Book Design and Development of Bendway Weirs for the Dogtooth Bend Reach Mississippi River

Download or read book Design and Development of Bendway Weirs for the Dogtooth Bend Reach Mississippi River written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation is one of a series of model studies used to determine the effectiveness of various dike and bendway weir systems proposed for the improvement of several troublesome reaches on the Mississippi River. This report describes and gives results of test concerned with the development of plans for the improvement of the Dogtooth Bend reach of the middle Mississippi River, located 20 miles above the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. A movable-bed model reproducing approximately 19.4 miles of the Mississippi River (horizontal scale 1:400, vertical scale 1: 100) and using granulated coal as the bed material was employed to develop plans that would improve and stabilize the navigation channel through the reach and eliminate or reduce the need for maintenance dredging. The goals of this study were to improve current flow patterns and widen the navigation channel in Dogtooth and Price's Landing Bends and in the crossings immediately downstream of both bends. Currents concentrating on the outside bank of a number of bends have caused serious problems for barge traffic and major damage to bank stabilization and protection structures. During a high-water event in 1983 the bank line at Dry Bayou (mile 23.3) failed, allowing the river to flow overland for approximately 5 miles.

Book River Mechanics

  • ISBN : 1108683738
  • Pages : 527 pages

Download or read book River Mechanics written by Pierre Y. Julien and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Julien's textbook presents an analysis of rivers from mountain streams to river estuaries. The book is rooted in fundamental principles to promote sound engineering practice. State-of-the-art methods are presented to underline theory and engineering applications. River mechanics blends the dual concepts of water conveyance and sediment transport. Like the first edition, this textbook contains ample details on river equilibrium, river dynamics, bank stabilization, and river engineering. Complementary chapters also cover the physical and mathematical modeling of rivers. As well as being completely updated throughout, three new chapters have been added on watershed dynamics, hillslope stability, and stream restoration. Throughout the text, hundreds of examples, exercises, problems, and case studies assist the reader in learning the essential concepts of river engineering. The textbook is very well illustrated to enhance advanced student learning, while researchers and practitioners will find the book to be an invaluable reference.

Book Bridge Scour and Stream Instability Countermeasures

Download or read book Bridge Scour and Stream Instability Countermeasures written by U. S. Department of Transportation and published by . This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this document is to identify and provide design guidelines for bridge scour and stream instability countermeasures that have been implemented by various State departments of transportation (DOTs) in the United States. Countermeasure experience, selection, and design guidance are consolidated from other FHWA publications in this document to support a comprehensive analysis of scour and stream instability problems and provide a range of solutions to those problems. The results of recently completed National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) projects are incorporated in the design guidance, including: countermeasures to protect bridge piers and abutments from scour; riprap design criteria, specifications, and quality control, and environmentally sensitive channel and bank protection measures. Selected innovative countermeasure concepts and guidance derived from practice outside the United States are introduced. In addition, guidance for the preparation of Plans of Action ...

Book Managing Flood Risk

  • Author : Anna Serra-Llobet
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2018-03-31
  • ISBN : 3319716735

Download or read book Managing Flood Risk written by Anna Serra-Llobet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past half century has seen an evolution in thinking from ‘flood control’ to ‘flood risk management’, recognizing that risk results from both hazard and vulnerability. Rather than rely only on engineering structures to reduce flood magnitude or extent, recent policies emphasize avoiding construction in flood-prone areas (or moving people from floodplains), reducing impacts on exposed populations through early warning systems, and insurance to aid in recovery. Implementing this new approach faces many challenges but also offers opportunities for synergies, as described in this book for a range of large floodplain rivers and smaller urban streams across North America and Europe. This book is unique in presenting the voices of those on the front lines of implementing a new paradigm in flood risk management, each river with a unique set of challenges and opportunities derived from its specific geography as well as differences in governance between the American and European contexts.
