Book excerpt: A concise and current treatment of the subject of nuclear power safety, this work addresses itself to such issues of public concern as: radioactivity in routine effluents and its effect on human health and the environment, serious reactor accidents and their consequences, transportation accidents involving radioactive waste, the disposal of radioactive waste, particularly high-level wastes, and the possible theft of special nuclear materials and their fabrication into a weapon by terrorists. The implementation of the defense-in-depth concept of nuclear power safety is also discussed. Of interest to all undergraduate and graduate students of nuclear engineering, this work assumes a basic understanding of scientific and engineering principles and some familiarity with nuclear power reactors

Book Design and Construction of Nuclear Power Plants

Download or read book Design and Construction of Nuclear Power Plants written by Rüdiger Meiswinkel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite all the efforts being put into expanding renewable energy sources, large-scale power stations will be essential as part of a reliable energy supply strategy for a longer period. Given that they are low on CO2 emissions, many countries are moving into or expanding nuclear energy to cover their baseload supply. Building structures required for nuclear plants whose protective function means they are classified as safety-related, have to meet particular construction requirements more stringent than those involved in conventional construction. This book gives a comprehensive overview from approval aspects given by nuclear and construction law, with special attention to the interface between plant and construction engineering, to a building structure classification. All life cycle phases are considered, with the primary focus on execution. Accidental actions on structures, the safety concept and design and fastening systems are exposed to a particular treatment. Selected chapters from the German concrete yearbook are now being published in the new English "Beton-Kalender Series" for the benefit of an international audience. Since it was founded in 1906, the Ernst & Sohn "Beton-Kalender" has been supporting developments in reinforced and prestressed concrete. The aim was to publish a yearbook to reflect progress in "ferro-concrete" structures until - as the book's first editor, Fritz von Emperger (1862-1942), expressed it - the "tempestuous development" in this form of construction came to an end. However, the "Beton-Kalender" quickly became the chosen work of reference for civil and structural engineers, and apart from the years 1945-1950 has been published annually ever since.

Book Lessons Learned from the Fukushima Nuclear Accident for Improving Safety of U S Nuclear Plants

Download or read book Lessons Learned from the Fukushima Nuclear Accident for Improving Safety of U S Nuclear Plants written by National Research Council (U.S.). Committee on Lessons Learned from the Fukushima Nuclear Accident for Improving Safety and Security of U.S. Nuclear Plants and published by National Academy Press. This book was released on 2014-10-29 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The March 11, 2011, Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami sparked a humanitarian disaster in northeastern Japan. They were responsible for more than 15,900 deaths and 2,600 missing persons as well as physical infrastructure damages exceeding $200 billion. The earthquake and tsunami also initiated a severe nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Three of the six reactors at the plant sustained severe core damage and released hydrogen and radioactive materials. Explosion of the released hydrogen damaged three reactor buildings and impeded onsite emergency response efforts. The accident prompted widespread evacuations of local populations, large economic losses, and the eventual shutdown of all nuclear power plants in Japan. "Lessons Learned from the Fukushima Nuclear Accident for Improving Safety and Security of U.S. Nuclear Plants" is a study of the Fukushima Daiichi accident. This report examines the causes of the crisis, the performance of safety systems at the plant, and the responses of its operators following the earthquake and tsunami. The report then considers the lessons that can be learned and their implications for U.S. safety and storage of spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste, commercial nuclear reactor safety and security regulations, and design improvements. "Lessons Learned" makes recommendations to improve plant systems, resources, and operator training to enable effective ad hoc responses to severe accidents. This report's recommendations to incorporate modern risk concepts into safety regulations and improve the nuclear safety culture will help the industry prepare for events that could challenge the design of plant structures and lead to a loss of critical safety functions. In providing a broad-scope, high-level examination of the accident, "Lessons Learned" is meant to complement earlier evaluations by industry and regulators. This in-depth review will be an essential resource for the nuclear power industry, policy makers, and anyone interested in the state of U.S. preparedness and response in the face of crisis situations.

Book Methodologies for Seismic Safety Evaluation of Existing Nuclear Installations

Download or read book Methodologies for Seismic Safety Evaluation of Existing Nuclear Installations written by IAEA and published by International Atomic Energy Agency. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience shows that an assessment of the seismic capacity of an existing operating facility can be required for a number of reasons, for example identification of potential seismic vulnerabilities based on operating experience events or the periodic safety review programme. This publication covers the seismic safety evaluation programmes to be performed on existing nuclear installations in order to ensure that the required fundamental safety functions are available, with particular attention to the safe shutdown of reactors. It includes lessons learned based on the IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety following the Fukushima Daiichi accident, and updated methodologies for seismic safety evaluation of nuclear installations.

Book Containment System of Generation 3 Nuclear Power Plants

Download or read book Containment System of Generation 3 Nuclear Power Plants written by Marco Mainardi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explains the basic safety principles which are at the basis of the design of nuclear power plants, focusing on containemt system: the phisical barrier that separates the reactor and its components from external environment. At the beginning of the civil use of nuclear technology, containment was designed to protect and isolate external environment from the risk of an uncontrolled leakage of radioactive material from primary circuit. In the last two decades, the function of this component has been extended also to protect the nuclear facility from the risk of an external attack - natural or terroristic. Technical descriptions, drawings and schemes are given as supporting material.

Book Containment Structures of U S Nuclear Power Plants

Download or read book Containment Structures of U S Nuclear Power Plants written by Hansraj Ashar and published by American Society of Mechanical Engineers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, expert authors recognize the renewed relevance of nuclear power in the U.S. after decades of stagnation. It was imperative to develop an up-to-date, scholarly work on containment structures, incorporating the underlying codes, regulations, safety significance, history, design philosophy, design experience, operating experience, and application to new design. This book will benefit the nuclear industry, as it transitions to a new generation of designers, constructors, and regulators. The book will be a valuable asset to the nuclear utilities, nuclear regulators, A/Es, and international organizations involved in the design and construction of Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs).
