Book Design of an In core Fission Spectrum Neutron Irradiation Facility with Pneumatic Sample Transfer at a Research Reactor

Download or read book Design of an In core Fission Spectrum Neutron Irradiation Facility with Pneumatic Sample Transfer at a Research Reactor written by Brandon Alexander De Luna and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis was to provide instruction on the design, optimization and construction of a fast neutron irradiation facility with pneumatic sample transfer at the Nuclear Engineering Teaching Lab (NETL) reactor core. This facility will be used for fast neutron activation analysis and fast neutron fission in uranium and plutonium samples. Various materials and geometric designs were researched and modeled in Monte Carlo Neutral Particle (MCNP) code for the filtration of thermal neutrons from the NETL reactor core. The approach to these models were described as well as the subsequent processes in yielding the finalized design. The model geometry was recreated in SCALE to provide estimations for expected fission product activities. The design that was built was based off a layered cylindrical format that was placed inside a modified 3-element (EL) container. This container was created to fit into the 3-EL irradiation position of the core. The design balances the need to maintain high total neutron flux with the careful shaping of a neutron spectrum to be as close to the Watt fission spectrum as possible. The models indicated that the thermal+epithermal neutron flux was reduced by five orders of magnitude while leaving the fast neutron flux virtually untouched. That value was tallied after the reactor core flux is shaped by the neutron absorbing materials. The fast:(thermal+epithermal) flux ratio should exceed 100:1 with an integrated fast flux value (defined > 0.001 MeV) of at least 7.8 x 1011 n cm−2 s−1. The calculated activity from the irradiation of 10 mg Pu via SCALE was determined to be 94.97 MBq

Book Fast Fuel Test Reactor

Download or read book Fast Fuel Test Reactor written by and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fast Fuel Test Reactor (FFTR) is a nuclear facility for the purpose of irradiating samples of fuels and structural components for use in fast reactors. The core consists of a plate type element in a square configuration. Beryllium metal between the fuel elements is used to obtain a neutron energy spectrum in the hard intermediate region. Cooling of the core and test specimens is accomplished by means of liquid sodium. The design concept was carried through in sufficient degree in the following areas of preliminary concern: number and size of irradiation facilities, sample power requirements, plant layout to evaluate site requirements, plant and nuclear design parameters to evaluate essential equipment requirements. plant-capital-cost estimate, annual- operating-cost estimate, and estimate of construction time schedule.

Book Design of Central Irradiation Facilities for the MITR II Research Reactor

Download or read book Design of Central Irradiation Facilities for the MITR II Research Reactor written by Paul Christopher Meagher and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design analysis studies have been made for various in-core irradiation facility designs which are presently used, or proposed for future use in the MITR-II. The information obtained includes reactivity effects, core flux and power distributions, and estimates of the safety limits and limiting conditions for operation. A finite-difference, diffusion theory computer code was employed in two and three dimensions, and with three and fifteen group energy schemes. The facilities investigated include the single-element molybdenum sample holder, a proposed double-element irradiation facility and a proposed central irradiation facility design encompassing most of the area of the three central core positions. In addition, a comparison of the effects of various absorber materials has been made for a core configuration which includes three solid dummies. Flux levels in the molybdenum holder facility and in the beam ports were calculated for both three and five dummy cores. Flooding the sample tube in these cases was found to increase the safety and operating limits, but not to unacceptable levels for an 8 inch blade height. For the five dummy case, the operating limit in the C-ring was predicted to reach its maximum allowed value at a blade bank height of 13.6 inches. The reactivity effect of flooding was calculated to be 0.19%AK for the five dummy case, in direct agreement with the measured value. Flooging the large sample channel in the double element facility was found to increase the reactivity by 1.5 6%AK ff and also to cause an unacceptable power-peaking. The proposed central irradiation facility is a thermal flux-trap which could produce thermal flux values of up to 2.0 x 1014 n/cm 2 sec. Computer estimates show that flooding this facility's central sample tube would increase this value to 2.5 x 1014 n/cm2 sec, without resulting in an unacceptable power peak.

Book Internet accessible Hot Cell with Gamma Spectroscopy at the Missouri University of Science and Technology Research Nuclear Reactor

Download or read book Internet accessible Hot Cell with Gamma Spectroscopy at the Missouri University of Science and Technology Research Nuclear Reactor written by Edwin Joseph Grant and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A dual-chambered internet-accessible heavily shielded facility with pneumatic access to the University of Missouri Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) 200 kW Research Nuclear Reactor (MSTR) core has been built and is currently under low level irradiation testing. The facility allows distance users doing collaborative work with Missouri S&T researchers to manipulate and analyze neutron irradiated samples remotely. The system consists of two shielded compartments, one for multiple sample storage (up to 11 samples), and the other for isolated radiation measurements and spectroscopy. The second chamber has multiple detector ports, graded shielding, and has the capability to support gamma spectroscopy using a multitude of radiation detectors such as an HPGe detector. Both these chambers are connected though a rapid pneumatic system (rabbit) with access to the MSTR reactor. This new internet-based system will complement the current bare rabbit tube (BRT) and cadmium lined rabbit tube (CRT) facilities. The total transportation time between the core and the hot cell, for samples weighing approximately ten grams is roughly 3.0 seconds. This work was funded by the DOE grant number DE-FG07-07ID14852 and will expand the capabilities of research at the MSTR, and allows others to actively participate in research"--Abstract, leaf iv.

Book Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes

Download or read book Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA Radiation Technology Repo. This book was released on 2012 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication addresses recent developments in neutron generator (NG) technology. It presents information on compact instruments with high neutron yield to be used for neutron activation analysis (NAA) and prompt gamma neutron activation analysis in combination with high count rate spectrometers. Traditional NGs have been shown to be effective for applications including borehole logging, homeland security, nuclear medicine and the on-line analysis of aluminium, coal and cement. Pulsed fast thermal neutron analysis, as well as tagged and timed neutron analysis, are additional techniques which can be applied using NG. Furthermore, NG can effectively be used for elemental analysis and is also effective for analysis of hidden materials by neutron radiography. Useful guidelines for developing NG based research laboratories are also provided in this publication.
