This new volume adds Germany to the list, but the coverage extends to Austria, Switzerland, and Czechoslovakia and to any other country (including the United States) where there was interest in records whose source or language was German. The principal intention of this volume is to produce a complete listing of material within this field, and not merely a selection (e.g., operatic records only). Thus, it lists not only the important recordings from Wagner operas, but those from other composers, together with all the songs, popular and serious, recorded by the most important record company of the age. Also included are all the instrumental records of the time--by pianists, violinists, cellists, and harmonica players--as well as military music played by celebrated regimental bands. Included with this is a remarkable amount of material where the executant was also the composer, an area of unusual interest. In previous years, most records from this time period were unavailable, and there was virtually no chance of ever hearing them, particularly where copies were so rare as to exist in only one collection. The introduction of the long-playing record changed the situation and the invention of the compact disc has improved availability to an extent undreamed of even a few years ago. This volume is intended to provide collectors and archivists with a comprehensive and reliable guide to the contents of their collections.

Like William James or Gilles Deleuze, Souriau methodically defends the thesis of an existential pluralism. There are indeed different manners of existing and even different degrees or intensities of existence: from pure phenomena to objectivized things, by way of the virtual and the “super-existent,” to which works of art and the intellect, and even morality, bear witness. Existence is polyphonic, and, as a result, the world is considerably enriched and enlarged. Beyond all that exists in the ordinary sense of the term, it is necessary to allow for all sorts of virtual and ephemeral states, transitional realms, and barely begun realities, still in the making, all of which constitute so many “inter-worlds.”

Continuing the theme of Volume 8 of the same series, which examined the early medieval search for origins in relation to building a sense of identity and social memory, this volume focuses on the modern appropriation of the early medieval past. The early Middle Ages played an important role in the creation of a sense of identity for modern European nations. In the 18th and 19th centuries, a process was begun of delineating Europe according to peoples and nations. This conception of people and nations as quasi-natural forms of social organisation, often claimed as being historical but ultimately considered to be a trans-historical phenomenon, still survives in modern Europe and unfortunately seems to be increasing in importance in the political disputes in certain areas. Most of the contributions in this volume deal with the appropriation of the early Middle Ages from the perspective of national histories. A few contributions examine strategies of using the early medieval past in other contexts. It is thereby possible to identify patterns of how, in the varied social contexts of modern Europe, images of the Other have been transmitted or the sense of belonging has been legitimised.
