Since touch displays, smart surfaces, and internet connectivity are present in most vehicle segments, the growing resemblance of in-vehicle experiences with mobile experiences leads to user expectations on par with smartphones. While manufacturers are faced with providing suitable service offerings that are safe to use, they must also identify services to exclude or limit, without encouraging drivers to resort back to their mobile devices. This increasingly complex in-vehicle experience design process is being shaped by new stakeholders, including operating system providers and application developers. Design of the In-vehicle Experience examines the challenging and changing relationships between manufacturers (that lack in software development and mobile experience design skills) and new stakeholders (that lack the decades of experience designing for the driving context). The report also discusses augmenting and expanding existing guidelines and best practices to address the challenges of modern in-vehicle experience design. A deeper, more nuanced understanding of the in-car driving experience will enable designers to generate user-centered concepts to improve the in-vehicle experience. Understanding the qualitative nature of the driving experience is not only useful for the effective design of vehicles, but also for the development of novel transportation technologies and infrastructure improvements. Critically, this work has implications for the design of self-driving technologies being developed and deployed today. This thesis asks: How we might enable researchers and designers to gain a novel perspective of the driving experience centered on naturalistic driving events and environments? To answer this question, I developed a platform, a method, and a dataset aimed at understanding driver's on-road experiences. The work presents novel insights attained by examining drivers in experimental as well as prosaic scenarios. It also positions the work relative to other approaches for understanding, eliciting, and tagging driver states. This thesis has three major components: Part One presents the Real Road Driving Simulator, a platform that can be used to safely simulate an autonomous vehicle on real roads in order to enable designers to evaluate prototypes and interaction principles intended to be deployed in autonomous driving scenarios. Part Two presents a method to safely and reliably elicit a state of distress in drivers of single-occupancy vehicles. This methodology can be used to test novel approaches for identifying driver states, as well as evaluate the effectiveness of interventions intended to address such a state of distress. Part Three develops an open-source dataset and tagging methodology using 50 real-world commutes. I discuss a novel approach for tagging data to leverage both qualitative and quantitative data to understand driver experience within the context of the urban commute.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alternative Perspective for User Experience 1 (APEX 01) is a two-year collaborative design project sponsored by Honda Research Americas. Honda asked university students from The Ohio State University and ArtCenter College of Design to develop and demonstrate the user experience of a 2030 Autonomous, Electric, Connected vehicle. The interdisciplinary student team conducted trend research, future forecasting, defined user experience scenarios, and developed a concept interior capable of enabling the desired user experiences. Following concept generation, a full-scale interior mockup was designed and constructed in order to demonstrate the user experience. One element of the APEX 01 user experience is a reconfigurable interior. This paper will discuss the design of the reconfigurable vehicle interior mockup. The reconfigurable interior is capable of shifting between several usage modes, including a novel seating configuration mimicking a living room. To enable the various usage modes, a folding steering wheel, collapsible pedal, lifting roof, and moving seating were developed. These mechanized items were integrated with the aesthetic design of the vehicle interior. User experience scenarios were choreographed in order to determine the necessary speed for each mechanism. Software was developed to control the position of the various elements. The interior mockup was assembled and the motion of the elements validated. On May 15th, 2018 APEX 01 was presented to Honda, allowing Honda executives to experience OSU and ArtCenter's vision of future autonomous vehicles.
