Download or read book Communities and Local Government s Departmental Annual Report 2008 written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Communities and Local Government Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its report of last year on the Communities and Local Government's Departmental Annual Report 2007 (HC 170, session 2007-08, ISBN 9780215037978) the Committee commented on the particular nature of the Department's work: on its unusual reliance for the achievement of the goals Government has set it on a plethora of other Departments, agencies, non-departmental bodies, local authorities and other stakeholders; on the long, devolved delivery chains by which those goals therefore have to be delivered; and on the skills of influence, brokering and negotiation which are required to achieve them. In this Report the Committee assesses the progress made since last. The most recent Cabinet Office Capability Review concludes that there has been a positive "direction of travel" for CLG in that period, but the Committee concludes that there is still some way to go before CLG can be said to be performing at the highest achievable level of effectiveness. The Department's overall performance against its Public Service Agreement targets is likewise moving in the right direction but still short of full effectiveness. Achievement of efficiency targets is applauded. Finally, the report considers examples of particular policies which highlight some of the Department's strengths and weaknesses, and follow up some issues in earlier inquiries. These issues include: eco-towns; the Decent Homes programme; Home Information Packs; Fire Service response times; Firebuy; the FiReControl programme. The report also considers the Department's response to the serious flooding of summer 2007, and to the reviews which followed; and the mismanagement of European Regional Development Fund monies.

Download or read book Interior Landscapes Second Edition written by Gerald Vizenor and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2009-08-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic autobiography of the famous Indigenous writer and critic Gerald Vizenor The classic memoir by one of the most celebrated Indigenous writers of the modern era, Interior Landscapes offers an unforgettable glimpse of the life and world of Gerald Vizenor. Vizenor writes about his experiences as a tribal mixedblood in the new world of simulations; the themes in his autobiographical stories are lost memories and a "remembrance past the barriers." The chapters open with natural harmonies and the premier union of the Anishinaabe families of the crane and the first white fur traders. The author bares his fosterage, his ambitions, his contentions with institutions and imposed histories; his encounters as a community advocate, journalist for the Minneapolis Tribune, university teacher, critic, and novelist. Vizenor celebrates chance, or "trickster signatures" and communal metaphors in these pages: he was hired to teach social sciences at Lake Forest College, his first experience as a teacher, because the head of the department admired his haiku poems; he toured the armorial emblems at Maxim's de Beijingwhen it opened on October 1, 1983, in the People's Republic of China; he wrote about the suicide of Dane White and the murderer Thomas White Hawk; he rescued his dreams from the skinwalkers at the Clyde Kluckhohn house in Santa Fe, New Mexico; and, as an editorial writer, he followed the American Indian Movement from Custer to Rapid City, from Calico Hall on the Pine Ridge Reservation to Wounded Knee, South Dakota. Teasing, revealing, and irresistible, Interior Landscapes charts the fascinating life of a brilliant Anishinaabe writer. The new edition contains a wealth of new photographs and information on the journey of Gerald Vizenor. Gerald Vizenor, a member of the White Earth Anishinaabeg, is a professor of American Studies at the University of New Mexico. His many books include Fugitive Poses, Manifest Manners, Hiroshima Bugi, and Survivance. He is the editor of the series Native Traces (SUNY) and Native Storiers (Nebraska). "The Chippewa writer Gerald Vizenor is at once a brilliant and evasive trickster figure. . . He is perhaps the supreme ironist among American Indian writers of the twentieth century." -- N. Scott Momaday "Instead of trying to walk the thin, often invisible line between art and politics, history and future, Vizenor dances on both sides, knowing all too well that in our time politics can become myth and vice versa."--San Francisco Review of Books

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chooses the topic which is due to the editors' experience in modeling projects in healthcare systems. Also, the transfer of experiences is the reason why mathematical modeling and decision making in the field of health are not given much attention. To this end, the new aspect of this book is the lack of reference needed to carry out projects in the field of health for researchers whose main expertise is not modeling. Students of health, mathematics, management, and industrial engineering fields are in the direct readership with this book. Different projects in the field of healthcare systems can use the topics presented in different chapters mentioned in this book.

Download or read book Arrested written by Dan Conaway, Esquire and published by Hillcrest Publishing Group. This book was released on 2014 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn how to protect yourself from the American criminal justice system. Arrested: Bottling America's Criminal Justice System is not a book for just anyone. After all, if you're a career criminal with no remorse, it probably won't help you-but it could. If, on the other hand, you are a good, decent, law-abiding citizen who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time-or know someone who was-or you just want to know more about the American criminal justice system, this book is definitely for you. Practicing criminal defense attorney Dan Conaway has written Arrested to help us all understand our rights and responsibilities as upstanding citizens of the country we live in. "The Beast"-as he refers to our criminal justice system-has very little in common with the way it is depicted on TV crime dramas. Clearing away the fiction, Conaway addresses the following real-world topics: What should you say if a police officer stops you to ask "just a few quick questions"? Why does it take so long for most cases to go to trial? How can you help a family member who has been accused of a crime? Although not intended as a substitute for professional legal counsel, Arrested can be used as a guide as you work your way through the maze of one of the most complicated systems on the planet. With the help of fact-based scenarios, Conaway shows us all what could happen to any of us if we're not careful. Along with explanations of how we have become a "zero-toleranee" society-as well as the good and bad inherent in that label-and practical, real-life examples to learn from, Arrested will give you both the background and the foresight to know how to handle yourself in almost any situation.
