Book The Political Economy of Trade Conflicts

Download or read book The Political Economy of Trade Conflicts written by Franz Waldenberger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Ricardo's law of comparative advantage and his finding that free trade increases the wealth of all participating nations is one of the very few economic laws which is accepted by almost all economists. But economic reason and economic policy do not always follow the same path. This especially applies to trade policies. A substantial and growing part of trade between Japan, Europe and the US does not follow the principles of free trade, but is more accurately managed trade. The management of international trade, international trade negotiations, and the political dynamics of trade conflicts create a complex reality which follows its own laws without regard to economic policy prescriptions. This political-economic reality was the subject of the conference 'The Political Economy of Trade Conflicts' organizedjoindy by the German Institute for Japanese Studies and the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation together with the Institute of Modern Political Science and Economics of Waseda University in December 1993. We present the results of the conference in this reader. Three issues were of special importance: the US-Japanese conflict over the reduction of trade imbalances via quantitative import targets; the liberalization of trade in agricultural products, especially the opening of the Japanese rice market; and the trade tensions between the European Union, the US and Japan in high technology industries. The conference took place immediately before the conclusion of the Uruguay Round, and yet its subject continues to be of high political importance. In early 1994, the US-Japan conflict around quantitative import targets became more tense.

Book A History of Japanese Trade and Industry Policy

Download or read book A History of Japanese Trade and Industry Policy written by Mikio Sumiya and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-12-07 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the destruction of its social and economic infrastructure during the Second World War, Japan's subsequent remarkable recovery and growth propelled it rapidly into the ranks of the developed nations. In order to trace this post-war transformation formally, the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) convened a committee of independent academics to compile a seventeen-volume History of Japanese Trade and Industry Policy, of which this volume acts as a summary. Translated for the first time into English, it examines the planning, drafting, and implementation of various policies adopted by MITI against their economic and industrial background in the period from 1945 to 1979. It provides an objective overview and analysis of the development of international trade and industry policy that will be of interest to economists, political scientists, policy-makers, and public administration lawyers alike.

Book Dynamics of Japan s Trade and Industrial Policy in the Post Rapid Growth Era 1980 2000

Download or read book Dynamics of Japan s Trade and Industrial Policy in the Post Rapid Growth Era 1980 2000 written by RIETI and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides an in-depth examination of Japan's policy responses to the economic challenges of the 1980s and '90s. While MITI's earlier role in promoting rapid growth has been addressed in other studies, this volume, based on official records and exhaustive interviews, is the first to examine the aftermath of rapid growth and the evolution of MITI's interpretation of the economy's changing needs. Covering such topics as the oil shocks, trade conflict with the United States, and the rise and collapse of the so-called bubble economy, it presents a detailed analysis and evaluation of how these challenges were interpreted by government officials, the kinds of policies that were enacted, the extent to which policy aims were realized, and lessons for the longer term. This book is recommended especially to officials of countries concerned about the challenges that follow on high economic growth and to readers interested in Japan’s contemporary economic history.

Book Japan Restless Competitor

Download or read book Japan Restless Competitor written by Dr Malcolm Trevor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important new and controversial study about the nature and focus of the Japanese economic agenda, the author argues forcefully that the official mind-set of leading bureaucrats, top politicians and big business, makes it virtually impossible for the western industrialized world to do business on an equal footing. Put simply, it is a question of western free-market economics facing Japanese economic nationalism, which is, by its very nature, both an expansive and a protectionist ideology. International observers continue to ask is Japan changing?' or more forcefully, is Japan capable of change?'. Notions of reform' and restructuring' are today part of the Japanese lexicon, but appear to hold little substance. Trevor argues that any western notion of Japan changing fundamentally (i.e. adopting western, or Anglo-Saxon, philosophies) is facile completely unrealistic. This book is for everyone who wonders what motivates Japan's politico-economic system, and whether it is changing.

Book Strategic Positioning in the Oil Industry

Download or read book Strategic Positioning in the Oil Industry written by Paul Stevens and published by Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research. This book was released on 1998-10-08 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents papers drawn from ECSSR's Second Annual Energy Conference entitled, "Strategic Positioning in the Oil Industry: Trends and Options," held in Abu Dhabi, October 26-27, 1996. The work highlights and investigates the changes which are occurring in the demand structure for oil, changes that will have far-reaching consequences for oil producers, refiners and distributors who wish to perform in an ever-competitive market. Written principally by leading practitioners, the essays represent the most current thinking on how and in which direction the oil industry, particularly in the Gulf region, is developing. Readers will find trenchant analyses of vertical integration as a strategy for oil security, refining and petroleum product specifications in Asia, privatization initiatives in the Gulf's energy sectors, downstream integration of national oil companies, and options and opportunities for Gulf oil companies in the Asian market. Strategic Positioning in the Oil Industry: Trends and Options is not only a valuable collection of information and argument but it also offers a rare insight into the beliefs and perceptions of those participating in today's international oil industry.

Book Energy Transition of the Electricity Sectors in the European Union and Japan

Download or read book Energy Transition of the Electricity Sectors in the European Union and Japan written by Maciej M. Sokołowski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the energy policies in the European Union and Japan in terms of electricity markets and climate action, including energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, and the reduction of emissions. The book evaluates and compares the regulatory frameworks for achieving energy transitions by answering a number of questions focused on the essence and range of the regulatory models used by leading global economies which herald carbon neutrality by 2050. The book provides a useful framework that systematises Japanese and European energy policies and legislation including electricity-related policies, plans, and programmes. Discussing these issues in relation to the European and Japanese 2050 energy transition the author delves into the four pillars of the transition: market reform, reduction of emissions, promotion of renewables, and enhancing energy efficiency. Each chapter demonstrates the timing of the actions undertaken both in Europe and Japan; analyses the character of the conducted actions, evaluates the stakeholders of the realised agenda; and presents the technologies involved in the energy transition.

Book excerpt: Oil pulses through our daily lives. It is the plastic we touch, the food we eat, and the way we move. Oil politics in the twentieth century was about the management of abundance, state power, and market growth. The legacy of this age of plenty includes declining conventional oil reserves, volatile prices, climate change, and enduring poverty in many oil-rich countries. The politics of oil are now at a turning point, and its future will not be like its past. In this in-depth primer to one of the world’s most significant industries, authors Gavin Bridge and Philippe Le Billon take a fresh look at the contemporary political economy of oil. Going beyond simple assertions of peak oil and an oil curse, they point to an industry reordered by global shifts in demand toward Asia, growing reliance on unconventional reserves, international commitments to reduce carbon emissions, a growing campaign for fossil fuel divestment, and violent political struggles in many producer states. As a new geopolitics of oil emerges, the need for effective global oil governance becomes imperative. Highlighting the growing influence of civil society and attentive to the efforts of firms and states to craft new institutions, this fully updated second edition identifies the challenges and opportunities to curtail price volatility, curb demand and the growth of dirty oil, decarbonize energy systems, and improve governance in oil-producing countries.

Book Where is Oil in National Reforms

Download or read book Where is Oil in National Reforms written by Parag Diwan and published by Excel Books India. This book was released on 2008 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . This book has been designed in terms of the core analytical framework of two taxonomy tables: a) Taxonomy of Economic Reforms, and b) Taxonomy of Oil Sector Reforms. These two tables present structures, business segment and significant economic activities of the 'economy' and the 'oil sector', respectively. The impact of oil sector reforms on other segments of the economy has been analyzed in terms of macro-economic parameters. How closely reforms in oil sector and those in national economy have moved and interacted with each other have been analyzed and conclusions have moved and interacted with each other have been analyzed and conclusions have been drawn from the different perspectives of policy-making and their impact. This book comes out with significant findings, which inter alia will be useful in designing national level policy and corporate strategy. The method adopted in this study is what applicable for a sectoral strategy (i.e., for oil sector), within the emerging market condition (from monopolistic market gravitating towards competitive market), under an overall policy regime (transformation of a public sector domination to private participation, under democratic framework). The strategy for oil sector has been examined and formulated at national level (macro) and at enterprise (micro) level. Further, industry level issues like demand, supply and pricing have been dealt, along with social objectives which have been identified in terms of macro economic indicators like inflation, balance of payment deficit, energy insecurity, import dependence and fiscal deficit. These problems have been analysed and solutions have been attempted through multipronged approaches.
