Book excerpt: At first sight it may appear strange that a volume of Progress in Pediatric Surgery should be devoted to the history of our specialty. One assumes that progress is concerned primarily with recent developments whilst history deals with matters of the past. However, in the past there has also been considerable progress in the development of our understand ing of paediatric surgical problems, otherwise we would not have pro gressed to our present achievements. The editors, therefore, do not apologize for compiling this volume but, on the contrary, feel that the publication of this volume is most timely. Modern paediatric surgery has now been practised for three genera tions. The handful of pioneers who were the founders of our specialty worked mainly before the last world war. A few dozen of the inter mediary generation started work immediately after the war, while the new generation who are now dominating our specialty must be counted in thousands. Two factors have radically altered paediatric surgery as practised by the intermediary and the present generation of surgeons.

Professor Bartelheimer, as the representative of the Medical Faculty and on behalf of the President of the University of Hamburg, welcomed the Parti cipants in the symposium to our city. The history of these meetings began in Oxford in 1963, with the First European Bone and Tooth Symposium, organized by H. J. J. Blackwood, B. E. C. Nordin, and Dame Janet Vaughan. The idea was to found in Europe an institution simi lar to the American Gordon Research Conferences of Bone and Tooth. After the U. K. , the host countries were Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Italy, Israel and Austria. The second symposium in Liege already bore the present name.

John Riddle's approach, however, has been to explore the history of drugs with the hypothesis that ancient and medieval medicines were effective - a methodology that he expounds in the final essay (hitherto unpublished). Indeed, he shows, both from detailed case-studies and from the comparison of the listings given by classical and medieval authorities with those in modern pharmacopoeias, that our ancestors had discovered and made effective use of many of the drugs used in medicine today, from antiseptics and analgesics to oral contraceptives, even chemotherapy for cancer. There is the suggestion, therefore, that more careful examination and identification of the drugs used in the past may reveal chemicals that can be exploited anew. Central to these studies is the investigation of how a drug was used and how knowledge about it was transmitted - and perhaps also distorted in the process - from the Classical world through the Middle Ages.
