Tous les décideurs du champ emploi-formation se trouvent confrontés à ces interrogations, qui s'inscrivent également dans le débat scientifique. Pour les éclairer, cet ouvrage propose une analyse des liens réels entre formations et emplois et tente de comprendre pourquoi ils sont ainsi. Il s'appuie essentiellement sur les résultats de l'enquête Génération 98 du Céreq (Centre d'études et de recherches sur les qualifications), qui permettent de repérer les caractéristiques des emplois occupés au cours des premières années de vie active. La diversité des éclairages et des matériaux réunis par les auteurs de cet ouvrage - membres du Céreq et d'autres équipes de recherche - permet de mieux comprendre les relations entre formations et emplois et, ce faisant, peut contribuer à modifier les représentations, à donner de nouveaux repères à tous les acteurs concernés par cette question d'une constante actualité. La première partie montre comment les acteurs - système éducatif, responsables d'entreprises, décideurs nationaux et régionaux - se positionnent par rapport à cette question. La deuxième montre qu'une " bonne correspondance " entre formation initiale et emplois occupés, tant en termes de niveaux que de spécialités, n'est pas aujourd'hui la règle en France, même pour les formations professionnelles. La troisième analyse comment la volonté d'ajuster les formations aux emplois se heurte aux stratégies des différents acteurs. Enfin, la dernière partie met l'accent sur les phénomènes de " déclassement ".
