Book Oral Infections and Systemic Diseases

Download or read book Oral Infections and Systemic Diseases written by Lise Lund Håheim and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-05 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oral infections mainly affect oral health, but can also affect people’s general health in several ways. This book gives an overview of the scientific evidence for linkages between oral infections and other systemic diseases. Much research has been carried out to find the most plausible reasons for associations and possible causal mechanisms in this regard. The last 20-30 years have opened up the field of the infection hypothesis in cardiovascular disease that was first introduced in the nineteenth century. The book also provides a short overview of oral infections and symptoms due to systemic diseases.

Book Oral Microbiology and Immunology

Download or read book Oral Microbiology and Immunology written by Richard J. Lamont and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of oral microbiology has seen fundamental conceptual changes in recent years. Microbial communities are now seen as the fundamental etiological agent in oral diseases through their interface with host inflammatory responses. Study of structured microbial communities has increased our understanding of the roles of each member in the pathogenesis of oral diseases, principles that apply to both periodontitis and dental caries. Against this backdrop, the third edition of Oral Microbiology and Immunology has been substantially expanded and rewritten by an international team of authors and editors. Featured in the current edition are: links between oral infections and systemic disease revised and updated overview of the role of the immune system in oral infections thorough discussions of biofilm development and control more extensive illustrations and Key Points for student understanding Graduate students, researchers, and clinicians as well as students will find this new edition valuable in study and practice. Book Oral Infections and General Health

Download or read book Oral Infections and General Health written by Anne Marie Lynge Pedersen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a wide-ranging update on the associations between oral infections and general health. Detailed consideration is given to the underlying mechanisms or pathways linking oral infections to general health, including metastatic spread of infection from the oral cavity as a result of transient bacteremia, metastatic injury from the effects of circulating oral microbial toxins, and metastatic inflammation caused by immunological dysfunction induced by oral microorganisms. The book also reviews the complex structure and development of oral biofilms in health and disease, and the molecular tools that are currently available for their analysis. The advantages and limitations of such techniques, as well as their impact on the future of diagnostics, prevention and patient management, are discussed.

Book excerpt: Dental plaque represents a classic example of both a biofilm and a microbial community, in that it displays emergent properties, i.e. plaque displays properties that are more than the sum of its constituent members. The view of plaque and its constituent microorganisms have shifted from specific plaque hypothesis to a non-specific plaque hypothesis and back again to a theory of specific periodontal pathogens in plaque. Recently dental researchers have begun to view plaque as a biofilm. Oral biofilms are very heterogeneous in structure. Dense mushroom-like structures originate from the enamel surface, interspersed with bacteria-free channels used as diffusion pathways. The channels are probably filled with an extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) matrix produced by the bacteria. The bacteria engage in both cooperative and competitive interactions. In order to break down complicated host macromolecules and extract nutrition, bacteria combine their metabolic efforts. A variety of diffusible chemicals are used in cell-cell signaling, which helps the microbial community's members coordinate their gene expression. Bacteria in biofilms use a system known as "quorum-sensing" to optimize their virulence factors and survival. Dental biofilm pathogenicity in the oral cavity is magnified by two biofilm characteristics: increased antibiotic resistance and the inability of the community to be phagocytized by host inflammatory cells. The key characteristics of biofilm that could be targets for pathogen management include its behavior as an adhesive mass with viscoelastic properties, its activity as a coordinated multi species community in which cells communicate via small molecules, and its inflammatory disease potential. To understand the mechanism of change from health to disease and their interaction with the host's reactions, more in-depth information of the metabolic activities controlling and governing biological processes at the species-species level is now required. An improved understanding of biofilm will lead to new strategies for management of oral diseases. In the near future, it is expected that the correlation between biofilm maturation and activation of specific genes of the inner microorganisms will be clarified at the molecular level.
