Book Description of a Normal Force In Situ Turbulence Algorithm for Airplanes

Download or read book Description of a Normal Force In Situ Turbulence Algorithm for Airplanes written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A normal-force in-situ turbulence algorithm for potential use on commercial airliners is described. The algorithm can produce information that can be used to predict hazardous accelerations of airplanes or to aid meteorologists in forecasting weather patterns. The algorithm uses normal acceleration and other measures of the airplane state to approximate the vertical gust velocity. That is, the fundamental, yet simple, relationship between normal acceleration and the change in normal force coefficient is exploited to produce an estimate of the vertical gust velocity. This simple approach is robust and produces a time history of the vertical gust velocity that would be intuitively useful to pilots. With proper processing, the time history can be transformed into the eddy dissipation rate that would be useful to meteorologists. Flight data for a simplified research implementation of the algorithm are presented for a severe turbulence encounter of the NASA ARIES Boeing 757 research airplane. The results indicate that the algorithm has potential for producing accurate in-situ turbulence measurements. However, more extensive tests and analysis are needed with an operational implementation of the algorithm to make comparisons with other algorithms or methods. Stewart, Eric C. Book A Method for Estimating Some Longitudinal and Lateral Rigid body Responses of Airplanes to Continuous Atmospheric Turbulence

Download or read book A Method for Estimating Some Longitudinal and Lateral Rigid body Responses of Airplanes to Continuous Atmospheric Turbulence written by Ellwood L. Peele and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is presented for estimating some lateral and longitudinal rigid-body responses of airplanes to random atmospheric turbulence. Estimates of center-of-gravity load factors and motion responses can be made simply and easily through the use of parametric charts. Sample calculations are included to illustrate the method.

Book Effort of Spanwise Variation of Turbulence on the Normal Acceleration of Airplanes with Small Span Relative to Turbulence Scale

Download or read book Effort of Spanwise Variation of Turbulence on the Normal Acceleration of Airplanes with Small Span Relative to Turbulence Scale written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rigid airplane with an unswept wing is analyzed. The results show that the power spectrum, relative to that for a one-dimensional turbulence field, is significantly attenuated at the higher frequencies even for airplanes with arbitrarily small ratios of span to scale of turbulence. This attenuation is described by a simple weighting function of frequency that depends only on aspect ratio. The weighting function, together with the attenuation due to the unsteady flow of gust penetration, allows the determination of the average rate of zero crossings for airplanes having very small spans without recourse to an integral truncation which is often required in calculations based on a one-dimensional turbulence field.

Book Aviation Turbulence

Download or read book Aviation Turbulence written by Robert Sharman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who has experienced turbulence in flight knows that it is usually not pleasant, and may wonder why this is so difficult to avoid. The book includes papers by various aviation turbulence researchers and provides background into the nature and causes of atmospheric turbulence that affect aircraft motion, and contains surveys of the latest techniques for remote and in situ sensing and forecasting of the turbulence phenomenon. It provides updates on the state-of-the-art research since earlier studies in the 1960s on clear-air turbulence, explains recent new understanding into turbulence generation by thunderstorms, and summarizes future challenges in turbulence prediction and avoidance.
