What's worse, Derek really misses his birth parents-who supposedly died. Turns out, they're not so dead. Formalda's psychic Aunt, Claire Voyent, tells Derek that his birth parents are alive, but kidnapped-and in great danger. Against Jack and Formalda's wishes, she helps Derek and Prudence run off to an airstrip to find an eccentric pilot named Up-Chuck Charlie. Charlie agrees to fly the kids to a swampy bayou where Derek's parents are being kept as zombies, drugged by a voodoo witch doctor. After surviving a plane crash in the swamp, the kids rush to save Derek's parents from the evil witch doctor. Too late, they discover his parents were whisked away to a pirate ghost ship by the evil villain D. K. Rotzalot. Derek is desperate to rescue his parents, but first he has to find his inner hero-and somehow match Prudence's courage and spunky attitude. It's either that, or live a wretched life of regret and woulda-coulda-shoulda.

The books selected for this collection were chosen following the criteria of reluctant reader books created by the Quick Picks committee sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association. While these guidelines were designed for young adult books, they also work well for middle-grade books. The criteria include: clear writing (no convoluted long sentences with sophisticated vocabulary), high interest “hook” in the first few pages, well-defined characters, interesting plot, and familiar themes.
