Download or read book Western Astrolabes written by Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum and published by Adler Planetarium, Astronomy. This book was released on 1998 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum in Chicago is home to one of the world's great collections of astrolabes. Roderick and Marjorie Webster, Adler Curators Emeriti, present the Western astrolabes from the Adler's collection. The earliest of these instruments dates from the 13th century, others are from the workshops of the greatest craftsmen of the Renaissance. All are described here and illustrated lavishly with photographs showing the front, the back and additional details such as the maker's signature. Introductory essays by the Websters and Sara Schechner Genuth explain the use of the astrolabe and its role in cultural and social history, while the appendices and bibliography provide information essential to the specialist.

Download or read book Stars Mind Fate written by J. D. North and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1989-07-01 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published over a period of 20 years the essays collected together in this volume all relate to the lasting human preoccupation with cosmological matters and modern responses to them. The eclecticism of the typical medieval scholar might now seem astonishing, regrettable, amusing, or derisory, according to one's view of how rigid intellectual barriers should be. In Stars, Fate & Mind North argues that we will seriously misunderstand ancient and medieval thought if we are not prepared to share a willingness to look across such frontiers as those dividing astrology from ecclesiastical history, biblical chronology from astronomy, and angelic hierarchies from the planetary spheres, theology from the theory of the continuum, celestial laws from terrestrial, or the work of the clockmaker from the work of God himself, namely the universe. Surveying the work of such controversial scholars as Alexander Thom and Immanuel Velikovsky this varied volume brings together current scholarship on cosmology, and as the title suggest considers the confluence of matters of the stars, fate and the mind. The collection is accompanied by further commentary from the author and new illustrations.

Book The Ciphers of the Monks

Download or read book The Ciphers of the Monks written by David A. King and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2001 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study of an ingenious number-notation from the Middle Ages that was devised by monks and mainly used in monasteries. A simple notation for representing any number up to 99 by a single cipher, somehow related to an ancient Greek shorthand, first appeared in early-13th-century England, brought from Athens by an English monk. A second, more useful version, due to Cistercian monks, is first attested in the late 13th century in what is today the border country between Belgium and France: with this any number up to 9999 can be represented by a single cipher. The ciphers were used in scriptoria - for the foliation of manuscripts, for writing year-numbers, preparing indexes and concordances, numbering sermons and the like, and outside the scriptoria - for marking the scales on an astronomical instrument, writing year-numbers in astronomical tables, and for incising volumes on wine-barrels. Related notations were used in medieval and Renaissance shorthands and coded scripts. This richly-illustrated book surveys the medieval manuscripts and Renaissance books in which the ciphers occur, and takes a close look at an intriguing astrolabe from 14th-century Picardy marked with ciphers. With Indices. "Mit Kings luzider Beschreibung und Bewertung der einzelnen Funde und ihrer Beziehungen wird zugleich die Forschungsgeschichte - die bis dato durch Widerspruechlichkeit und Diskontinuitt geprgt ist - umfassend aufgearbeitet." Book The Crime of Claudius Ptolemy

Download or read book The Crime of Claudius Ptolemy written by Robert R. Newton and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Newton's view, Ptolemy was "the most successful fraud in the history of science". Newton shows that Ptolemy predominantly obtained the astronomical results described in his work The Almagest by computation, and not by the direct observations that Ptolemy described.

Book The History of Ptolemy s Star Catalogue

Download or read book The History of Ptolemy s Star Catalogue written by Gerd Graßhoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ptolemy's Almagest shares with Euclid's Elements the glory of being the scientific text longest in use. From its conception in the second century up to the late Renaissance, this work determined astronomy as a science. During this time the Almagest was not only a work on astronomy; the subject was defined as what is described in the Almagest. The cautious emancipation of the late middle ages and the revolutionary creation of the new science in the 16th century are not conceivable without reference to the Almagest. This text lifted European astronomy to the high standard of knowledge on which the new science flourished. Before, the Ptolemaic models of the orbits of the sun, the moon, and the planets had been refined by Arabic astronomers. They provided the structural elements with which Copernicus and Kepler ushered in the era of modern astronomy. The Almagest survived the destruction of its epicyclic representation of the planetary orbits in the conceptual traces left behind in the theories of its successors. The clear separation of the sidereal from the tropical year, the celestial coordinate systems, the concepts of time, the forms of the constellations, and brightness classifications of celestial objects are, among many other things, still part of the astronomical canon even today.

Book Models and Precision

  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Models and Precision written by John Phillips Britton and published by Scholarly Title. This book was released on 1992 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defends Ptolemy, the second-century astronomer, from the bum rap he's gotten over the past several centuries: that he fiddled with his record of observations to make his calculations come out right. Based on the solar and lunar observations in his Almagest, concludes that his observations were as precise as anyone else's at the time, and were consistent with naked-eye observations. Also argues that he must have had more observations to draw on than he reported, for the parameters he derived are more accurate than can be accounted for by just his own. Apparently begins a series, but no series information is provided. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delineates the two very different traditions of astronomy in medieval Islam: legal scholars watched the crescent moon to keep the calendar, and used shadows to keep the hours and direction of prayer, while astronomers constructed elaborate theories and mathematical tables to approach ever more precision in times and directions. The articles are reproduced from their original publication in various journals, 1982-91.

Book World maps for Finding the Direction and Distance to Mecca

Download or read book World maps for Finding the Direction and Distance to Mecca written by David King and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two remarkable Iranian world-maps were discovered in 1989 and 1995. Both are made of brass and date from 17th-century Iran. Mecca is at the centre and a highly sophisticated longitude and latitude grid enables the user to determine the direction and distance to Mecca for anywhere in the world between Andalusia and China. Prior to the discovery of these maps it was thought that such cartographic grids were conceived in Europe ca. 1910. This richly-illustrated book presents an overview of the ways in which Muslims over the centuries have determined the sacred direction towards Mecca (qibla) and then describes the two world-maps in detail. The author shows that the geographical data derives from a 15th-century Central Asian source and that the mathematics underlying the grid was developed in 9th-century Baghdad.
