathically by the Tibetan Master, Djwal Khul. It is offered as a "basic textbook" for the Western aspirant to initiation, and is divided into fifteen rules of magic, each one taking the reader further into the mysteries of spirituality. Topics discussed include: how an aspirant can best prepare himself for service, the various ray types of their influences, the relationship between the macrocosm and microcosm, the spiritual, causal, astral and physical realms and their interactions, the spiritual psychology of man, The Hierarchy of Masters, esoteric groups and schools, the spiritual centers (or chakras), the occult concept of the Seven Rays, meditation work and much more. One of the main themes is that of soul control.

Book Vijnanabhairava or Divine Consciousness

Download or read book Vijnanabhairava or Divine Consciousness written by Jaideva Singh and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vijnanabhairava is a very ancient book on Yoga. It studiously eschews mechanical worship, external rites and ceremonies and goes directly to the heart of the problem of the union of human consciousness with the Divine. There is no theoretical discussion in the book. It describes 112 types of Yoga each of which is a precious gem delineating the mystic approach to the Divine. For this purpose, it makes full use of all the aspects of human life - prana, manas, imagination and intuition. The book has for the first time been translated into English. The translation of each verse is followed by copious expository notes, which contain not only all that is of any value in the Sanskrit commentaries, but also many practical suggestions made by Swami Lakshmana Joo on the basis of his personal experience of these Yogas. In order to understand the philosophical background of these Yogas, the reader is advised to go through the introductory portion of the author's Pratyabhijnahrdayam or the Siva-sutras.

Book The Yoga of Delight Wonder and Astonishment

Download or read book The Yoga of Delight Wonder and Astonishment written by Jaideva Singh and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1991-08-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers 112 dhāraṇās -- 112 meditations or techniques -- for experiencing the extraordinary and paradoxical reality of unbounded consciousness called Bhairava. In her initial question to Bhairava, the Goddess asks him to reveal his own essential nature to her. Bhairava praises her question as pertaining to the very essence of the Tantra, and he praises the transcendent aspect of the Supreme. The Goddess then beseeches Bhairava to teach her the method by which she may gain an understanding of this blissful, nondual reality. The methods offered here hint at a profound secret: only a subtle shift of attention is required in order to bring this astonishing reality into view. The shift will open a chink in the apparently impregnable smoothness of the ordinary world. Here are 112 secret gestures of attention that will reveal infinity. True to its tantric provenance, the Vijñāna-bhairava discovers Supreme Reality in unexpected and bizarre places. As one scans the great variety of methods it offers, one is struck by the contrast in tone between this text and the classical expositions of Yoga. While equally serious, the Vijñāna-bhairava has a playful approach anchored in the confidence that one can really never stray from the reality of Shiva. Because it is grounded in the tantric realization, the text has a freedom to explore meditational domains puritanically disdained by classical Yoga. All things, all experiences, all moments are bathed in the unassailable purity of the absolute consciousness. Only a shift of attention, a subtle refocusing, is required for that extraordinary reality to come into view. The Vijñāna-bhairava contains no sustained philosophical position. Rather, it is an instructional guide that continuously invites the practitioner to look more deeply and more subtly at her own experience. The blissful and shattering realizations that she will undergo as a result of its method serves as the only form of proof or justification. This is an initiatory manual that instructs in the intricacies of the advanced sport of Shiva.

Book Mystical Union

Download or read book Mystical Union written by Stephen J. Bost and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-12-02 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wisdom was in abundance in the ancient societies of Greece and India, but today it seems to be in short supply. Why is that? Where did wisdom go? This book was written to help us rediscover that lost wisdom and to incorporate the concepts of the sages and the mystics into our lives. The next parts are some of the new manuscripts I have included which talk about some of the differences between eastern and western religious thought and the ideas of the Islamic mystics, in which their thoughts and ideas could help us all solve our problems with radical Islamic ideology.
