Book Status Enhancement and Fertility

Download or read book Status Enhancement and Fertility written by John D. Kasarda and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Status Enhancement and Fertility: Reproductive Responses to Social Mobility and Educational Opportunity provides a theoretical framework in which research findings on the socioeconomic determinants of fertility may be integrated. Starting with an introductory chapter on the substantive scope of the book, separate chapters provide a detailed review, appraisal, and synthesis of the complex research literature on social mobility and fertility; examine various statistical methodologies and suggest some fruitful avenues future research might pursue; and discuss the role of education in enhancing the status of women and the main intervening variables that link education to reproductive behavior. Subsequent chapters examines female labor force participation, the value of children, infant and child mortality, age at marriage and first birth, and family planning knowledge and practice. The final chapter discusses policy issues derived from models and assessments presented in the preceding chapters. This book may be used as an upper division or graduate level text in population courses.

Book Women in Global Migration 1945 2000

Download or read book Women in Global Migration 1945 2000 written by Eleanore O. Hofstetter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-03-30 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With large numbers of people migrating to other countries after World War II, a substantial amount of scholarship has focused on the status, problems, and successes of women immigrants since 1945. The first comprehensive compilation of the international literature on these women, this bibliography--with over 5,100 entries--reveals the breadth of scholarship on feminist immigration issues. Focusing particularly on sources from North America and Western Europe, where most immigrant women settled, the book includes feminist analyses, bibliographies, demographic studies, economic comparisons, educational research, health and medical reports, legal discussions, biographies and autobiographies, psychological case studies, religious reports, sociological investigations, and publications dealing with general aspects of female immigration. The book covers such legal issues as citizenship, international conventions on contract workers, the traffic in women, and services and government benefits to immigrants. Medical entries include such topics as female genital mutilation, comparative obstetric results, and equity of treatment. Education entries cover such subjects as adult education and the second-language programs necessary for assimilation. With entries in several languages, the bibliography includes books, journal articles, essays and chapters in books, dissertations, ERIC reports, national and international government documents, and statistical sources. With immigration a major political and social issue in most countries today, the book provides an important research tool.

Book European Populations Unity in Diversity

Download or read book European Populations Unity in Diversity written by Dirk J. van de Kaa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European Populations: Unity in Diversity was the general theme of the 1999 European Population Conference, which convened in The Hague (The Netherlands) from 30 August to 3 September on behalf of the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS), The International Union for the Scientific Study of Population, (IUSSP), The Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI), Statistics Netherlands (SN), and The Netherlands Demographic Society (NVD). On the threshold of the third millennium, Europe is facing major and challenging demographic issues that, to a large extent, will shape its future. These challenges formed the basis for selecting special underlying themes for the plenary sessions at the conference. Four outstanding population experts were invited to present their views. Written versions of their presentations form the contents of this book. Dirk van de Kaa (The Netherlands) describes Europe and its population. Henri Leridon (France) addresses the question `How do Europeans plan their families?'. Giuseppe Gesano (Italy) considers the relationship between demographic trends and the labour market, and Marek Okólski (Poland) writes about Europe's recent international migration history.

Book How Generations and Gender Shape Demographic Change

Download or read book How Generations and Gender Shape Demographic Change written by United Nations. Economic Commission for Europe and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2000, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has coordinated the Generations and Gender Programme, which combines data collection with analysis of demographic trends and the roles of different factors that influence them, that of public policy in particular. This volume contains the keynote papers and a summary of contributions to the Conference on How Generations and Gender Shape Demographic Change, held in Geneva in May 2008, as well as the conceptual background note and the Conference report. It aims to disseminate the Conference proceedings to a wider audience, thereby inspiring broader debate. Recent European data suggest that many more people of reproductive age would like to form families and have children than actually do so, and many parents would like to have more children than they have. What role should public policy play regarding these issues? Should reconciling work and family life be the main avenue of policy? Concurrent with lower birth rates, European populations are ageing, which requires adaptation across all spheres of society. What are the best policy responses to these demographic trends, and how can research better support finding them?
