Bangladesh has experienced remarkable economic growth rates over the last decade. The country has recently been upgraded from a low-income country (LIC) to a lower-middle-income country (LMIC) as per the World Bank’s classification system. By 2024, the country also aspires to graduate from the United Nation’s list of least developed countries (LDC). The 7th five-year plan sets an ambitious target of 8 percent growth in GDP by 2020. There are also steep development targets to be achieved under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. All these will require an enormous leap forward from the current level of economic growth rate and sustaining it in the future. The situation also calls for considerable structural change in the economy, facilitating large-scale economic diversification. Rapid expansion of labor-intensive and high-productivity sectors, both in the farm and nonfarm sectors, is thus crucial for Bangladesh. Further, this should take place in conjunction with interventions to enhance productivity, jobs and incomes in traditional and informal activities where there are large pools of surplus labor. Given its relevance for Bangladesh and applicability to many other developing countries, the book offers a unique and pioneering resource for researchers, industry watchers as well as policy makers.

Book excerpt: Since the publication of the World Development Report 2008, two related strands of research have emerged-one on the validity of smallholder-led development strategy and the other on agricultural intensification under population pressure. The former casts doubt about the role of agriculture in economic development in smallholders dominated countries and the later provides evidence that are contrary to earlier findings on induced innovation theory. Using a unique panel dataset, we examine whether these arguments are valid for Bangladesh--a densely populated country that has experienced significant growth in recent decades. The results suggest that (1) agriculture as a source of income declined significantly over the past two decades; (2) the operated farm size stopped declining in the late 1980s; and (3) that population density relates positively with a host of agricultural intensifications indicators with no evidence of threshold.

Book excerpt: Population projection for many developing countries like Bangladesh could be quite a challenging task. The objective of this paper is to compare between different types of population models and to find out the most suitable population models for long term population projection. We represented some population models such as Malthusian model, Logistic model, Gompertz model and Schaefer model to investigate their solution and plot their graphs. We predicted the human population of Bangladesh during 1980 to 2080 by applying both Malthusian and Logistic models using the actual population data of 1980 to 2013 from World Bank. The study reveals that short time population prediction is more accurate in Malthusian model. But in long term prediction, population growth is more unrealistic. But Logistic model is more realistic in long term prediction as compared to Malthusian model. Our work touched a little part of it.The realistic prediction of human population in future is very essential. We believe that extensive and continuous involvement in population dynamics research may result in to answer many questions and also may bring tremendous achievements for the next generation.
