Book Multidisciplinary Design Optimization and Its Application in Deep Manned Submersible Design

Download or read book Multidisciplinary Design Optimization and Its Application in Deep Manned Submersible Design written by Binbin Pan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-28 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates Reliability-based Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (RBMDO) theory and its application in the design of deep manned submersibles (DMSs). Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) is an effective design method for large engineering systems like aircraft, warships, and satellites, which require designers and engineers from various disciplines to cooperate with each other. MDO can be used to handle the conflicts that arise between these disciplines, and focuses on the optimal design of the system as a whole. However, it can also push designs to the brink of failure. In order to keep the system balanced, Reliability-based Design (RBD) must be incorporated into MDO. Consequently, new algorithms and methods have to be developed for RBMDO theory. This book provides an essential overview of MDO, RBD, and RBMDO and subsequently introduces key algorithms and methods by means of case analyses. In closing, it introduces readers to the design of DMSs and applies RBMDO methods to the design of the manned hull and the general concept design. The book is intended for all students and researchers who are interested in system design theory, and for engineers working on large, complex engineering systems.

Book Propeller Based Human Powered Swimming Device

Download or read book Propeller Based Human Powered Swimming Device written by Kristine Alina Bunker and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently the only human powered swimming device widely sold on the market are swim flippers. However, flippers are not efficient for the human body, and there is a potential to increase the speed while swimming with a device. This thesis is the planning, design, construction, and prototyping of a new human powered swimming device which increases human efficiency and speed in water. This device uses a squatting motion to drive counter rotating propellers up and down a threaded shaft creating the propulsion force to move the swimmer forward. The design of this device is primarily geared towards scuba divers and swimmers moving beneath the water surface. Through various tests we were able to prove that the design concept is valid, but alterations are still necessary to reach optimal speed. One such improvement would be enlarging the size of the propeller to increase the force generated with each leg thrust.

Book Propulsion Optimization for ABE an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle AUV

Download or read book Propulsion Optimization for ABE an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle AUV written by Thomas James Woodford and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oceanographic community is moving towards unmanned autonomous vehicles to gather data and monitor scientific sites. The mission duration of these vehicles is dependent primarily on the power consumption of the propulsion system, the control system and the sensor packages. A customized propulsion thruster is designed. This includes a specialized propeller tailored to ABE and a matched motor and transmission. A non-linear lumped parameter model of the thruster is developed and experimentally verified. The model is used to predict thruster performance and compare the design thruster with other variants of propeller and motor/transmission combinations. The results showed that there is a trade-off between rapid dynamic response and power conservation. For the typical ABE trajectory, the designed thruster provides good dynamic response and the lowest power consumption of all the modelled thruster units.

Book Design of Propulsors for Underwater Vehicle by Comprehensive Design Method

Download or read book Design of Propulsors for Underwater Vehicle by Comprehensive Design Method written by Kyungjung Cha and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive method which designs the propeller blades with the maximum efficiency to move a given underwater vehicle at a specified speed is introduced. A previously developed nonlinear optimization algorithm which defines the blade shape by 4×4 B-spline polygon is applied for a target propeller thrust and a given inflow. The propeller performance is evaluated by a vortex-lattice method (VLM) within the optimization scheme. The interaction of the propeller with hull (and duct) is accounted for by coupling the VLM with a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver, in order to determine the hull resistance, the propeller thrust, and the propeller inflow. The optimization method as well as the propeller/hull interaction method continue until the propeller thrust and the hull resistance equal each other. The method is applied to design various open, ducted, and contra-rotating propellers for a given underwater vehicle. Several combinations of propeller size and propeller RPM are studied. Additional pressure constraints, such as the minimum pressure constraint and the pressure difference constraint, are imposed for some cases. The effect of propeller diameter and propeller rotational speed on the resulting propeller performance and on the required power are explored, providing proof of concept for the presented method as well as guidance to the propeller designer

Book A Computational Tool for the Rapid Design and Prototyping of Propellers for Underwater Vehicles

Download or read book A Computational Tool for the Rapid Design and Prototyping of Propellers for Underwater Vehicles written by Kathryn Port D'Epagnier and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) The first study analyzes propeller thruster performance characteristics for an off-the-shelf propeller, while the second study demonstrates the process for propeller optimization-from the initial design to the final file that can be read by a 3D printer. The third study reviews the complete process of the design and production of an AUV propeller. Thus, OpenPVL performs a variety of operations as a propeller lifting line code in streamlining the propeller optimization and prototyping process.
