Book Democracy and the Arts of Schooling

Download or read book Democracy and the Arts of Schooling written by Donald Arnstine and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arnstine shows how schools have been distracted from education by reformers urging higher standards - the code word for higher test scores. But education is revealed in the dispositions a person has: sensitivity and resourcefulness, amiability and responsibility, taste, wit, and a disciplined intelligence. This book examines the conditions needed to foster dispositions like these, for they are not acquired by having the young spend more time studying standard academic subjects in preparation for competitive tests. Without recourse to esoteric jargon, Democracy and the Arts of Schooling shows why test scores are less significant than the quality of the experiences students have in school. When that quality is high - when it has the richness and the absorbing character we associate with the aesthetic - then learning takes place.

Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book Democracy in California

Download or read book Democracy in California written by Brian P. Janiskee and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2004 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two most popular question that people ask: 1) what is my purpose and 2) why was I born ? In Purpose, Why were you called you can find the answer. This book will also help you figure out what is you assignment and how to allow God to prepare you so that you will be able to successfully carry out your assignment and glorify God. I used part of my life to assist you in your journey. My story is not meant to cause pity, but to give praise to God. Purpose, Why were you called will help you to understand why you were born or called into a life fill with so much pain resulting from so many hurts and abuse. You will understand that there are two spirits in the world-- God and the Devil and they control the people in our lives. Two groups of people are called to be vessels of honor and vessels of dishonor. The vessels of honor belong to God, and vessels of dishonor belong to the Devil. Each of these people was placed on earth with an assignment. Both will glorify God.
