Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In integrated photonic circuits photodetector is one of key components, modern applications require that photodetector has a high 3 dB bandwidth. The ultimate limit for the response time for conventional photodetectors (like vertically illuminated photodiode, Schotky photodiode, MSM photodetector etc.) is given by the transit time of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs, it can not be minimised by decreasing the thickness of the depletion region without reducing quantum efficiency (i.e. the fraction of the incident light that is absorbed). Waveguide photodetectors have been developed to overcome this trade-off. In the waveguide photodetector light propagates in a direction that is parallel to the junction interfaces and is perpendicular to the drift of the generated electron-hole pairs. This geometry decouples absorption length from the drift length. Therefore the waveguide photodetector can have both a very thin active region for short transit time and a long absorption length for a high quantum efficiency. In this thesis , I designed germanium on silicon photodetector. The main designing tool was full vectorial 3D Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulator. Bandwidth-efficiency product was used as the main figure of merit. The input is silicon rib waveguide, which is optimised to maximize transmitted power. For optimal dimensions of the device calculated responsivity is 0.94 A/W, efficiency is 83 %, bandwidth is 64 GHz and bandwidth x efficiency product is 53 GHz.

The second edition of "Photodetectors" fully updates the popular first edition with updated information covering the state-of-the-art in modern photodetectors. The 2nd edition starts with basic metrology of photodetectors and common figures-of-merit to compare various devices. It follows with chapters that discuss single-photon detection with Avalanche Photodiodes; organic photodetectors that can be inkjet printed; and silicon-germanium PDs popular in burgeoning field of Silicon Photonics. Book excerpt: In the field of silicon photonics, it has only recently become possible to build complex systems. As system power constraints and complexity increase, design margins will decrease--making understanding device noise performance and device-specific noise origins increasingly necessary. Approaches to increased photodetector responsivity are also of great importance, since they can significantly improve overall system performance. The design, theory, fabrication and testing of a waveguide-coupled germanium MSM photodetector with an above-unity quantum efficiency of approximately 140% is presented, capable of 1.1 GHz operation. The current amplification comes from the photoconductive multiplication effect. The noise elbow at 5V bias is measured to be approximately 150MHz and the high frequency detector noise approaches the Johnson noise floor. I demonstrate for the first time that Ge on Si based photoconductors are not limited by shot noise, as conventional PIN detectors are, but in fact achieve lower noise figures of merit.

The first article presents an account of guided wave optics on silicon which is a subject of considerable current interest in the broad field of integrated optics, likely to influence the design and fabrication of various optical components. Chapter two provides an overview of the optical implementation of neural networks and discusses their design, models and architecture. The following article deals with applications of the path integral technique to the theory of wave propagation in random media, a technique used with considerable success in the last two decades for solutions of problems encountered in classical statistical wave theory. Methods for obtaining information on the relative location of objects in space are considered in the following chapter and includes an analysis of the potential accuracy and reliability of object location in the presence of additive Gaussian noise and a discussion of optical filters for localization of objects under various circumstances. The fifth article deals with the broad topic of radiation from uniformly moving sources. It considers the Vavilov-Cerenkov radiation, the Doppler effect in media, transition radiation and bremsstralung. These phenomena are of particular importance in the electrodynamics of continuous media, especially in a plasma. In the concluding article nonlinear optical plasmas in atoms and weakly relativistic plasmas are considered. The emphasis is on the specific properties of laser radiation that are important for inducing multiphoton processes and on nonlinear interactions of very intense laser pulses with electrons. Book excerpt: Silicon photonics technology, which has the DNA of silicon electronics technology, promises to provide a compact photonic integration platform with high integration density, mass-producibility, and excellent cost performance. This technology has been used to develop and to integrate various photonic functions on silicon substrate. Moreover, photonics-electronics convergence based on silicon substrate is now being pursued. Thanks to these features, silicon photonics will have the potential to be a superior technology used in the construction of energy-efficient cost-effective apparatuses for various applications, such as communications, information processing, and sensing. Considering the material characteristics of silicon and difficulties in microfabrication technology, however, silicon by itself is not necessarily an ideal material. For example, silicon is not suitable for light emitting devices because it is an indirect transition material. The resolution and dynamic range of silicon-based interference devices, such as wavelength filters, are significantly limited by fabrication errors in microfabrication processes. For further performance improvement, therefore, various assisting materials, such as indium-phosphide, silicon-nitride, germanium-tin, are now being imported into silicon photonics by using various heterogeneous integration technologies, such as low-temperature film deposition and wafer/die bonding. These assisting materials and heterogeneous integration technologies would also expand the application field of silicon photonics technology. Fortunately, silicon photonics technology has superior flexibility and robustness for heterogeneous integration. Moreover, along with photonic functions, silicon photonics technology has an ability of integration of electronic functions. In other words, we are on the verge of obtaining an ultimate technology that can integrate all photonic and electronic functions on a single Si chip. This e-Book aims at covering recent developments of the silicon photonic platform and novel functionalities with heterogeneous material integrations on this platform.
