Book Analysis of the Internationalisation Strategies of German Car Companies in China

Download or read book Analysis of the Internationalisation Strategies of German Car Companies in China written by Patrick Schrott and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, , course: Automotive Management, language: English, abstract: China’s economy is growing year by year. The persistent growth has affected the auto-mobile sector in particular. Increasing income and the passenger vehicle as an exclusive status-symbol has risen the private demand. In 2009, the PRC overtook the USA as the biggest automotive market in the world in production as well as in sales. This trend will certainly continue: With economic problems like stagnating real income, rising raw material prices and credit-driven consumerism in the industrial countries the importance of the Chinese market for car companies will even grow. Saturated passenger car markets in the USA and Western Europe and low rates of motorisation in new auto-motive markets like China focus the attention of the market participants on these new, growing markets. But the upward trend has already shown a downside. Increasing de-pendency on the strong politically influenced market and claims about know-how transfer are exemplary threats. As German enterprises in this industrial sector are popular worldwide and the car-industry is the key industry in our country, the internationalisation strategies of German automotive companies in China will be analysed in the following. The trend of the Chinese automobi-le market can be summarised in a quote of Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler: “Wir fahren noch nicht im höchsten Gang, wir können noch mehr”. The quote relates to the expected turnover and profit records of Daimler in 2011, which were mainly based on the success in the PRC: The Swabian vehicle manufacturer sold 198,500 automobiles in China. In spite of these difficulties, the automotive market in the PRC is very attractive, especially for the well-known German firms. However, the companies should know how to manage the problems in China. Therefore, the choice of a suitable strategy of internationalisation is crucial. By definition internationalisation strategy is the orientation of corporate development by growth in different foreign markets. In contrast to an international market entry strategy, an internationalisation strategy is not only about starting business in a foreign market, but also developing a strategy in a market which has already been entered. The focus of this bachelor thesis is put on the passenger vehicle market and lines out why the Chinese market is profitable and attractive for German and international manu-facturers in general. Book An analysis of risks and chances for the German automotive supplier industry within the Chinese market

Download or read book An analysis of risks and chances for the German automotive supplier industry within the Chinese market written by Felix Emmerich and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-06-27 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 2,0, University of Cooperative Education (VWA Stuttgart (BA)), language: English, abstract: “China – big but not easy” (1) titled the Automotive Industries Magazine in its July 2005 issue, reporting about the German premium car manufacturer Audi, who is manufacturing in China since 1999. This simple statement breaks down the risks and opportunities for the German automotive supplier industry in China into two keywords. The first one is “big”: in the last decades, the eyes of the world’s automotive supplier industry have been directed to China, because it is promising to be the world’s biggest market soon. Given the fact that one fifth of mankind lives in China and its standard of living is rapidly improving, it is only a question of time until the promise becomes real. In addition to this enormous sales potential, the advantages of cheap labor and an improving level of technology and education show China’s attractive sourcing potential. The second one is “not easy”: exploiting this potential and taking part in the growth comes with a variety of challenges to the foreign suppliers: a completely different culture, a dynamic and highly competitive market and a political-legal system that favors its home industry over the foreigners – only to name a few. Although this paper is concerned with the German automotive suppliers in particular, it is inevitable to draw a complete picture of the country in general and the situation of the automotive manufacturers, which are in many areas the driving force behind the supplier’s activities. So the first chapters describe the market environment, progressing from the general to the specific and providing the framework necessary for the in-depth analysis of risks and opportunities. These are separated into internal and external aspects. Internal risks and opportunities derive from the weaknesses and strengths of a company itself. The external risks and opportunities in contrast can hardly be influenced by the suppliers as they are effects of the political and economical development. But the suppliers can develop strategies to adapt: using the opportunities and avoiding the risks! So, the aim of this paper is to show why China is such an important but difficult market for the German automotive suppliers and – as a conclusion – to give recommendations and strategies for being Successful in China. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, University of Southern Denmark (University of Southern Denmark), language: English, abstract: This thesis analyzes and evaluates current macro-environmental trends in the German automotive industry and their evolutionary impact on automotive business models and competitiveness of traditional German car manufacturers. To enhance the understanding of industry evolution and strategic change, the German automotive business is explored through the lens of market innovations. Drawing upon the industry evolution model of Henderson and Clark (1990), the impact of automotive market innovations on strategies of German OEMs with regard to inter-firm collaborations are classified and analyzed. For evaluation of motives and strategic fit in cross-industry collaborations, sources and key success factors of inter-firm competitive advantages are elaborated. Synthesizing and refining among others the theories of Barney (2007), Dyer & Singh (1999), and Williamson (1993), new resources as derived from inter-organizational relationships are depicted in terms of competitiveness and their relations to German car manufacturers are discussed. Identifying the red oceans and the blue oceans in the German automotive industry according to the business model theory of Kim and Mauborgne (2005), four scenarios for the strategic realignment of German OEMs in response to industry dynamics are formulated. Within this scope, modifications of business model elements are elaborated according to the strategy canvas of Osterwalder et al. (2005) and revisions of existing automotive business models are proposed. Having studied the business model concept as a possible integrator of traditional strategic perspectives on industry evolution and firm performance, the thesis concludes with the insight that in order to capitalize on the emerging automotive trends, German OEMs need to intensify qualitative partner

This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarly Research Paper from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: 1,0, Munich University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: Volkswagen Group is based in Wolfsburg, Germany, ranks among the world's leading automobile manufacturer and is the largest carmaker in Europe. Therefore the Group posses 11.3 percent share of the world passenger car market and holds 20.9 percent of the European automobile market. The Volkswagen Group with its nine brands (Audi, SEAT, Skoda, Volkswagen, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini and Scania) offers a broad product range from low-consumption small cars to luxury class vehicles. For simplicity reasons the Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft (as parent company of the Volkswagen group) is referred to as Volkswagen or VW where as the whole Volkswagen Group is either referred to as Volkswagen (VW) Group or Group within this paper. Despite the Group's international alignment it is currently only slightly represented in India. As it has entered the Indian passenger car market ten years ago, significantly later than its Japanese and American competitors, its current market share amounts only to two percent. Because potential customers are increasing, the automotive industry is getting more dynamical and international and government's politics are focusing on economic growth, India could become the future key market to the automotive industry. Due to the eminently strong growth of the Indian main street and the proceeding social change, as the younger generation wants to go for a distinguished career, especially the Indian minicar market's (IMM) potential is higher than ever before. As Volkswagen Group is alive to the importance of this market but lacking in appropriate knowledge how to produce cheapest cars in large-scale production, it considers strengthening the cooperation with Suzuki Motor Corporation and Volkswagen by building a Joint Venture (JV). Thus, the alrea

Book An investigation into offshoring and backshoring in the German automotive industry

Download or read book An investigation into offshoring and backshoring in the German automotive industry written by Rüdiger Holz and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-01-24 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, Swansea University, language: English, abstract: Domestic market stagnation, cost pressures, intensified international competition and chances of emerging markets, have forced the German automotive industry to utilize international location advantages and thus production relocations have become the main strategy to survive in a globalized automotive market. These relocation activities are often viewed as being one-way directed and affected jobs are perceived as being permanent losses for the domestic economy. But in reality, relocation activities are becoming increasingly dynamic and since the turn of the century, more and more cases have been discovered, involving businesses that are returning their productions from abroad. This study has involved exhaustive research to investigate the current scope and scale of Offshoring and Backshoring activities within the German automotive industry and its impact to the domestic labour market by means of a questionnaire survey. The results of the more than two hundred survey responses show that Offshoring activities continue to proceed and a strong shift in Offshoring activities at present takes place from the Eastern European to Asian regions, resulting in agglomeration, “band wagon” effects as well as excess capacities especially in the Chinese market. The study further shows that relocation activities in the automotive industry nowadays do not necessarily result in higher earnings and constant cost savings but rather contribute to an increased competitiveness and to the future survival of the company. Beside ongoing factor price equalization within the age of globalization, a trend in Backshoring activities as stipulated by the media could not be observed so far. Above all, this can be drawn back on the high cost of Offshoring activities and low profit margins within the industry. The findings of the study further concluded that Offshoring has indirectly contributed to the safeguarding of productive and especially non productive jobs at the domestic locations. Although anticipated by press and media, Backshoring does not have any impacts on the domestic labour market.

Book BMW Entering the Automobile Market in Brazil

Download or read book BMW Entering the Automobile Market in Brazil written by Marcel Keller and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-02-26 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1, Coventry University (Business School), language: English, abstract: The ongoing globalisation and the interrelated trade of goods and services are an integral part of today’s business. In particular, the automobile industry plays an important role within the global environment, because of their strong linkages within the global economy. The increased international commitment of car manufacturers is driven by, on the one hand issues of limited opportunities in their respective home markets and, on the other hand, superior opportunities in emerging markets such as China or India. Therefore, motives for entering new markets can be either proactive, for example, expand market share, lower costs or the availability of resources or they can be reactive, for example, to remain competitive. For instance, German car manufacturers are faced by a highly competitive home market, not only within the mass market, but in the premium market as well. BMW, for instance, has been proactive by taking the opportunity to enter new markets such as China where it has produced cars since 2003. Furthermore, BMW assemblies its cars with a reassembly production process in India, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. However, these are just a few emerging economies where the company seeks its opportunities. Emerging economies such as Brazil offer auspicious potential for foreign investors as well. Brazil is the eighth largest economy by Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the fifth by population and the fourth largest car market in the world. While other companies just consider investments in emerging markets, BMW already benefits by exporting its cars to Brazil. Nevertheless, to take full advantage of the market the company contemplates entering Brazil ́s car market by foreign direct investment. Consequently, BMW has to investigate the Brazilian market very thoughtfully. The aim of this report is to critically analyse and evaluate the automobile industry as well as the business environment in Brazil with reference to BMW. Furthermore, the report identifies recommendations to develop a long-term market entry strategy in order to act successfully in the market.

Book Entering the Electric Car Market in Germany

Download or read book Entering the Electric Car Market in Germany written by David Schröder and published by Grin Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: B, University of Canterbury, course: Strategic Management, language: English, abstract: Executive Summary Tesla wants to bring three electric car models on the German market; the Roadster in early 2009 and two future models in the following years. This strategic analysis is aimed at supporting Tesla in its management decisions to successfully launch these three models and gives advice on future strategy. It provides specific information on the German market and is divided into the analyses of critical success factors, emerging issues and trends and the support of innovation. Critical Success Factors It is most important to manage the cars' entrance into the market from the factory to the customer. This includes the choice of a strategic location for a future manufacturing facility that enables Tesla to produce higher quantities of the two future models, the distribution channel via importers and dealers, the marketing including advertisement and public relationships, and customer service. Pricing will be a success factor for the two future models. Emerging Issues and Trends Emerging issues can be considered on a global scale, most of them aren't specific to Germany. The major issue is the influence of the oil industry on the whole automotive sector. Transport experts predict that electric cars will be the successors of petrol cars; this is a threat for the existing industries and their established infrastructure. Supported are electric cars by the "green" trend and changes which are made in environmental legislations by the German government and some city councils. Further support comes from the power industry which desires to launch the concept "vehicle to grid". This concept reduces energy generation and distribution issues and only works with an increasing number of electric cars. Support of Innovation Tesla can be innovative by developi

Book The Fourth Industrial Revolution

Download or read book The Fourth Industrial Revolution written by Klaus Schwab and published by Currency. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World-renowned economist Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, explains that we have an opportunity to shape the fourth industrial revolution, which will fundamentally alter how we live and work. Schwab argues that this revolution is different in scale, scope and complexity from any that have come before. Characterized by a range of new technologies that are fusing the physical, digital and biological worlds, the developments are affecting all disciplines, economies, industries and governments, and even challenging ideas about what it means to be human. Artificial intelligence is already all around us, from supercomputers, drones and virtual assistants to 3D printing, DNA sequencing, smart thermostats, wearable sensors and microchips smaller than a grain of sand. But this is just the beginning: nanomaterials 200 times stronger than steel and a million times thinner than a strand of hair and the first transplant of a 3D printed liver are already in development. Imagine “smart factories” in which global systems of manufacturing are coordinated virtually, or implantable mobile phones made of biosynthetic materials. The fourth industrial revolution, says Schwab, is more significant, and its ramifications more profound, than in any prior period of human history. He outlines the key technologies driving this revolution and discusses the major impacts expected on government, business, civil society and individuals. Schwab also offers bold ideas on how to harness these changes and shape a better future—one in which technology empowers people rather than replaces them; progress serves society rather than disrupts it; and in which innovators respect moral and ethical boundaries rather than cross them. We all have the opportunity to contribute to developing new frameworks that advance progress.

Book Full speed towards a sustainable future The story of the electric car in Germany

Download or read book Full speed towards a sustainable future The story of the electric car in Germany written by Fabian Guse and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 1,7, VU University Amsterdam , language: English, abstract: “I believe in horses, automobiles are a passing phenomenon”1 (Kaiser Wilhelm II, 1905) More than 100 years ago when the first motorized vehicles appeared on the streets, Kaiser Wilhelm II was not able to see the potential of this invention and how it would change the world he lived in. Today we are facing the next revolution of transportation technology, elec-tric mobility (e-mobility). In consideration of continuous scarcity of fossil resources and pro-gressive environmental issues caused by increasing amounts of CO2 emissions in our atmos-phere, a rethinking of universally accepted habits is needed. Public and private transportation account for 19% of the overall CO2 emissions in Germany and is therefore one of the largest contributors to climate change and local air pollution (Umweltbundesamt, 2011). This circumstance also shows the great political relevance of this topic as well as the need to make the whole industry more sustainable. A sustainable innovation like the electric car can help to decrease the negative externalities of economic growth and reduce the ecological footprint of a modern-day life. Against this background, the German government proclaims that Germany should be the leading market for e-mobility; aiming to have a diffusion rate of one million electric cars until 2020 (Delhaes, 2008). In order to achieve this, they are dependent on the innovation activities of the German automotive industry. But consumers as well as car manu-factures seem to be skeptical about this novelty, which results in a comparable small diffusion rate of only 7114 electric cars in the end of 2012 (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, 2013). For instance, in Denmark the diffusion rate of new electronic cars is 30 times higher than in Germany and even The Netherlands have a rate that is 8 times higher (Masson, 2013). The mentioned diffu-sion rate shows the total number of newly registered electric cars in comparison to the total number of traditional fuel cars within a year. This is curious on a first view as Germany has the largest automotive industry in the world, consisting of firms like BMW, Daimler, Opel and Volkswagen. One would hence expect great interest and a proactive stance from both the firms as well as the government in supporting this innovation. (...) Table of Content 1. Introduction 1.1. Download or read book Outsourcing Vs Insourcing in the Automotive Industry The Role and Concepts of Suppliers written by Christian Nitschke and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject Engineering - Industrial Engineering and Management, grade: 2,0, Stellenbosch Universitiy, course: Operations Management, 78 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The research report takes an in-depth look at the automotive industry and their major participants in the upstream value chain. The different parties involved are the automotive manufacturers (OEMs) and their suppliers. The overall goal of the following report is to identify suitable business models for small to medium sized (SME) automotive suppliers. As the automotive value chain currently undergoes an evolutionary change towards a diminishing vertical integration of the OEMs, it becomes a challenging issue to reconfigure the responsibilities of the suppliers. Thereby OEMs and their suppliers have to cope with a shift from a functional to a process orientated value chain. During this reorganization of the OEM-supplier interface, enterprises realign their strategic intent towards their core competencies as well. Besides the shifting value chain, both suppliers and OEMs have to cope with a consolidation in their industries. This consolidation is impacted by stagnating traditional markets, an ongoing globalization of the value chain, and an increasing productivity pressure in the automotive industry. Looking at the automotive supplier, it becomes obvious that the suppliers are on the one hand challenged by productivity pressures and on the other hand have the opportunity to take over more business of the automotive value chain. The growth potential requires changes in the area of supply chain management and new types of collaboration in the supply network. This prospective development is mainly influenced by a trend towards the outsourcing of entire processes by the OEMs and the increasing need for future innovations in the automotive industry. After discussing the above mentioned issues, the report analyses the role of suppliers with res

Book A Case Study of Daimler AG s Entry in the Hungarian Automotive Industry

Download or read book A Case Study of Daimler AG s Entry in the Hungarian Automotive Industry written by Stefan Bömer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2022-01-28 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: 1,7, The University of York, language: English, abstract: This case study focuses on the entrance of Daimler AG in form of their brand Mercedes-Benz Cars, in the following Mercedes-Benz, originally founded in Germany, into the Hungarian automotive market. Mercedes-Benz is active in the field of passenger cars and this specific section will be addressed. Even though previous interaction with the Hungarian market was conducted in the past, the focus will lie on the successful engagement of Mercedes-Benz since 2008, when the decision to build a car assembly plant in Kecskemét was taken. For its foreign engagement in Hungary, Mercedes-Benz used an offshore outsourcing strategy shown by strong engagement with local suppliers which produce many parts for the car manufacturer, in combination with equity investment in the final assembly plant. This makes Mercedes-Benz a fragmented MNE as it uses outsourcing, while at the same time it is an original design manufacturer. It's designs and produces are crucial parts of its cars itself. The core business strategy is described for Mercedes-Benz with respect to four aspects: strengthening core businesses, growing globally, leading in technology and pushing digitalization. Regarding the strengthened core business and growing globally, this leads to further increase sales of high-tech cars, especially in China and Asia. With respect to leading in technology and pushing digitalization, Mercedes-Benz aims at expanding its technological leadership in the field of security, autonomous driving, connectivity and drive systems.
