Book Kazakhstan s Assassinated Democracy

Download or read book Kazakhstan s Assassinated Democracy written by Yerzhan Dosmukhamedov and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2013-02 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kazakhstan's Assassinated Democracy describes how the highest levels of government in Kazakhstan are attempting to suppress the country's genuine democratization, particularly through the case of a political party, Atameken. It is based on extensive interviews with Dr. Yerzhan K. Dosmukhamedov, Chairman of the Atameken Party. These interviews and articles -- most of which were originally published in Kazakh or Russian -- have created quite a public stir in Kazakhstan. Dr. Dosmukhamedov analyses problems in building a civic society in the country, key political events, major issues of domestic and foreign policy, and the objective and subjective influences affecting the deep historical process currently underway in the country -- nothing less than the transformation of relationships between the state and the person. Kazakhstan's Assassinated Democracy is directed to a broad range of readers, and is intended for anyone interested in the future of Kazakhstan, the development of political parties, and the forces holding back democracy in that country. a(c)

Book An Atmosphere of Quiet Repression

Download or read book An Atmosphere of Quiet Repression written by Andrea Berg and published by Human Rights Watch. This book was released on 2008 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Kazakhstan is not a country with frequent or dramatic government crackdowns on freedoms and human rights, when it comes to exercising fundamental rights such as worship, press freedom, and assembly, Kazakhstan's people live in an atmosphere that is far more circumscribed and fearful than one would expect of a country that will soon take on the leadership of an organization grounded in human rights principles. This report documents human rights violations in these three areas. It analyzes overly restrictive measures, and draft laws that fail to correct them. It describes the often subtle but effective methods the government uses to prevent people from fully exercising these rights. Kazakhstan should implement, soon, consistently, and meaningfully the human rights reforms it has promised the OSCE and which are required of it as an OSCE participating state. In so doing, Kazakhstan would provide an important positive example to other countries of Central Asia.

Book China the West and Democratization

Download or read book China the West and Democratization written by Luba von Hauff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon insights from international socialization theory and social psychology, this book examines China’s efforts to multipolarize – and hence potentially de-liberalize – the international system from the local perspective of a non-democratic (yet democratizing) nation and then applies these insights to Beijing’s current global agency in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative. Specifically, the book scrutinizes Beijing’s normative engagement in Kazakhstan, a nation that evolved from an enthusiastic supporter of the West’s normative domination of international affairs into an overt critic – after having institutionalized relations with Beijing through the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Tracing and juxtaposing the respective patterns of Kazakhstan’s political identity development before the SCO entered the region and after, this book not only yields unexpected conclusions about the quality of post-Soviet democratization outcomes, but also about Beijing’s local and global influence potentiality for the time to come – and its limits. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of China’s normative power, democratization studies, post-Soviet studies, and International Relations.

Book Engaging Central Asia

Book excerpt: "In July 2007, the European Union initiated a fundamentally new approach to the countries of Central Asia. The launch of the EU Strategy for Central Asia signals a qualitative shift in the Union's relations with a region of the world that is of growing importance as a supplier of energy, is geographically situated in a politically sensitive area - between China, Russia, Iran, Afghanistan and the south Caucasus - and contains some of the most authoritarian political regimes in the world. In this volume, leading specialists from Europe, the United States and Central Asia explore the key challenges facing the European Union as it seeks to balance its policies between enhancing the Union's energy, business and security interests in the region while strengthening social justice, democratisation efforts and the protection of human rights. With chapters devoted to the Union's bilateral relations with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan and to the vital issues of security and democratisation, 'Engaging Central Asia' provides the first comprehensive analysis of the EU's strategic initiative in a part of the world that is fast emerging as one of the key regions of the 21st century."--BOOK JACKET.
