Book Recent Advances in Design and Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning

Download or read book Recent Advances in Design and Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning written by Jos P. van Leeuwen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-06-29 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International conference on Design & Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning is organised bi-annually by the Eindhoven University of Technology. This volume contains a selection of papers from the seventh conference that was held at De Ruwenberg Castle in Sint-Michiels Gestel, The Netherlands, from 2 to 5 July, 2004. Traditionally, the DDSS conferences aim to be a platform for both starting and experienced researchers who focus on the development and application of computer support in the areas of urban planning and architectural design. This results in an interesting mix of well-established research projects and first explorations. It also leads to a very valuable cross-over of theories, methods, and technologies for support systems in the two different areas, architecture and urban planning. This volume contains 22 peer reviewed papers from this year's conference that are organised into five sections: * Applications of Artificial Intelligence, * Visualisation fro Design and Decision Support, * Simulation and Agent Technology, * Design Research and Design Support Systems, * Geographical Information Systems. Together, these papers provide an excellent overview of the latest results in research and development of design and decision support systems in architecture and urban planning.

Book Design and Decision Support Systems in Architecture

Download or read book Design and Decision Support Systems in Architecture written by Harry J.P. Timmermans and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume were originally presented at the conference on Design and Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning that was held in Mierlo, the Netherlands in July 1992. This conference was organized as one of the events celebrating the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at Eindhoven University of Technology. The organizing committee had a strong feeling that many interesting developments in this area were emerging within different institutional frameworks and informal networks that do not interact frequently. For example, scholars working on architectural problems are not particularly familiar with computer applications in urban planning. Likewise, although many computer-aided design systems claim to be based on principles of design methodology, serious discussions on the methodological underpinnings of such systems are relatively scarce. Consequently, we may have little opportunity to learn how scholars in closely related disciplines approach specific design or planning problems.

Book A Human Centered Approach for Designing Decision Support Systems

Download or read book A Human Centered Approach for Designing Decision Support Systems written by Sean C. G. Kern and published by . This book was released on 2000-03-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The choice to include the human in the decision process affects four key areas of system design: problem representation, system analysis and design, solution technique selection, and interface requirements specification. I introduce a design methodology that captures the necessary choices associated with each of these areas. In particular I show how this methodology is applied to the design of an actual decision Support system for satellite operations scheduling. supporting the user's ability to monitor the actions of the system and to guide the decision process of the system are two key considerations in the successful design of a decision support system. Both of these points rely on the correct specification of human-computer interaction points. Traditional, computer-centered system design approaches do not do this well, if at all, and are insufficient for the design of decision support systems. These approaches typically leave the definition of human-computer interaction points till after the component and system level designs are complete. This is too late however since the component and system level design decisions can impose inflexible constraints on the choice of the human-computer interaction points. This often leads to the design of human-computer interaction points that are only "good enough." These approaches result in ill-conceived problem representations and poor user-system interaction points because the system lacks the underlying architecture to support these constructs efficiently. Decision support systems require a new, human-centered design approach rather than the traditional computer-centered approaches.

Book The Strategic Use of an Information System in Supporting Architectural Design Decisions for a Design Firm

Download or read book The Strategic Use of an Information System in Supporting Architectural Design Decisions for a Design Firm written by Lu Liu (M.S.) and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is to illustrate how a computer-based information system for supporting decision making, that is a Decision Support System (DSS), can be utilized as a strategic tool in architectural design for a firm. The products of information technology have been designed around a wide spectrum of needs. Architects can immediately adopt the technology and use it as design tools. These tools are not just a productional convenience, but also bring about strategic advantages to a firm. In this study, through the investigations on the current computer use in professional architectural design, a need is called out for DSS planning. Derived from the field of Management Information Systems, a method of strategic DSS planning is set forth, which is a top-down planning process from office strategy to data base requirements, with the emphasis on the most critical applications to the top management . This method is applied through a three - phase planning process to a hypothetical office which represents a typical design firm. It is found in this study that the construction cost analysis for schematic design phase is the key operation for a DSS. This DSS can forge strong links between architectural design, project management, and office strategy in establishing a firm's competence in the cost and quality control for a building.
