Book excerpt: The goal of this investigation was to analyze the morphological and chemical characteristics of the resin-adhesive bonding in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) affected dentin. The NCCL affected dentin was analyzed before and after acid etching (15 and 30 seconds) using micro-Raman spectroscopy. A total-etching dentin adhesive was applied to natural NCCLs and artificially prepared wedge shaped cavities. The dentin-adhesive interface was studied using micro-Raman spectroscopy and Goldner's trichrome staining. Substrate alteration including the presence of a hypermineralized layer in the NCCL affected dentin was seen but the severity of these features varied in different specimens. Exposure to acid etchant for 30 seconds produced a demineralized layer of acceptable depth to facilitate resin-adhesive infiltration in NCCLs. A wider layer of exposed collagen between adhesive and mineralized dentin was seen in non-sclerotic dentin but there was no difference in adhesive penetration in NCCL affected sclerotic dentin and non-sclerotic dentin.
