Book Design of Software and Hardware Components for a Six degrees of Freedom Optical Position Sensor

Download or read book Design of Software and Hardware Components for a Six degrees of Freedom Optical Position Sensor written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the evaluation of a fully compatible and operational data acquisition system for a six-degrees of freedom optical sensor (SixDOF). The SixDOF, developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory by Charles Vann, is capable of tracking an object's position in all its six degrees of freedom without any datum specification by means of two reflective surfaces mounted on the object. To make the SixDOF operational and thus validate its underlying physics, a signal processing system has been designed so that information from the sensor is transferred accurately and efficiently to a computer. In addition, a six-degrees of freedom positioning stage has been built in efforts to calibrate the sensor in real time. A crucial design constraint is the necessity to build the complete data acquisition system so that it be small and most importantly portable. The prototype of the SixDOF system proved to be capable of crudely detecting changes in the position of an object in all six spatial degrees of freedom. An accuracy of around 0.5 mm is estimated presently even though the position of the two reflectors on the object is seen to significantly influence the accuracy of the sensor. The resolution of the sensor is not quite understood yet because of uncertainties in the actual spot size of the laser, however, field of the view has been seen to increase as the resolution decreases. The decoupling (calibration) of the sensor data proved to be rather successful although some coupling still exists. This coupling, however, is almost certain to come from the crudeness in the alignment of the optics within the sensor.

Book Six Degree of Freedom Sensor

Download or read book Six Degree of Freedom Sensor written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This small, non-contact optical sensor increases the capability and flexibility of computer controlled machines by detecting its relative position to a workpiece in all six degrees of freedom (DOF). At a fraction of the cost, it is over 200 times faster and up to 25 times more accurate than competing 3-DOF sensors. Applications range from flexible manufacturing to a 6-DOF mouse for computers. Until now, highly agile and accurate machines have been limited by their inability to adjust to changes in their tasks. By enabling them to sense all six degrees of position, these machines can now adapt to new and complicated tasks without human intervention or delay--simplifying production, reducing costs, and enhancing the value and capability of flexible manufacturing.

Book Computer Aided Engineering Design

Download or read book Computer Aided Engineering Design written by Anupam Saxena and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-08 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new discipline is said to attain maturity when the subject matter takes the shape of a textbook. Several textbooks later, the discipline tends to acquire a firm place in the curriculum for teaching and learning. Computer Aided Engineering Design (CAED), barely three decades old, is interdisciplinary in nature whose boundaries are still expanding. However, it draws its core strength from several acknowledged and diverse areas such as computer graphics, differential geometry, Boolean algebra, computational geometry, topological spaces, numerical analysis, mechanics of solids, engineering design and a few others. CAED also needs to show its strong linkages with Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM). As is true with any growing discipline, the literature is widespread in research journals, edited books, and conference proceedings. Various textbooks have appeared with different biases, like geometric modeling, computer graphics, and CAD/CAM over the last decade. This book goes into mathematical foundations and the core subjects of CAED without allowing itself to be overshadowed by computer graphics. It is written in a logical and thorough manner for use mainly by senior and graduate level students as well as users and developers of CAD software. The book covers (a) The fundamental concepts of geometric modeling so that a real understanding of designing synthetic surfaces and solid modeling can be achieved. (b) A wide spectrum of CAED topics such as CAD of linkages and machine elements, finite element analysis, optimization. (c) Application of these methods to real world problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite widespread interest in virtual reality, research and development efforts in synthetic environments (SE)â€"the field encompassing virtual environments, teleoperation, and hybridsâ€"have remained fragmented. Virtual Reality is the first integrated treatment of the topic, presenting current knowledge along with thought-provoking vignettes about a future where SE is commonplace. This volume discusses all aspects of creating a system that will allow human operators to see, hear, smell, taste, move about, give commands, respond to conditions, and manipulate objects effectively in a real or virtual environment. The committee of computer scientists, engineers, and psychologists on the leading edge of SE development explores the potential applications of SE in the areas of manufacturing, medicine, education, training, scientific visualization, and teleoperation in hazardous environments. The committee also offers recommendations for development of improved SE technology, needed studies of human behavior and evaluation of SE systems, and government policy and infrastructure.

Book Syntactic Pattern Recognition Applications

Download or read book Syntactic Pattern Recognition Applications written by K.S. Fu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The many different mathematical techniques used to solve pattem recognition problems may be grouped into two general approaches: the decision-theoretic (or discriminant) approach and the syntactic (or structural) approach. In the decision-theoretic approach, aset of characteristic measurements, called features, are extracted from the pattems. Each pattem is represented by a feature vector, and the recognition of each pattem is usually made by partitioning the feature space. Applications of decision-theoretic approach indude character recognition, medical diagnosis, remote sensing, reliability and socio-economics. A relatively new approach is the syntactic approach. In the syntactic approach, ea ch pattem is expressed in terms of a composition of its components. The recognition of a pattem is usually made by analyzing the pattem structure according to a given set of rules. Earlier applications of the syntactic approach indude chromosome dassification, English character recognition and identification of bubble and spark chamber events. The purpose of this monograph is to provide a summary of the major reeent applications of syntactic pattem recognition. After a brief introduction of syntactic pattem recognition in Chapter 1, the nin e mai n chapters (Chapters 2-10) can be divided into three parts. The first three chapters concem with the analysis of waveforms using syntactic methods. Specific application examples indude peak detection and interpretation of electro cardiograms and the recognition of speech pattems. The next five chapters deal with the syntactic recognition of two-dimensional pictorial pattems.

Book Readings in Computer Vision

Download or read book Readings in Computer Vision written by Martin A. Fischler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of computer vision combines techniques from physics, mathematics, psychology, artificial intelligence, and computer science to examine how machines might construct meaningful descriptions of their surrounding environment. The editors of this volume, prominent researchers and leaders of the SRI International AI Center Perception Group, have selected sixty papers, most published since 1980, with the viewpoint that computer vision is concerned with solving seven basic problems: Reconstructing 3D scenes from 2D images Decomposing images into their component parts Recognizing and assigning labels to scene objects Deducing and describing relations among scene objects Determining the nature of computer architectures that can support the visual function Representing abstractions in the world of computer memory Matching stored descriptions to image representation Each chapter of this volume addresses one of these problems through an introductory discussion, which identifies major ideas and summarizes approaches, and through reprints of key research papers. Two appendices on crucial assumptions in image interpretation and on parallel architectures for vision applications, a glossary of technical terms, and a comprehensive bibliography and index complete the volume.

Book Navigation and MIS in Orthopedic Surgery

Download or read book Navigation and MIS in Orthopedic Surgery written by James B. Stiehl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-02-15 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reader is enthusiastically encouraged to tackle this second edition text in two ways. The first is simply to scan chapters with their introductions, summaries and conclusion points. Second, is to delve into those sections of seeming greater interest depending upon one’s s- cialty and role. The expansion and quality of this material speak to the success of the first edition by these editors and many similar authors. In addition, the continued and enlarged interest in computer assisted Orthopedic surgery indicates the relevance and enduring importance of this advance in our field of musculoskeletal surgery. I suggest that no other discipline in surgery is so appropriately suited to computer assistance including robotic performance. Orthopedics has always seemed unique to this author in that it focuses more than any other medical field on gross physical, mechanical structure. We deal nearly exclusively in physical repair of broken elements, rearrangement of deformed ones, and resurfacing or refurbishing those that are diseased in a way that has altered their mechanical integrity, shapes, and other structural aspects.
