Book Design Concepts of Low Noise Amplifier for Radio Frequency Receivers

Download or read book Design Concepts of Low Noise Amplifier for Radio Frequency Receivers written by Sumathi Manickam and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of high-performance radio frequency (RF) transceivers or multi-standard/reconfigurable receivers requires an innovative RF front-end design to ensure the best from a good technology. In general, the performance of front-end and/or building blocks can be improved only by an increase in the supply voltage, width of the transistors or an additional stage at the output of a circuit. This leads to increase the design issues like circuit size and the power consumption. Presently, the wireless market and the need to develop efficient portable electronic systems have pushed the industry to the production of circuit designs with low-voltage power supply. The objective of this work is to introduce an innovative single-stage design structure of low noise amplifier (LNA) to achieve higher performance under low operating voltage. TSMC 0.18 micron CMOS technology scale is utilized for realizing LNA designs and the simulation process is carried out with a supply voltage of 1.8¬†V. The LNA performance measures are analyzed by using an Intel Core2 duo CPU [email protected] processor with Agilent,Äôs Advanced Design System (ADS) 2009 version software.

Book Millimeter Wave Low Noise Amplifiers

Download or read book Millimeter Wave Low Noise Amplifiers written by Mladen Božanić and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first standalone book that combines research into low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) with research into millimeter-wave circuits. In compiling this book, the authors have set two research objectives. The first is to bring together the research context behind millimeter-wave circuit operation and the theory of low-noise amplification. The second is to present new research in this multi-disciplinary field by dividing the common LNA configurations and typical specifications into subsystems, which are then optimized separately to suggest improvements in the current state-of-the-art designs. To achieve the second research objective, the state-of-the-art LNA configurations are discussed and the weaknesses of state-of the art configurations are considered, thus identifying research gaps. Such research gaps, among others, point towards optimization – at a systems and microelectronics level. Optimization topics include the influence of short wavelength, layout and crosstalk on LNA performance. Advanced fabrication technologies used to decrease the parasitics of passive and active devices are also explored, together with packaging technologies such as silicon-on-chip and silicon-on-package, which are proposed as alternatives to traditional IC implementation. This research outcome builds through innovation. Innovative ideas for LNA construction are explored, and alternative design methodologies are deployed, including LNA/antenna co-design or utilization of the electronic design automation in the research flow. The book also offers the authors’ proposal for streamlined automated LNA design flow, which focuses on LNA as a collection of highly optimized subsystems.

Book A Multiband Low Noise Amplifier for Software Defined Radio Using Switchable Active Shunt Feedback Input Matching

Download or read book A Multiband Low Noise Amplifier for Software Defined Radio Using Switchable Active Shunt Feedback Input Matching written by Gideon Adom-Bamfi and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radio frequency (RF) receivers are the key front-end blocks in wireless devices such as smartphones, pagers, PDAs etc. An important block of the RF receiver is the Low-noise amplifier. Its function is to amplify with little noise addition, the RF signal received at the atenna. Modern wireless devices for example the smartphone, incorporates multiple functionalities supported by various RF standards - GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi, GSM etc. Thus, the current trend in the wireless technology is to integrate radio receivers for each RF standard into a single system-on-chip (SoC) in order to reduce cost and area of the devices. In view of this, multiband RF receivers have been developed which feature multiband LNAs. This thesis presents the design and implementation of a multiband LNA for Software Defined Radio Applications. In this thesis, basic radio-frequency concepts are discussed which is followed by a discussion of pros and cons of various multistandard low-noise amplifier topologies. This is then followed by the design of the proposed reconfigurable LNA. The LNA is designed and fabricated in IBM 0.18[mu]m CMOS technology. It is made up of dual LC resonant tanks, one to switch between 5.2GHz and 3.5GHz frequency bands and the other, to switch between 2.4GHz and 1.8GHz bands. The input matching of the LNA is achieved using a switchable shunt active feedback network. The LNA achieves S21 of between 10.1dB and 13.43dB. It achieves an input matching (S11) between -13.44 dB and -11.97 dB. The noise figure measured ranges from 2.8 dB to 4.3 dB. The LNA also achieves an IIP3 from -7.12 dBm to -3.45 dBm at 50 MHz offset. The power consumption ranges from 7 mW to 7.2 mW. Book Design Methodologies for Multi mode and Multi standard Low noise Amplifiers

Download or read book Design Methodologies for Multi mode and Multi standard Low noise Amplifiers written by Gabrielle Guitton and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent enthusiasm for the Internet of Objects as well as for satellite communications leads to the need for high-performance radio-frequency (RF) communication systems. In order to meet the constraints of the mass market, these systems must be compact and be as low power as possible. Beside, they are expected to address multiple communication standards and to adjust their performance to the environment, still in order to reduce the size and the power consumption. Currently, many works focus on the development of low-noise amplifiers (LNA), the most critical block of RF receivers. To address this purpose, the goal is to design multi-mode and multi-standard receivers. Hence, LNAs require design flows that can adapt to the different technologies and topologies in order to meet any given set of specifications. This thesis aims at the development of simple and accurate design methodologies for the implementation of low-noise amplifiers. The first proposed methodology is dedicated to the implementation of a LNA in COTS technology for spatial applications. This LNA offers a broadband matching to address several standards. It is designed to be part of an RF receiver for nano-satellites. Thus, the latter is first studied in order to determine the specifications based on the standards of the targeted applications. The second methodology is dedicated to the implementation of LNAs in CMOS technology for any kind of applications. This methodology is first illustrated with basic topologies and then applied to an highly linear inductorless LNA. The design methodology also enables a fair comparison between the topologies and also CMOS technologies, even the most advanced ones such as the 28 nm FDSOI.Finally, reconfigurability is added to the inductorless LNA, to address several standards while retaining the optimum sizing given by the previously introduced methodology. Indeed, the size and polarization of each transistor are digitally controlled in order to adjust the LNA's performance to a given standard. Furthermore, the study of N-path filters combined with the proposed LNA is explored to improve the linearity of the circuit.

Book The Design and Implementation of Low Power CMOS Radio Receivers

Download or read book The Design and Implementation of Low Power CMOS Radio Receivers written by Derek Shaeffer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is hardly a profound observation to note that we remain in the midst of a wireless revolution. In 1998 alone, over 150 million cell phones were sold worldwide, representing an astonishing 50% increase over the previous year. Maintaining such a remarkable growth rate requires constant innovation to decrease cost while increasing performance and functionality. Traditionally, wireless products have depended on a mixture of semicond- tor technologies, spanning GaAs, bipolar and BiCMOS, just to name a few. A question that has been hotly debated is whether CMOS could ever be suitable for RF applications. However, given the acknowledged inferiority of CMOS transistors relative to those in other candidate technologies, it has been argued by many that “CMOS RF” is an oxymoron, an endeavor best left cloistered in the ivory towers of academia. In rebuttal, there are several compelling reasons to consider CMOS for wi- less applications. Aside from the exponential device and density improvements delivered regularly by Moore’s law, only CMOS offers a technology path for integrating RF and digital elements, potentially leading to exceptionally c- pact and low-cost devices. To enable this achievement, several thorny issues need to be resolved. Among these are the problem of poor passive com- nents, broadband noise in MOSFETs, and phase noise in oscillators made with CMOS. Beyond the component level, there is also the important question of whether there are different architectural choices that one would make if CMOS were used, given the different constraints.
