Book Denys Wortman s New York

Download or read book Denys Wortman s New York written by Denys Wortman and published by Drawn and Quarterly. This book was released on 2010-11-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rescued archive of vintage New York City from a forgotten ash can artist After cartoonist, educator, and editor James Sturm discovered the vintage book Mopey Dick and the Duke, he set off to find out more about the author, the deceased and unknown cartoonist Denys Wortman. Sturm immediately took note of the masterful drawings—casual, confident, and brimming with personality—and wondered how this cartoonist escaped his radar. After some online sleuthing, Sturm connected with Wortman's son, who relayed that an archive of more than five thousand illustrations was literally sitting in his shed in dire need of rescuing. For more than thirty-five years, the illustrations had been fighting such elements as hungry rodents, rusty paper clips, and even a blizzard. Wortman's son also had drawers full of his father's correspondence, including letters and holiday cards from William Steig and Walt Disney. Original artwork by artists and personal friends—including Peggy Bacon, Milt Gross, Isabel Bishop, and Reginald Marsh—were also saved. The fact that Wortman's luminary peers held him in the highest regard, coupled with his artistic prowess, makes his absence from both fine art and comics history puzzling. So Sturm and Brandon Elston set out to create a beautiful tribute to the forgotten master. Denys Wortman's New York is not only a tribute to Wortman; it is a tribute to New York, the city that sparked Wortman's voracious creative output. From coal cellars to rooftops, from opera houses to boardinghouses, Wortman recorded the sailors, dishwashers, con artists, entertainers, pushcart peddlers, construction workers, musicians, hoboes, society matrons, young mothers, secretaries, and students who collectively made the city what it was and is today.

This book was released on 2019-01-25 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Moxons and the Brownes - an account of Charles St Denys Moxon and his family" is a vivid account of two families - the Moxons and the Brownes - who combined an entrepreneurial spirit with artistic and scientific prowess. Four marriages took place between members of these two families between 1787 and 1840, and their offspring, in the following hundred years produced a geologist, several bankers, explorers, soldiers, churchmen, botanists, philanthropists and the artist who illustrated Charles Dickens's early works. The author of this book, Bob Moxon Browne, QC, is a descendant of these two families. He is a leading lawyer in Great Britain but in his spare time Bob has been fascinated by family history and has researched his 19th century forebears in depth. This book is enhanced with almost seventy illustrations by, and of, members of these families.

Book Denys Arcand s Le Declin de l empire americain and Les Invasions barbares

Download or read book Denys Arcand s Le Declin de l empire americain and Les Invasions barbares written by Andrê Loiselle and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The release of Denys Arcand's Le Déclin de l'empire américain (The Decline of the American Empire) in 1986 marked a major turning point in Quebec cinema. It was the first Québécois film that enjoyed huge critical and commercial success at home and abroad. Arcand's tragicomedy about eight intellectuals gathered around a dinner table relating sexy anecdotes became the top-grossing film of all time in Quebec and was the first Canadian feature to be nominated for an Oscar in the foreign-language category. Seventeen years later, Arcand won an Academy Award for the sequel, Les Invasions barbares (The Barbarian Invasions), where the amusing insouciance of the thirty-somethings talking dirty in Le Déclin is replaced by a sense of moral responsibility and serene resignation. In this engrossing study, André Loiselle presents the first in-depth analysis of both films within the context of Quebec culture. Through close readings and concise cultural analysis of two of the most important films in the history of Quebec cinema, Loiselle demonstrates the ways in which Arcand's work represents a snapshot of the evolution of the French Canadian film industry since 1980. The companion films trace the decline of Quebec's national dream and the Québécois' attempts to cling to their identity against the forces of barbaric globalization. The second title in the new Canadian Cinema series, Denys Arcand's "Le Déclin de l'empire américain" and "Les Invasions barbares" is essential reading for cinephiles, film critics, and anyone with an interest in cultural studies and Canadian and Quebec history.

Book The Films of Denys Arcand

Download or read book The Films of Denys Arcand written by Jim Leach and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-17 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denys Arcand is best known outside Canada for three films that were nominated for Academy Awards for Best Foreign-Language Film: The Decline of the American Empire (1986), Jesus of Montreal (1989), and The Barbarian Invasions (2003), the last of which won the Award. Yet Arcand has been making films since the early 1960s. When he started making films, Quebec was rapidly transforming from a relatively homogeneous community, united by its Catholic faith and French language and culture, into a more fragmented modern society. The Films of Denys Arcand sheds light on how Arcand addressed the impact of these changes from the 1960s, when the long-drawn-out debate on Quebec's possible separation from the rest of Canada began, to the present, in which the traditional cultural heritage has been further fragmented by the increasing presence of diasporic communities. His career and films offer an ideal case study for exploring the contradictions and tensions that have shaped Quebec cinema and culture in a period of increasing globalization and technological change.
