Il est destiné à illustrer un cours classique sur les équations différentielles dans le cadre d'une licence de mathématiques, mais il peut également servir d'initiation aux notions de base indispensables aux applications. Une première partie est consacrée à des pré- requis de calcul différentiel et de topologie différentielle : définition des termes et notions de base utilisées par la suite, concernant aussi bien le calcul différentiel dans un espace euclidien que la topologie différentielle. La deuxième partie est la matière d'un cours classique sur les équations différentielles. Les champs linéaires et les propriétés générales des trajectoires sont donc évidemment exposés. Mais, dans la tradition initiée par Henri Poincaré, on insiste aussi sur les aspects qualitatifs du comportement des solutions, avec l'introduction de la notion de flot d'un champ de vecteurs, qui joue un rôle fondamental car elle sert de base à l'étude essentielle des propriétés de récurrence et de stabilité des orbites. La notion d'application de Poincaré d'une orbite périodique est développée et quelques résultats importants de la théorie qualitative sont démontrés. Les lecteurs trouveront un développement de cet ouvrage dans le tome II, publié dans la même collection (Vers la théorie des systèmes dynamiques). Robert Roussarie, ancien élève de l'École Polytechnique, a soutenu une thèse en mathématiques sur la théorie des feuilletages. Il a été chercheur au CNRS puis professeur à l'Université de Bourgogne. Il est un spécialiste des équations différentielles (bifurcations des champs de vecteurs du plan, 16e problème de Hilbert, systèmes lents-rapides en dimension 2). Jean Roux a soutenu une thèse en mathématiques à l'Université de Paris. Il a été ingénieur-chercheur aux Études et Recherches de l'EDF et maître de conférences en analyse numérique aux Ponts et Chaussées. Il est actuellement enseignant en mathématiques appliquées au département Géosciences de l'ENS.

Des rappels théoriques fondamentaux sont proposés ainsi que deux preuves complètes de convergence de schémas numériques dans le cas du frottement déterministe ou stochastique.

The early research of the authors just mentioned lay in challenging problems of astronomy, but the line of thought thus produced found the most impressive applications in the new fields. The body of research now accumulated is overwhelming, and many books and reports have appeared on one or another of the multiple aspects of the new line of research which some authors call "qualitative theory of differential equations". The purpose of the present volume is to present many of the view points and questions in a readable short report for which completeness is not claimed. The bibliographical notes in each section are intended to be a guide to more detailed expositions and to the original papers. Some traditional topics such as the Sturm comparison theory have been omitted. Also excluded were all those papers, dealing with special differential equations motivated by and intended for the applications.

The study of a holomorphic dynamical system consists in describing the asymptotic behavior of the system, associating it with some invariant objects (easy to compute) which describe the dynamics and classify the possible holomorphic dynamical systems supported by a given manifold. The behavior of a holomorphic dynamical system is pretty much related to the geometry of the ambient manifold (for instance, - perbolic manifolds do no admit chaotic behavior, while projective manifolds have a variety of different chaotic pictures).
